I'm not the author of the pack, nor the author of any similar past general. I'm just reposting because it's a great pack, and the last thread died with lots of interest of people playing and commenting and recommending DOS era games. Let's see how it goes.

The first Lands of Lore and Ravenloft games will be doable, their sequels and Stonekeep are maybe's. I have some ways of making CD-ROM based games run off of the HDD without complaint in DOS, but not every CD-ROM game is willing to work with me. The lack of free HDD space left is also a big problem. Even after removing a few of the larger games that were already in that one anon's DOSBox pack, I'm still sitting on about 250MBs free.

Note that the pack is mainly focusing on later, "heavier" DOS games released between 92' and 97' (there are some exceptions to the rule). Then in the last thread i received alot of requests and i pretty much added all of them. Sadly i can't (and maybe wouldn't choose to) add more games to the pack due to IRL changes. Also wanted to keep it relatively small with most of the blockbusters of that time period alone. As of right now there are 85+ games in the pack. Luckily, there's based PCem anon >>6542898 to fulfill the needs of those older, smaller games.
While my pack will be perfect to play the late era DOS games with many QOL updates and tweaks applied (see the readme), perhaps his pack can fill up the gap with the older classics.
Note that if you're aquainted with editing batch files, you can also add a few games to my pack yourself, should you desire to do so.

Yeah, i guess the added fixes is what makes it stand out more from other DOS compilations that simply take the base games and throw them in a zip (without any optimization).

It's pretty amazing really, that there are still people in 2020 eager to enhance 25+ year old DOS games, they deserve alot of respect. I simply put the pack together and streamlined it, but contributions done by for example CHEATER (who made the Powerslave and Dark Forces modifications) cannot be overstated.

BE ANTHER RETROCOMPUTERANON!
I'm loving all this 80s, 90s pc love, replaying a bunch of stuff from my childhood, and because of these threads i was encouraged to take a look on the VSTi and Munt, holy shit the sound those things can make, its a breath of new life on my old games.
Currently i'm using Munt for MT-32/CM-32L, Sound Canvas VA for regular Sound Canvas and Edirol Hyper Canvas (i thing that's the first VSTi with Sound Canvas but has even more instruments) and Yamaha S-YXG50 for some Yamaha goodness (Descent uses REALLY well).

Please report issues with the menus or games. Keep in mind, many old DOS games really required you to read the manual just to figure out controls, I won't help with "how do I play X game" questions. I do want to know if games aren't saving, are crashing, or if you can't access them due to a fuckup in the menu. 264ish games in this one, no more config needed for Windows users.

And I just found a fix for Lands of Lore to get it to function properly. All it needed was an update to version 1.23, and now it works just fine. With that, the HDD is down to roughly 27MBs left, and I want to leave that free for save games and whatnot. As such, version 1.0 of the pack is pretty much done. They're all sounds (.wav files packed into a .exe) that trigger at the right time. They are the sounds that you hear while navigating the menu. (Intro.exe is the song playing at intro screen, button.exe the sound when choosing a game, back.exe when going back). Used a utility called Plany for them. DosBox can play mp3/ogg too but only through using CD audio (RedBook). For any sound running through the cmd screen it must be .wav (unless you have a 3rd party player).

Alright, here it is.

anonfiles com/r0Tcl5C3oc/DOSBox_VR_Split.ver_7z

As I said, it's the same DOS pack from the OP, except grouped games and BATs are divided to launch games separately. I made this to be able to include this collection on RetroArch and frontend setups more easily. For people launching directly from the desktop, the original pack's launcher will be a lot more useful than this.

I included more tips on how to use this in a text file.

Pack creator here, found some time today to add some more titles that i felt should be in the pack also: Hi-Octane, SlipStream 5000, Terminal Velocity and WipeOut were all added. WipeOut comes with the official OST. You can find the new games in the 'Hover' subsection (top-right, formerly this was the Descent section, however i just put all those Hover games in there and renamed the submenu).

Nah, 1.0 means it's done for adding new games until the next major version. Any bugfixes needed will be 1.01, 1.02, etc. I was holding off on 1.0 until I could get Lands of Lore working. I don't plan on going to 1.1 and adding more games until I've figured out which games need to run off of C: and which I can just shove anywhere. Eventually 2.0 will be two 2GB HDD's full of games, but that's a long way off. I don't plan on getting to work on that until I've gotten the Win3.1 pack done.

You're welcome anon. Not saying i won't ever add something to this again, but at the moment i feel like i've accomplished what i wanted to accomplish with this project. Back in the beginning, what started out as an amateuristic attempt got improved and polished up nicely along the way. Now that it has matured, i don't see anything else that i could (or want) to improve upon.

This is a long shot, but here goes.

When I was a kid, I played a game on PC that I think was called Siege of Exile or similar. It came on a CD-ROM called 1001 Computer Games or similar. The disc itself had a bunch of little games like frogger, pacman, and a few random games that weren't too fun, but Siege of Exile (as I remember it being called), was a blast.

