6517971 No.6517971 [Reply] [Original]

In the year of our lord 2020, somehow an arcade has opened in my backwater town in the middle of nowhere. The machines are all those "2000 games in one", but they seem pretty complete with many famous titles.

Which games should I play before they close? And which version of King of Fighters should I play?

All of them. Twice.

Also, forgot to add: twenty or so of them are KoF, half of those being versions of '97. Is any version worth more attention?

Aight, here's a couple "must play" games I can think of
>SF2 Turbo
>Alien vs Predator
>Puzzle Bobble/Bust a Move
>KoF 98 UM
>Windjammers
>Baseball Stars 2
>King of the Monsters
>TMNT: Turtles in Time
>Metal Slug
>Sunset Riders
>Mortal Kombat
>Shock Troopers

Etc. It's absolutely not exhaustive but that's the games I'd be looking for with such limited time.

Arcades were about the games, but once the arcades went away because of home consoles, some people realized the community and social aspect was the real commodity.

People don't open up arcades these days for the best gaming experience. They do it so that you can have a reasonable gaming experience while meeting other people interested in the same shit, making friends, having a non-lonely place to go while fucked up etc.

I believe the only two KoF games that have updated versions are 98 and 2002 Ultimate Match. The rest are shitty romhacks. I know there's one 2002 romhack that appears on those kinds of things that people actually like, but that's the only exception.

By the way, if there are that many versions of KoF 97, it's certainly a cheap Chinese multicade board. 97 is pretty infamous for only really being played in China (the rest of the world plays 98 or 2002).

There are hundred upon hundreds of older arcade games that fucking nobody's played outside of the most hardcore. There's a barcade in Denver called Akibahara, for example, that's loaded with CAVE shooters. So the games are new for all but the seven autists who've played Mushihimesama, Pink Sweets, or Muchi Muchi Pork. But it's also balanced out with a mix of more standard barcade fare (Simpsons arcade, Mortal Kombat, and such), an entire room of fighting games (which I've heard they took out and replaced with a console area), and other non-CAVE imports (Music GunGun, Taikomaster, Game Tengoku, and a few others). You could stick something like Canonball Spike on a Naomi board and I guarantee you it's be a new game to 99% of the audience.
