Hey guys I work at a retro game story

ask me anything and I'll post some stories to go along with slow threads

>8 year old walks in with some guy who i think is uncle or dad
>he points at the sega saturn in the case
>Dad shells out 40 bux
>kid is happy as fuck
>Ask him what he's planning on playing
>He looks around
>asks for Panzer Dragoon Saga, Nights, and Megaman 8
>Tell him PDS is rare
>he laughs and takes nights and MM8
>says to dad "i'll save all my money to pay panzer dragon ssaga
>Smile through all this
Kid was so cool. I hope he enjoyed his saturn and found a cheap copy of PDS
Anyways that happy shit is boring, I'll tell more raging/funny stories

>See Sanic Adventure 2
>Pick it up and see another game behind it
>Skies of Arcadia for £10

>He literally stares at SOA for a second
>He shouts at the other people working in the store "Hey guys, why didn't any of you tell me we had a rare DC game in"
>They just look at him, smile and say sorry
>He looks really annoyed and I pay him the money
>Few months later I find Shenmue there
>Buy it again from the same guy
>He is even more pissed that it's another rare DC game, and I'm buying it

Odd thing is, after that day, they got rid of the DC section. I wonder if it was the bad sales. It still pisses me off since there are no places where they sell DC games these days. Gamestation, Cex and Game just don't take them in anymore.

>I honestly can't wait for when the retro game market finally crashes
10 years ago, there was an Atari collecting bubble. Those guys were nostalgiafags who gave it up as soon as they lost their virginity, so 2nd gen games now are comparatively worthless.

The current 3rd/4th gen bubble however is not predominately nostalgiafags but hipsters who were brainwashed by the AVGN and go around with NES controller-shaped belt buckles even though most of them were born in the 90s and couldn't possibly have had anything earlier than 5th gen games as kids.

Fuck you tryhard faggots. You never saw Mega Man 2 playing in a store kiosk in 1988.

OP where are you I seriously want to know what you guys are thinking with this. I could understand MAYBE $25 for a mom-and-pop brick-and-mortar store.
but $37. thirty. seven.
super mario kart. 37 dollars.

The store was neat and all but I seriously doubt I'll be back because after seeing that I can't imagine I'd ever get a decent price on an older game I'm looking for. I check the goodwill down the street at least once a week every week so I'm around there a lot. Shame.

Gaming Source is ok but they pay the least for trade-ins out of any store in the area and their prices are higher than Retro Games Plus. They do the best job of cleaning up old carts and replacing batteries, though.

Yo /vr/

Just found a place called play n trade down the street.

Anyone know if its legit?

I liked it. Dreamcast saturn and genesis games were all 2 bucks a piece. It's like they really hated sega at my place. It may differ because iirc play n trade the business sells their name, building establishment, and essentials but must be really lenient on how each store sells games.

they are all individualy owned so prices will vary. Last thing I bought from mine was a dreamcast for 30 bucks.

A few months ago I sold my N64 with 4 controllers and 20 games (SM64, BK/BT, both gold Zeldas, other standard fare) to a guy who wanted nothing more than to couch it with his friends and play Mario Kart. I'm not interested in collecting and I hadn't played 64 in years, so I let him have it for 70 euro and I still feel good about it.

Oh shit, i've been there before. Some of the prices on the display stuff seemed like a little much, but I ended up getting Phantasy Star IV for $25, with the box and manual which isn't too bad.

It's a variable when it comes to old/used games. Never preorder from them. It takes a fucking eternity after the release date for them to get the game.

I too work at a retro/modern gaming store. The worst people are the ones who bring in a stack of shit games and think they're worth gold.

"Yew only give a dollar but ya sale it for teen!"

People don't fucking realize that it's a business, not a charity, and has to pay wages, salaries, bills, rent AND make a profit on top of it.

Then there's the fuckers who bring in new release games stolen straight from Redbox, and other obviously stolen shit.

And the "What's yet cheapest...."

Working at a game store has made me hate people who play video games.

Used to work at a retro game store, found some weed and pills in a baggie in the expansion slot of an N64 some guy was trying to sell us. He looked like he pissed himself when we pulled it out. My manager was pretty chill though, she just said that we have to dispose of it, didn't make a fuss.

I really miss working there, been thinking about going back since I had to forcible quit my other job, but in the end it wouldn't be enough for rent let alone utilities and food.

On the flipside, one of our local Gamestop manager constantly acts like he's jacked up, I haven't seen him around and I'm pretty sure he got fired.

Every other place is atleast an hour away and diesel is fucking 2+ bucks/litre.
