I'm about to start playing some Saga Frontier. It's been awhile since I've played, love the game though. It has a bit of an under-appreciation about it.

Anyways, since it's been so long, what are some general tips and things I should remember? Who should I start as? Also, feel free to discuss the game, characters, art, etc.

Saga thread!

Easiest route to get into is probably Emelia since it seems to have a good amount of guidance and a decent difficulty curve (outside of the possibility of getting trapped inside of Tanzar).

Honestly I love using robots.

I was thinking of between her or Blue, only because I love wizards. How's the Blue path again?

Blue's path isn't too bad either since it is just going to places to gain magic, and he can become pretty damn powerful during the end game. As always equip your magic users with guns because both magic and guns use the same stats.

Really? Guns and magic share stats? I never knew that. I think I'm about to have a whole lot of fun as a gun slinging wizard.

Yeah, everything aside from the WP and JP split. I found Vermillion Sand and Imprision to be very good spells, along with another light type spell, I think Mega Wind Blast. Also if you can pick up a robot in Blue's route I'd do so, plural slash with combat mastery creates a rape tier robot, especially if you load them with two power suits.

The game is grindy as fuck, and balance is... tenuous, in my experience, and NOTHING about the mechanics is explained very well, if at all. That said, I really like the game for its flavor and setting and its feel... I just really wish the development team had had time to finish it before it got published.

Also, for learning sword and fighting techs, this chart might help: http://sf.data.project.tripod.com/Zaraktheus/PC_Spark_Chart_For_Export.htm

It shows who has a 'talent' for learning a given skill. Any character can learn any skill, but the chance of learning a skill you don't have the 'talent' for is 1/256, as I understand it.

Some facts that I have picked up from spending too much goddamned time on this game.

>>Shields are helpful although they will not activate if you use a magic spell
>> For Assellus story invest in the mystic skills. Monster absorbs -> Stat boosts
>> Quickest way to Lifesprinkler is to use a katana skill over and over again.
>> Light Magic over Shadow, Arcane over Rune
>> The Junk glitch get decent equipment early
>> Different armours affect different hidden stats (There should be a list somewhere)

Well Romancing SaGa 1 got a remake for the PS2 which is god damn good. Romancing SaGa 3 has a serviceable fan translation.

I heard that with Romancing SaGa 2 it is more than just changing the text, that alterations to the text can also change mechanics of the game thus make it unplayable thus you need knowledge of that as well, hence why it really never goes anywhere.

3 has a translation? I thought 2 was the one with a playable yet rough translation, 1 had a menu hack and nothing else, and 3 is lol shit out of luck.

Minstrel Song looks cool but man I want the SNES ones specifically. I know everyone's gonna call me a nostalgia whore but I just love the older aesthetic.

Yes, Romancing SaGa 3 is the only one with a real translation.
http://www.romhacking.net/translations/415/

For Romancing SaGa 1 just play the PS1 version. It has item durability, black smithing, sparking, combination attacks, field skills, the entire event system for quests, it is just phenomenal, you'd be depriving yourself for no reason at all. It is how a remake should be. Also apparently the original had a bit of a monster problem, as in there were too many monsters on the field so you'd constantly get thrown into battles.

Yeah that is the only way to really play RS3 in English right now, so either brush up on moon or don't hold your breath on anything. It will get you through, but the translation wasn't excellent, especially near the start when the character said go left and it lead me to my death when it was just the translator mixing up the directions left and right.

I want to play Romancing SaGa 2 as well, following a line of emperors and empresses, apparently you got money by expanding on your empire thus collecting taxes from your territories, and the fact that you fight off against the heroes of old that are pissed off that everyone forgot about them.

Also would be nice to see the first game that introduced sparking.

I just downloaded it from what ever sites had PS1 games. Sure they were slow but all I did was waited. I loaded up a bunch of them on my PSP, SaGa 1-3, Romancing SaGa 3, and SaGa Frontier 1 and 2.

I wish, but SaGa tends to be too unfriendly towards people who are new to JRPG's, or at least are use to certain sorts of them. Though I have been thinking if they released either Romancing SaGa 2 or 3 (especially 3) it would have easily been regarded as a classic RPG for the SNES. Though I don't think the series was ever meant to be very popular, and then you have other people like this that abohorr the series: http://www.largeprimenumbers.com/article.php?sid=saga

>> No.651394

>>651359
While that would be an amusing alternate reality, it is something I'd doubt would happen because most games (outside of Final Fantasy Legend III and SaGa Frontier II) are more about playing the game than story, to the point that most people are turned off by the games because the lack of text or cinematic's chiming in to indicate they are progressing.

I mean unlike Earthbound, they would be much harder to get into because of how they handle progression and their difficulty. But holy crap I wish there was a huge interest, because the creator still feels like he has a duty to give what the fans want, and that would be Romancing SaGa 4.

My mind cannot even fathom how awesome such a concept could end up being.

The original version of RS1 is pretty much shit. There's field enemies everywhere, the leveling system is too rudimentary and not really that fun (you level up specific weapons to unlock more weapon skills or some shit), and it isn't in English. I really do love them sprites though. RS3 is nice and all, but it's like the difference between FF4 and FF6.

>> No.654602

Wasn't Saga Frontier 1 pretty much meant to be RS4 already?

>> No.654626

Yeah, I saw a video on Romancing SaGa 1 for the SFC and the cave was CRAWLING with enemies, like every single square had an enemy, which is why it is worth saying to stick with the remake because it is a massive improvement.

>>654602
No clue, but I don't consider it in the theme of the Romancing SaGa games. It feels more like the first two SaGa games with the open world of the Romancing SaGa trilogy.

>> No.655292

>>654602
It's not quite the same structure as the RS games, really, because there isn't an overarching plot that each character gravitates toward. Instead they all have their own plots to deal with. Also they brought back monsters and robots, so yeah what >>654626 said. Maybe if they had more development time it would have ended up more like RS. Fuck I really want another RS-style game from them. The DS remakes of FFL2&3 are cool and all, but I want my open-world 8 character selection back.

Can I ask you guys something?
I want to give the FFL games (GB) a shot, and I want to know if it's recommended to use the restoration patches available on romhacking.net?
Most of the time they make those when the NA localization removes some content or the translation is just bad, so I wanted to be sure.

>> No.656190

>>655304
They butchered the hell out of the music in the SaGa 2 remake, but I actually found some music that I liked in the SaGa 3 remake. Though at least they got rid of random encounters.

Though I did hear an orchestrated version of some of the SaGa 2 music in an Uematsu tribute and I hated the imagining of Save the World. Honestly, the only person who should touch Kenji Ito's music is Kenji Ito.

>>655773
Honestly you don't really need to do so, text is usually sparse or to the point anyways that it won't matter as much. Unless it gets rid of the SAW glitch and turns the glass sword into one use then just play the original ROM.

I personally haven't played the restoration patches, but I think it is bananas to really be concerned about such a thing.
