Absolutely nobody would have played Plutonia with keyboard only in the 90s, by the time Final Doom was released, keyboard + mouseturning and using autorun had become the meta, and there's no reason you wouldn't do it unless you were clueless or you had a computer too weak to do both Doom + mouse drivers (in which case you wouldn't have the memory to run Plutonia).

The .wad is very much made with mouse turning in mind, don't think for a second that you were ever expected to play with keyboard only.

So I want a bunch of pillars to constantly move up and down. I can do it with WE "Floor Start Moving Up and Down". But you have to walk over each one for them to start moving. This is the best I've came up with.

The next best thing would be a switch but unfortunately there is no SR "Floor Start Moving up and down". There are only a bunch of S actions that basically move the the floor up wait then back down once (or repeatable.

Ideally I would just like them moving up and down right off the bat the second the map starts without any player intervention but you know, working with what I have here in doom format.

I can't use ACS since doom format AFAIK.

I know I messed up by doing this in doom format I'm going to do udmf or hexen next time.

Any ideas to do this?

Just change your habits. Do not turn around to walk away, use strafe for precise aiming etc. You'll make use of such skills even when you'll eventually bring the mouse back. But it's pretty tasty to play with keyboard only, no matter what WAD. Movement physics, set of enemies and weapons - all the same.

That makes me think, how long since the release of Quake did the full utilization of the mouse and keyboard become part of the PC FPS norm? Cus I know that by default Quake also had the arrow keys bound for forward, backward, and turning left and right just like Doom 1 & 2. So clearly despite of the fact that Quake was designed around using the mouse and keyboard (along with WASD for that matter, if I'm correct), Id did have the foresight to have the arrow keys for looking and movement as well, in case there were players that were still used to Doom's controls (which I'd imagine there were plenty of).

On a side note, it's clearly not retro, but I also remember some Call of Duty games had the option to turn off freelook for some reason on PC. I forget when it was dropped, but the last entries I remember having it were MW2, 3 and Blops 1 I think.

Also can someone explain to me why the first half or so of all Call of Duty games released had the feature to disable freelook, even when locking the Y axis was irrelevant at the point when CoD 1 came out? You're absolutely right lol. I think in most CoDs from 4 to Ghosts (I think?), you could strafejump in the campaign but not in the multiplayer cus the movement physics in the latter being different for balance probably. I think the acceleration however is so low that you don't notice unless you crank up your FOV.

Yeah, among other things. It definitely goes into that direction.

Youtube is a great place to start. There are many channels uploading old library/stock music and since most labels have a deal with Google you can find most of their music catalogs on YT(mostly as auto-generated contend).

Physical collecting can be expensive now, especially stuff on vinyl or older CDs.

90's era had a lot of mappers that really loved making large and obtuse levels that required a bit of puzzle solving in order to navigate. While there are people who do enjoy such levels, it most definitely isn't a popular mapping style.
Most modern maps that incorporate elements of puzzles, tend to base them around combat, rather than exploration.

I've played a small amount. Pic related are the ones I've beaten so far (I no longer use command lines btw, I took this picture right before I deleted all my command lines/shortcuts and now I just use DoomLauncher since it keeps track of my playtime, statistics, and demos). I just found it ironic that I went from one extreme to the other. I went from only playing Brutal Doom, to only playing GZDoom with non-gameplay mods like Brightmaps Plus and Vanilla Smooth Weapons Enhanced, to preferring Crispy Doom with PerK's Hi-Res SFX and Vanilla Doom Smooth Weapons, and now I prefer Chocolate Doom with zero mods. I actually like that there are no level stats because you have to truly memorize each map when doing full-episode runs. Also I never realized how annoying the "You've found a secret!" message is until I played without it. I started playing Chocolate Doom just for the lulz, just to see what it was like for Compet-N players submitting speedruns, and I ended up liking it even more than Crispy Doom. Here is my Scythe Episode 1 UV-Fast in 15:38 demo, recorded in Chocolate Doom, of course

You could look at it that way.

Common conception is that Doomguy dies at the end of E1M8, then ends up in hell (Deimos) in E2M1, then goes to the surface of hell with E3M1. Not really sure how he makes it back to Earth though.
Personally, I'd like to think he just gets viciously mauled and left for dead as he's ambushed on arrival on Deimos, and then manages to recover (perhaps with a Soul Sphere), and continues to fight. After all, would someone who valiantly fights hell's forces for the good of mankind be damned to hell when dying?

Doom 64 ending with Doomguy staying in hell to fight the demons lines up with the setup for Doom 4, and that's fine I suppose, but Doom 64 was made by Midway, and Doom 4 by a completely different iD Software, so that together with the different tone and style of Doom 64 and Doom 4, to me makes them fit less with the original games, and I personally prefer to think of them as separate from Classic Doom, or just a potential timeline that is separate from Final Doom and whatever pwad you can imagine.

