What a time to be alive, weebs. Has anyone here actually tried to complete a whole game with this feature?

Does OCR work with all games? And how decent are the translations?

https://www.libretro.com/index.php/retroarch-1-7-8-ai-service-how-to-set-it-up/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hMRHvk-Lu0

Wouldn't play a JRPG or VN with this but for games with minimal text like Devilman where you just need to know what kind of item you are using etc this seems functional, what do you think? Brightis could be doable with this?

https://ztranslate.net/docs/faq
https://gitlab.com/spherebeaker/vgtranslate

>ztranslate.net server does an API call to Google to OCR the text and another to translate the text. This costs about $1.50 per 1,000 calls. So, to source a game that needs 10,000 screenshots would cost about $30. The quota system is there to limit the total number of these API calls so I don't go broke.

what's interesting is it seems like it can handle text modifications meaning fan translators could fix the translations and the software would display the text in that type of black box over the game, instead of all the headaches of having to tinker with game files and inject the translations within...?

>How do I make a translation myself?
>There are two steps to making a translation: sourcing the images, and fixing the translations. To source images, first log into ztranslate.net, go to the settings link and copy the API key given. In your ZTranlate client folder, edit the config.json file and paste the API key into the value of the user_api_key field. Now, run the ZTranslate client in the background and do not load a package. When you press "~", it will grab a screenshot of the window in focus, send the image to the ztranslate.net server and display an automatic translation (this may take a few seconds). Do this for all the visible text in the game, or as much as you can handle.

a game like mizzurna falls which has been translated ages ago but is still unreleased because adding it into the game requires insane file hacks, could maybe be easily fixed with this type of thing?

>>6507097
>Why not just modify the executables with the translation instead?

>There are a few reasons for this approach. The first is accessibility. Allowing translators to avoid having to do hex editing, and adding helpful functionality (like suggested machine translations, and a contextual screenshot) makes the translation process a lot faster. Second, the approach can do things simple hex editing can't do, like translate text stored in an image, add translated subtitles for audio, and give translations for games that can't be hex edited at all (for example, many console games).

>Besides that, hex editing can be difficult if the game uses strange compression or encodings for the strings, or it may be difficult to change the length of the translated string inside the .exe (for example, how do you translate "Pilz" into "Mushroom" if you can only use 4 characters?).

It's great, I've been playing a bunch of PC-FX games. Takes a few minutes to set up. Only complaints I have are that it's hard to pause with auto-scrolling text in some games, the engrish common with machine translation, and in the Android version the hotkey I set gets deleted every time I close a game. Maybe they fixed that last one in a recent update though.

Neat idea. Should be useful for quick menu translations and stuff.

If this makes fan translations easier then I'm all for it. I speak enough Japanese to translate games with limited amounts of text but I don't have the technical skills to actually patch the games.

>> No.6508910

Honestly, the level of translation is so bad it's only useful for simple sentences like RE-style puzzles, JRPG menus and the like. But you can learn Japanese to that level in a few days/weeks anyway.
I guess it will help some lazier people?

>> No.6508973

We are absolutely headed towards a future where this will be a thing. Hell most of the tech already exists. OCR exists, Text-to-speech exists, machine translation exists... it's only a matter of putting it all together and perfecting it. It's not too far off. Whether or not you'll see this concept's full potential realized as part of a project such as RetroArch is another question.

This feature is nice, but it shows how we've been too lazy and relying on big mega corps to do translation work. we need open source translation services. >only americans thinks they are too good for that or that it makes them "less patriotic".
Do people ironically believe this? In America the majority of the time there is 0 practical use for learning another language besides Spanish. Even Spanish is debatable because anyone who comes in here pretty much has to learn English anyways. You can take German, French, whatever you want in school. However, you'll forget all of it within a few years of taking the classes because there is never a period where you will actually use it unless you're consuming their media constantly which is rare and is only seen for things like Japanese.

As opposed to being in Europe where the next country over (the size of a state in the US) you have people who largely speak a completely different language. You also have Eastern European countries which speak Russian and their native language. I suspect a large amount of countries in Europe that normally speak something like Swedish, Germany, French, Finnish, Estonian, Welsh, etc also speak English because most of the internet and tech is built on it.
