Could've been a factory defect (I know some early Dreamcast games at least were fucked from the factory and died on their own, iirc this is the reason for the HOT NEW label you see on some early games), or some sort of moisture got in the case at some point.

I'm backing stuff up and sharing it since the early 2000s. Many of PCECD, SAT and PS1 images I dumped from my collection are still floating around on numerous emulation sites, even today. Chances are good you downloaded and played a few of them.

This day I'm saving everything on various affordable NAS systems, like the ones from QNAP. I also bough a Quantum LTO-7 early this year to do long-time backups to tape.

Based. While the spergs argue about emulators vs physical hardware you do something more useful and make sure we have something to actually play on them. Even if there's disc rot we can still burn games and play them. When the lasers go bad we can replace them with optical drive emulators. But more important is that every game is available regardless of what we play it on.

>I've had my Sonic Adventure game since 1999. No disc rot whatsoever.
I am a CD collector so I have read many things about disc rot, because being a collector I look for the earliest pressing out there. I have some of the earliest CDs made dating back to the early 80s from West Germany & Japan. Obviously, many of these discs are close to 40 years old now and NOT ONE OF THEM HAS SUFFERED FROM DISC ROT. Ive never even seen pictures of any of those early CD suffering from disc rot. Disc rot happens when a CD isn't manufactured properly using inferior materials. This started to happen in the early 90s when lots of places were manufacturing CDs. One such place was in England. If you look up Mastered By Nimbus you should find some info on the subject. But the main point being that plant made CDs with inferior materials that caused bronzing and other problems but not actual disc rot. If a disc is manufactured properly then it doesn't rot. I have seen humidity cause disc rot but only because it was not stored in a jewel case instead it was stored in a binder. The binder causes a chemical reaction with the disc that causes it to rot. How you store a disc matters. I have 1,000s of CDs, most of them from the late 80s and early 90s, and Ive never had one rot.

yea, which work by heating a chemical dye on the recording layer so it changes colour, altering it's reflectivity, making it function the same as a physical pit/land
it's called burning because you're heating a dye to change it's colour, it's also irreversable in the case of cd-r's, just like burning a material (not sure if you're actually burning it, but there are similarities nonetheless)

PS what Sony did to Sega did really piss me off at the time. Whining about it on the internet 20 years later won't bring them back to manufacturing consoles though. Sony is a soulless corporation and the vast majority of good games on their consoles were made by third party publishers. They had a few good first party titles but they rarely managed to turn them into long running franchises, unlike Nintendo and Sega. Their rise directly coincides with the downfall of the major Japanese publishers. They're happy to let their consoles be a vehicle for unimaginative western publishers that are more interested in making their games look more visually impressive and modeled more after movies. This pattern dates all the way back to the PS1 and Bernie fucking Stolar's hate boner for 2D games. They've consistently been a cancer and a force for evil in this industry. Doesn't stop me from owning their obsolete products but I see them for what they are. Fuck Sony.

PS2 had exclusively shovelware, cross-gen and PSP ports released after the PS3 arrived. Not to mention it only kept getting games for so long because it basically had a second life in hueland.
Dreamcast got its last official release in 2007. And besides, cross-gen games are normal when a new console generation arrives. All those games that came out on both PS1/64 and Dreamcast are no different from how Wario's Woods came out on both NES and SNES, or how GTA5, Mortal Kombat X, P5, etc. came out on both PS3 and PS4.
Also PS2 didn't get a lot of those cross-gen titles because the backwards compatibility would make that redundant. Also PS2 and Dreamcast had several shared multiplats while both were on the market, like MvC2 and DoA2.
I could go on and on but they were both literally part of the same era so either both are zoomer shit or, and here's the truth, neither of them are.
And one more thing. The Dreamcast being retro because it didn't last as long is faulty logic, because by that same logic the 3DO belongs to a different era than the PS1.