I don't particularly like the idea of Doomguy and Doomslayer being the same character, as I much prefer the notion that Doomguy is Just A Man, rather than some sort of prophesized demi-god that Doomslayer is. A lot of people don't agree with me on that, but that's fine. A lot of people also get upset when I say that the (pretty recent idea of) all .wads ever fitting together in a canon with Doom 4, is kind of dumb.

that's something weird about doom where 64 and reboot have their own aesthetic/tonal differences and somehow are sequels, even if people force a multiverse just to justify it
aside from joke mods, oc mods or those based on different media, a lot of wads, gameplay mods, custom assets and others try to fit doom's aesthetic and lore
there's this specific genre of doom content that feels like fanfiction that could have been potentially canon in an alternate timeline where doom is a bigger series with more entries and content, for better or worse
even when later doom games have interesting ideas, they still feel more like their own unique take and sometimes misunderstand doom
this idea of a unified lore feels like gentrification because not every iconic franchise needs it
feels like pop culture homogenization when you think doom of all things needs lore and you already fucked up by destroying the complete visual difference doomguy and master chief had

i find it ironic when the devs talk about star wars treating luke like a different character but then treat doom like it was a "tribute to pop culture media" series that's just a simple mix of sci-fi and fantasy where every cliche can fit and the stuff that reminds you it's a series about satanism comes last
say what you want about brutal doom and the cancelled doom 4 but we've had mods and fan content that felt like more natural additions to the franchise, as if there was a scope to built around
doesn't help that the new games adopt public made concepts and memes around doom as if it was official but they don't even go further to add in something more obscure than "doot"

I feel like Doom 3D models could benefit from some sort of low poly cel-shaded art style that tried to be mimick the aesthetic of the classic games, from the color palette to details like "Doomguy's top of his head looks kinda flat but at least the aspect ratio is correct this time".
Like you could get some "capped" animation if necessary, maybe Doomguy's HUD face thing work because of said "cappyness", have an actual animated soul inside the Soulsphere, make items colorfull without how Eternal does them and maybe the simpler and less busy designs means models don't have to spawn in or disappear during gameplay.
I feel like a Doom game trying to bring its original art style in 3D in a more faithfull way would require a good enough engine that even John Carmack and most source port devs are surprised.
Something that even surprises Decino or Marphyblack.
Something that i once imagined being a weird mix of Slayer's Testaments, YPOD, some beloved wads/mods and maybe Prodeus.
Something that could be a "deeper" Doom tribute than MetaDoom i guess.
A game that would feel like fanfiction but would take years to even be concieved.

Wolf's source was released in 95, as it was fairly obsolete by that point and raycvaster engines were well understood at that point, Carmack saw no reason to keep it.
In 97 one guy decided to write a book on Doom source, which was yet to be released, so he asked Carmack, and since Quake 1 was released and Quake 2 was going to be out soon, Carmack saw no harm in releasing the source.
However Doom had some proprietary sound code in it which had to be removed, and so the source for Linux version was released instead. Ther very first port was DosDoom - backportting Doom to Dos and fixing sound.
By the time half of that book was written it was already late 98, the graphicvs were advancing very fast and the audience at large was no longer ineterested in Doom. so that guy gave up on finishing it, and so it was never released.

Carmack has always been of the opinion that science shouldn't be inhibited by patents or other restrictions, and there's a strong truth to that, to not be able to use someone else's idea and to build upon it, that would slow science down.
To him, there's no moral reason why one shouldn't be able to take the concept of some invention and not be able to use it as a base to further build upon, to make the concept even better, and he was VERY vocal in that iD Software would never file for any software patents, under the threat of quitting, and the other guys very well couldn't afford to oppose him on that, they needed his intellect and prowess to build games as advanced as they actually were at those times.

Also I like how Carmack saw no problem giving Wolf3D engine to Tom Hall and Quake 2 engine to Romero, even though they parted on rather bad terms (though in case of Romero it may have been a case of 4D chess because idtech 2 ended up really fucking him over in the end).

Doom 4 Vanilla + Sigil on Crispy Doom is pretty based.

D4V looks best in Chocolate Doom, but Sigil is limit-removing so it won't work in Chocolate Doom, so I recommend using Crispy Doom but turn off high resolution rendering and turn off uncapped framerate. You can still use widescreen rendering if you want but that might look weird in lo-res mode. Turn on Crispy Doom's vertical recoil pitch; that is the one option in Crispy Doom that I miss the most when playing Chocolate Doom

Also here is a texture fix for Sigil made by the same guy who made the Doom Sprite Fixing Project

the funniest thing bout lore in doom eternal is that it has such glaring issues with the doom 2016 lore. basically they completely fucked up.

IMO doom eternal was "design by committee". someone on the committee wanted lore, so they added lore. this also explains why some monsters, like marauder, don't fit the feel at all and fights have to be designed around "is there a marauder or not", and no pre-scripted fights even have 2 marauders.

DOOM: Presented in CinemaScope
(and yes, it's not the usual 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 aspect ratio, it's real deal 2.55:1 CinemaScope like in the '50s)
>the extra horizontal view of ultra-widescreen monitors but with an extra bit more width thanks to being in 2.55:1 CinemaScope
>still retains that crunchy retro look of being in a resolution close to 400p while not being too pixellated
>runs faster on my toaster laptop than rendering in native 1366x768p (or 1080p when plugged to my TV)
>is a 2x scale to 1920x752p and 4x 3840x1504p, which would be letterboxed CinemaScope in 1080p and 4K, respectively
>most importantly, that grand '50s CinemaScope epic/musical feel in DOOM
Only got this to work with LZDoom, soon gonna try this out in other games I have.