Here's what I remember, bear in mind that memory is fuzzy.
> top down RPG game with 4 members in party
> character creation was point buy and you could take penalties like "bad back" to increase the number of points you used for stats
> pixel graphics with sprites
> may have also been called path of exile
> there was a text command box to do things in some instances.

I know this descibes like half of retro games, but any help is greatly appreciated.

The main problem isn't even hdd space, most countries (except for example sweden) are still limited to medium internet speeds. Excerpt from 2017: "The average U.S. fixed broadband download speed was 64.17 Mbps (15th in the world) in the first half of 2017". 64,17 Mbits per second is 8mb/sec (it does slowly go up every year but not by much). Downloading 500 GB at that speed would take roughly 17,5 hours. Which is still highly optimistic because Exodos is distributed through torrents, where speeds can drastically be reduced depending on available seeds.

It literally is. But that's because it's an archival project (like a digital DOS museum), not really suitable for getting started with the best DOS games quickly.

Same reason they expect you to actually use a digital copy of the original manual, open it up with a .pdf reader, search up the secret code and fill it in the copyright protection screens. They also included full, uncompressed CD-images for every game that use them, that's why the total size got so out of hand. Bit like oranges and apples compared to this pack.

PCem anon here. It's a matter of what use case is best for the end user.

Anon's DOSBox pack is a smallish collection of the more demanding and 3D DOS games configured and tweaked to be as good as possible. It's not every DOS game you would ever want to play, but for the games it has, it's a good way to play those specific games outside of source ports. My PCem pack is a smallish collection of the shareware favorites, graphical adventures, and RPGs that made late 80's to mid 90's DOS gaming so memorable, with a lot of other stuff like pinball and edutaiment thrown in. Most games have been patched to their final official release version, and have already been configured to run from menus so the end user doesn't have to do any setup.
Both packs are great for people looking to get into the highlights of DOS gaming without having to manually do a lot of configuration, do per game config for DOSBox, or make their own virtual machine. Neither requires any knowledge of DOS to be usable either. Both packs together give you a few hundred of the best DOS games with little effort needed.
ExoDOS is an attempt by a good man from pleasuredome to get every DOS game in existence working under DOSBox without QoL improvements. Which is good if you plan on using DOSBox, but makes for a lot of useless files otherwise. Great if you want to play everything under DOSBox. ExoDOS just focuses on having one version of each game as well. Great if you want a file list that reads like a game list, bad if you want a specific version of a game.
Total DOS Collection is an attempt to archive every single DOS game, and every version, addon, etc. Focus is on .IMA and .bin(s)+.cue of original install media, but loose files in an archive can be accepted if they have no alternative. It's up to about 168GB's so far, so it's not quite as far along as ExoDOS, but it's still getting new stuff. Great for real hardware and PCem, kinda clunky for DOSBox.

I don't actually, i was just making an example because the average person is still stuck with that speed, i have a comfy 125mbps myself. I think alot of people who are maybe interested in trying out some DOS games would be turned off by the fact that they would have to download a 500gb archive (in the case of Exodos). It might not be a problem in the near future, but for now it's still better to compress and cut down in size in many occasions. The other packs in this thread being between 1 and 2 gb while still offering the best available titles is a much better compromise than to cram 7000 titles in a compilation.

Yeah, same experience here. I reported a bug on the DosBox SVN github and the response I got was "DosBox SVN is dead, DosBox-core is the most recent version", so I came back and made that post. But after trying it a bit, I regret recommending it. It's definitely unstable, crashing frequently when loading more than one game on the same session. Besides, the default settings it comes with are now focused on older games, so most games in this thread's pack need to change the CPU settings to run correctly... this is probably why it worked slowly for you. This might or not be a big deal depending on how many games you need to tweak manually.

Good to know they're still working on adding compatibility to it, but for now SVN CE is still the more reliable option. Or at least the one closest to standalone DosBox.

The changes on the libretro cores seem to be fairly recent, so there doesn't seem to be a real documentation on the differences (there's a DosBox core article in Libretro Docs, but seems to be outdated). Here's what I could gather lurking around various github issue discussions:

dosbox-svn: upstream dosbox-svn, nothing added on the libretro side.
dosbox-svn-ce: is "dosbox-svn with additional community patches (like built-in MT-32 emulation and such)" (https://forums.libretro.com/t/dosbox-svn-appear-double-in-the-core-updater/25124))

Both of these are "legacy core for old systems where dosbox-core doesn't run" (https://github.com/libretro/dosbox-svn/issues/63).). Presumably, they're not being updated anymore.

dosbox-core is where they're adding all the new stuff, like additional types of audio emulation, and 3dfx (>>6557838). But as we've found out, it's not nearly as stable as svn/svn-ce, and has higher system requirements.

So yeah, let's stick to dosbox-svn-ce for now. Seem to work just fine for all the games on the pack we're discussing. And it's not like there's a new DOS game comming out. Now, if you want add Carmageddon to it, or another 3dfx game, there's dosbox-core for that.
