For an early 3D game, controls, combat and navigating the environment were really well done. Nothing fancy and a bit clunky by today's standards, but by keeping it simple it meant you were able to play confidently quickly.

The story was really hands off - you knew what you were looking for at the start of each chapter, and that was it. The narrative largely came from your environment, in how it changed as you progressed, and how atmospheric each location was.

Combat was sparse, so it felt exciting when it happened, and when it didn’t it helped contribute to your feeling of isolation.

Lara was a character who appealed to male and female gamers - she was a sexy, confident, grown-up dual wielding badass who didn’t need to explain why she was the main character.

It took itself seriously - it didn't apologise for itself with goofy humour.

Unexpectedly and satisfyingly creepy, especially in Egypt and Atlantis.

It knew when to surprise you - the T-Rex, going under the Sphinx, entering the golden pyramid - and when not to (when you find Qualopec, for instance).

Unapologetic hot mommy-milkers protagonist with dual pistols. Kills animals, people, monsters, who cares. Sends you to remote silent dungeons full of traps, environmental dangers, beasts, etc, with no instructions, makes you figure it out on your own. It's hard but not too hard. It has the best 3d level design I think I've ever seen (the franchise, not necessarily tr1). It has those magical ps1 graphics. It's video-gamey in some of the best ways, not realistic. Doesn't bother you with unnecessary story or characterization, practically no drama. Exploration, combat, hazard-navigation, puzzle-solving; it's pure video game. They just don't make them like this anymore.

Only like the other anon pointed out, it isn't. The first two games are blatantly Indiana Jones meets Mummy trilogy meets modern setting. The whole "Dude, it's like Tomb Raider, but with dude!" is retarded. And for the same reason the fact the 2nd reboot decided to be Uncharted, but with random chick named Lara Croft in it (since that's all that this Lara has in common with everything else in the franchise) is just painful. Yes anon, a watered down, theme park version of TR1 is the best way to enter the series. A game so bad it managed to miss the titular anniversary, piss off both old and new fandom and get panned into oblivion by journos and remain worst selling TR in history to this day. A game so bad, it was given for free with low-tier graphic cards, just to get rid of the surplus. Of course it is the best entry point!
It's a wonder you didn't suggest TR'13 outright, you fucking zoomer. If you must push Crystal's games, at least pick Underworld or Legend instead, you god-damn moron.

So how do those repacks the anon always posts in these threads compare to the Steam versions?

>> No.6535305

>>6535207
No DRM bullshit, better combination of patches, AoD is playable, GOLDs are included (good luck with that anywhere else).
Said that, TR2 seems to bug out for most of anons due to video codec issue after finishing Great Wall (some problem with that particular cutscene). So for TR2, you either luck out or use GoG version instead.
>why not using GoG then
Different set of patches (most recent =/= best =/= bug-free), loading time issues with TLR on most machines, worse pre-set for TR1 performance in DOS-box (easily fixable if you know how) and again, no GOLDs

So the hierarchy is roughtly:
Original releases on pre-64 OS > Cenega's repacks >= GoG releases > original copies on modern rigs > Steam version > any sort of "freebies" to vidya magazines released throughout the years

>> No.6535307

>>6535207
>>6535305
And that hierarchy obviously holds only true if you know what you are doing and which patches use for AoD and Chronicles. If you don't, original releases go to the bottom of the list.
Well, almost, since OpenLara is bottom-tier regardless of any other factors and shouldn't even be part of any sort of tiering.

Too bad nobody's recommending Arsunts patch for TR2...

https://drive.google.com/file/d/11lBNeYMyw8chn2iDliPULV5OSzP1xTzu/view

Changelog: https://github.com/Arsunt/TR2Main/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md

>> No.6535364

>>6535360

Instructions from Arsunt's post on TRF

First of all there is ExtraOptions folder. It contains REG files, that change some TR2Main settings in the registry. All files are safe, you can check them using notepad. Just double click any REG file to set an option. In the future releases there will be redesigned setup dialog with all these settings. For now there are just REG files.

