Is the first mario game worth playing? I can't be the only one that find it stiff. Is there a rom hack that fix the gameplay.

>> No.6526563

it's only really interesting for historical purposes, you can just skip to mario world if you want, which is a huge advancement

actually, the first Mario game was Donkey Kong.

if it's the first mario game then why they call it donkey kong

It can literally be beaten in 10 minutes. What's the point of fixing it when there's barely anything to play?

It has better physics than any other platformer, unless you're playing it via software emulation and/or on a digital display

>>6526559
Yes. I go back to it every now and then.

Play USA Super Mario Bro 2, Super Mario Bros 3, and Super Mario World for an introduction. The earlier games are not worth it.

Might as well. I mean, it’s a fun game, and obviously one of the most important ever.

Yeah. Still one of the best games on the system

Then play SMB1 and SMB2(J) when you're ready to play the best ones

But they will have already played 3. 2J is best experienced after you play 1, though.

What are some good hacks bros

>> No.6527359

I still find it fun but I think you kinda had to be there. Even though it was released before I was born it was a prevalent part of my childhood. NES hardware/games was everywhere and if you had one people would play it when they came to your house. I learned the tricks in the game from older kids I watched playing it and sometimes even my dad's friends when they were hanging out at our house all drunk and shit. Even though the 2 player mode wasn't really worthwhile I can remember that game being a bit of a social experience. My wife is younger than me but she grew up playing it on some famiclone so we were able to bond over playing it.

yes absolutely
it boggles the mind how playable it is for being over 30 years old

Original Mario Bros with two player simultaneous multiplayer gameplay. Your ability to block or stomp on your opponent makes it the first true fighting game, and the first true Smash Bros.

Only if you're using save states between levels.

>I can't be the only one that finds it stiff
You don't get a (You). Show me an NES game that isn't "stiff". Mario actually slows to a stop rather than just abruptly, and jumps based on the momentum you build up by running. It's one of the better ones. Stop complaining over nothing. Next you will find it "janky".

>> No.6528748

>>6526559
It is. As someone who dislikes retro (80s) games, I'm consistently amazed at how good Super Mario Bros. is in virtually every aspect (gameplay, visuals, audio).

Gaming being dogshit until gen 4 saved it isn't exactly an uncommon opinion around here.

>> No.6528808

>>6528727
How about any game that responds to inputs instantly instead of sluggishly accelerating into full motion and fighting off momentum when stopping? Even castlevania is 10x more responsive

>> No.6528818

>>6528808
The physics in Mario made the character movement more realistic. Belmont and Samus respond to the exact input but they might as well be robots for how they control. Their respective games are better than Mario for different reasons, but in terms of physics the innovations in Mario blew everything out of the water back then.

>> No.6528864

>>6528827
Not really. The "realism" of SMB1 is actually ass. It's like having input delay on. You tend to press buttons harder to compensate for the shitty feedback.

>> No.6528903

The only thing that would need to be patched in is better visual feedback on how fast Mario's moving, like better running animations and the meter from SMB3. The physics are fine on their own.

It's pretty good and worth playing, but I will agree with you on the fact that is is stiff and doesn't compare to any newer title. Play through it a couple of times but you don''t need to play it during every Mario marathon. you can skip the Lost Levels though

>> No.6528982

>>6528961
He is right in it being stiff though. but a ROM hack is unnecessary

>> No.6528998

>>6528827
Not really. As somebody who didn't grow up in SMB1's prime and had access to SMB3 and SMW right away, at first I also thought it controls stiff and weird. It's not nearly as approachable as all its sequels, it's a game you've got to learn to appreciate.

>> No.6529337

Mario stops exhaling bubbles when he swims at the top of water stages. Pretty neat touch for an ancient game.

>> No.6529421

>>6526559
Yes, it’s tons of fun and you can even continue if you feel you need to (though the warp zones make this unnecessary). It’s also one of the shortest Mario games coming at only 32 levels. It is a bit of a challenge but it’s nothing compared to the lost levels.
>>6526590
Maybe if you only play like 6 levels
>>6528808
Play without input lag before you run your mouth again, retard. You take a second to speed up but you get used to it very fast

no, there's nothing to fix that. limitations of the hardware we all were used to back then, zoomer. ntsc users had it better. pal users suffered with slower game play.

Based angry cat poster.
Super Mario 1 and 2 are fucking marvels of good platforming design and Mario controls flawlessly.
Doki Doki Mario fucked the physics and core gameplay.
Mario 3 fucked the concise level design.
Mario 4 is a cute game filled with fun but not as good of a raw platformer as 1 & 2.
