Dwayne was partaking in a head to head Nibbler score attempt but his game froze ruining his attempt. When the tech in charge of the machines looked into it he saw that Dwayne had secretly replaced the Nibbler board provided with his own Nibbler board - and didn't even mount it correctly just left it hanging in there which likely caused the freeze.
Later we see that his game loads levels something like 30% faster than normal Nibblers, and its doing it right there side by side with his opponent's cabinet. This matters in a Marathon game such as Nibbler.
He claims he never noticed, but if you're an experienced player, you'll notice that right away. The board was found to be, not tampered with exactly, but faulty in a fortuitous way as to cause the error.
Dwayne's 'ohhh I see it... it IS running fast' reaction when he is shown the side by side footage is laughable.

Playing 8bit and some 16bit games on MAME should be a different category though. MAME doesn't emulate arcade hardware at the cycle level, it's a collection of bodges to get stuff playable. Games like Donkey Kong, Bubble Bobble and the like are HIGHLY dependant on the characteristics of their board for random numbers and MAME doesn't emulate that. Behavior of the objects on screen, barrel spawn rate and the like is different in MAME. It's entirely possible DK is EASIER in MAME. The game might exhibit less randomness overall. The problem with running DK is that the game is too random, in a perfect play scenario your score can vary hugely. Perhaps in the particular build of mame the variability is lower?
Point being MAME introduces too many what ifs? that would take days and days of rigorous testing to prove or disprove. It should be the default position that any pre-90s game should not be played on MAME. Post-90s it's more likely the game runs on predictable logic. That's just reality.
