Don't get me wrong, I love those genres, but think about games from 1979-1984. There weren't any "genres", besides maybe "Space Invaders clone" and a few Pac-Man-likes. There were a lot of unique concepts, like a game where you're a bubble collecting dirt and grime, a game where you were a mouse collecting stolen items and microwaving cats, a game where you fit falling tetronimoes into lines, a game where you try to create molecules, a game inside of a nuclear reactor, a game where you play Bumper Balls from Mario Party in space, a game where you Qix, whatever the fuck Pepper II is supposed to represent, etc etc etc. Once there were "genres" you could just take an existing concept and swap out the graphics and sound, you didn't need to come up with a completely new and unique idea anymore.
Some genres were less susceptible to this though, with the single-screen platformer (comic platformers?) you had to have a somewhat unique idea, no one just straight-up copied Bubble Bobble

Did mammals, reptiles, and amphibians "ruin" animal life?
Retard.

it's kinda true, old arcade games were weird as shit

>no one just straight-up copied Bubble Bobble
I don't know man they're all pretty much "bubble bobble but you stun monsters with something else"

"Ruin" is an overstatement but they definitely curtailed innovation and diversity

>>6513253
As a woke zoomennial you have no choice but to accept, nay proselytize, that cis gender mammals have ruined everything.

No, RPGs and people that like them ruined videogames and killed the Arcade.

>> No.6513923

No, genres are the natural consequence of a very good and healthy thing - games iterating on their predecessors, using the solid fundamentals and building on top of them by adding various distinguishing gimmicks. Novelty does not a good game make.

No, but FPS have ruined modern gaming.

>> No.6513971

I see what you mean. Even within those genres itself it sucked that for example every beat'em up tried to copy Final Fight instead of doing something different.

>> No.6514415

No, this sort of creativity inevitably runs dry. I mean just look at the PS2 era VS current gen/next gen. Games like Katamari Damacy or even Shadow of the Colossus just don"t get made anymore, except from the occasional quality indie. Did you watch that PS5 event, my dude? Literal fucking garbage. They opened with the fact that they are re-releasing GTA V on PS5. That was supposed to be a big deal.

I think I was way more into the idea of games with muscle dudes going through the jungle with a gun and a mission, rather than all the bizarre esoteric stuff that plagued my childhood Commodore 64, but now I’m more drawn to games that strive to go beyond the scope of the technology in interesting ways. I don’t think those games you talk about ever went away. There’s always been weirdo games.