Copy some files into your game folder:
TR2Main.dll is the main file that makes all the magic.
tomb2.exe is almost original exe from 1997 with few changes to give all the power to TR2Main.dll. Never patch this EXE with 3rd party patches, you don't need them, everything that you may want, is already out of the box, including FOV, widescreen, even 4K support. Soon it will get external textures feature.
ffplay.dll is brand new FMV player based on ffmpeg project. It supports RPL, MP4, BIK and many other videoformats.
TR2Main.json is text configuration file that already allows to set custom watercolors, loading screen pictures, barefoot levels. All things are set to PS1 values, but anyone can edit it (by Notepad++ for example). This file will get even more cool features in the future.

Copy files from patch data folder to your game data folder:
barefoot.sfx is barefoot steps SFX pack. There are just 4 sound effects inside the pack, I took them from PS1 version, and remastered a little bit (high frequency range is restored). You must enable barefoot SFX by REG file if you want them.

>> No.6535367

>>6535364
Cont':

Copy whole pix folder to your game folder. It contents:
Full set of PCX pictures for the original game and The Golden Mask including US/UK logo. You can select the logo version by proper REG file. No need to rename or delete picture files.
Remastered loading screen pictures in PNG format. All other properly remastered pictures are ready, and I will publish them very soon. You must enable remastered pictures and/or loading screens by REG files if you want these features.

Copy some files from your Golden Mask data folder to your game data folder:
LEVEL1.TR2 - LEVEL5.TR2, but don't copy ASSAULT.TR2 and TITLE.TR2. The original game files will be used instead.
TOMBPC.DAT must be renamed to TOMBPCg.DAT before copying. The original game will still use its TOMBPC.DAT.
MAIN.SFX must be renamed to MAINg.SFX before copying. The original game will still use its MAIN.SFX.
You don't need to copy any PCX files, because PCX in data don't matter for TR2Main if pix folder is presented.

If you want to copy your old saves into TR2Main, create saves and savesGold subfolders in your game folder. Copy savegame.* files that you need.
To launch normal game just run tomb2.exe
To launch setup dialog run tomb2.exe with -setup option. You may want to create shortcut for that.
To launch The Golden Mask run tomb2.exe with -gold option. You may want to create shortcut for that.

It was essentially 3D prince of persia- a cinematic platformer series focused on exploration, puzzles and traps. Nothing else exists like it, and reboots completely miss the point (both the PS360 trilogy and nu-Lara trilogies). The grid system was great since it removed all trial and error from platforming. You can tell if a jump is possible simply by looking at it since Lara jumps a set distance. In the newer games she snaps to edges, and you're not allowed to interact with anything but the specific ledges the devs decided. It's possible in classic TR to find alternate solutions to puzzles by climbing around or over obstacles.

If you can push past the first level of london and the kayak level you'll have a great time. It feels great mechanically, levels are tough but fair and there's a ton of variety. It disappoints me that the only takeaway most people have from the classic TR series is promo art of naked/sexualised Lara. The gameplay is unique and the atmosphere unrivalled, and yet the only thing anyone sees is a pair of low poly tits.

>> No.6543332

Has there been any good level editors levels released recently? I kind of stopped playing them, because the people that make them 9/10 times create them in such a manner that the artificial difficulty is through the roof, and the other times full of game breaking bugs. Also I just remembered a lot of them try putting too much objects into the levels and/or using too high poly meshes so the whole level stutters and you end up getting the game running at 10 frames.

That was only for 3, which is kinda funny because before that Core had a bit of a chokehold on how Lara was to be presented which caused some issues with the original Nightmare in Vegas level:

"We decided to do a bonus fun level/secret level at the end of the game set in Las Vegas. We brought back all the famous monsters as bosses… I think the yeti and the big bird, the dinosaur and we decided it would be a good idea to have all enemies be Elvises. You know, different period Elvises. So we had the jail house rock Elvises, striped shirt. We had the Vegas Elvis in his white jumpsuit. And we did it in black and white and a little bit of gold, [they] were the only colours. And we thought we'd change Lara up a bit, so we gave her a leopard skin jumpsuit. Just the way that was designed, it had an extra ''pixel'' in the cleavage. You know, we didn’t really notice that or anything but we thought we'd give her a different look for this fun level which very few players would actually be end up getting to see. We took it down to E3 to promote it, and Core were on me like a flash. First thing they said to me was ''Take out that extra pixel'', so they knew exactly to the pixel what Lara was about. I mean, that always amazed me. Of course they said the jumpsuit made her look like Peg Bundy. So, I had to rush back to San Francisco and change everything, put the colour back in [and] change it back to one of the approved outfits."