Not usually as malicious as it looks, more often the product of development struggles. For instance, in Doom's case, Romero had effectively unlimited time to make his 8 maps, wrote the editor for it himself, had a decently-explored theme to work with, and could add any features he wanted as he wanted them. Sandy was then tasked with making 19 maps in a matter of weeks, using an unfamiliar editor, and coming up with the very setting as he mapped. Of course episode 1 has a lot more polish to it.

a few years ago when I used to play doom on ye olde doomsday engine I remember I used to regularly test monster wads on a specific map pack but I can't remember for the life of me what it was.

basically. it was the same map over and over again but each map had nothing but a single enemy type in it. masses of the same enemy in a single room and once you killed them all you moved onto the next map, the next enemy type being in that map, so on and so forth.

anyone remember anything like this? even if its not exactly what I'm talking about, anything similar around?

Even more fun to me than Knee Deep In The Dead, the second episode is where I think the first game really gets into gear. If anything, it's Doom 2 which frontloads a lot of its good levels, then is a real mixed bag after the first third of the game.

>Dimension Of The Doomed
>The Realm Of Black Magic
>The Nether World
>The Elder World
I think these are all equally as fun, Quake is a blast throughout the entire thing, only Shub-Niggurath is a let down.

>Lunar Apocalypse
>Shrapnel City
I think they're honestly more consistently better than Hollywood Holocaust, which is short, and some of the levels I think really drag. The Birth is completely uneven, with a mix of really good levels, some of the best in the game, and some pretty poor ones, some of the worst in the game.

That's the thing with Duke Nukem 3D, as goofy and cartoonishly macho it is, and as juvenile as it is, the levels can often be very dark, gloomy, and creepy.

After all, would someone who valiantly fights hell's forces for the good of mankind be damned to hell when dying?
That is what I always figured too, I saw the "death" upon arrival on Deimos as just a cool framing device in the context of the game itself as an easy implied explanation for how you get to Hell but I never took it literally as Doomguys death as some do. I could be wrong but that is my head canon.

As for the Doomslayer being the one and only original Doomguy, I love it. Had a lot of trouble connecting with Doom 4 simply because it didn't seem to be the Doomguy I have grown so fond of over the decades. I was like "ugh Doomslayer yeah yeah, reimaging, yada yada yawn". When I saw that scene in Eternal that revealed he was the same marine as in 1 and 2 and having him speak for the first time (unnecessary but I personally love the way they did it, elevating the infamous Doom comic from meme to design document and then to gospel. Alot of people say its corny but if you're gonna have Doomguy talk, using those lines was really the only way to do it in a way that wasn't totally cringe despite how cringe some may find the comic) had me literally cheering, I went back and played Doom 4 with a whole new perspective and loved it.

>> No.6546758

>>6546732
Enjoy. My preferred tactics for drone bombs is to straferun them in circles while shooting them with the shotgun, even at medium distances you'll probably score most of your shot pattern on the drone (because Duke's shotgun is generously realistic like that), and they'll 'flinch' pretty reliably from it. Don't waste rockets on them, they dodge those pretty good.

Also remember that the Mighty Boot is worthwhile, if you run up to a Pig or Trooper and then keep stomping them in the cock as you shoot them in the face, that'll kill them quickly, can be useful against lone ones.
I'll suggest you also check out Quake, Half-Life, and Rise Of The Triad. Shooters from the 90s and early 2000s are often pretty different from most shooters from the 2010s and onwards, some really dull trends stuck themselves hard on the mainstream by that point.

just use vanilla smooth weapons / perk's hi-res sfx / doom sprite fix. that's what i use if i'm playing any wad that's not vanilla-compatible. for vanilla-compatible wads i use chocolate doom with 0 mods

doom sprite fix comes with an optional dehacked file - it works flawlessly in crispy doom, but in prboom+, you cannot use the dehacked file along with vsmooth.wad because it causes buggy chaingun behavior (takes twice as long to switch weapons from chaingun) that causes demo desyncs. other than that, the mods work flawlessly and you can use them while watching demos without causing desyncs. you can even use vsmooth.wad with chocolate doom (not sure why you'd want to), but doom sprite fix requires a limit-removing port at least. don't listen to the anon that says you can just put the dehacked file inside of d2spritefix.wad to run it in prboom+, he is a LIAR. i tried it and it doesn't work (the dehacked file's changes don't appear)

After the game starts rolling in the explosive weapons in the second or so level (and 1st post-shareware level IIRC) I'd say Wang is fairly balanced for a regular FPS player playing for the first time. Don't worry about struggling on the first level since it's notably more annoying than the others if you don't know the secrets to get said explosive weapons early. I personally had more frustrating deaths to the invisible explosive ninjas that OHKO you out of nowhere than to the hitscanners, which I found easier to deal with compared to cultists in Blood.
