Is hedon any good? I just started it (the freeware pk3 at least) and I'm not sure how I feel about it. On one hand it seems like it's more of a "quake with sprites" than a doom derivative, but on the other hand I'm floored to see the geometry that's being pulled off in the (gz)doom engine. My biggest complaint so far is that the UI is ugly, I wish there was some way to get the classic status bar.

Id used to place the development files inside the devmaps directory, which was inside the home directory. There, you would find maps named in this fashion: E1M1.wad, E2M1.wad, E1M6.wad, etc., a directory called data_se which had three lumps: pnames.lmp, texture1.lmp, texture2.lmp; a directory called cdata which had maps named in this fashion (for doom2, tnt and plutonia): MAP01.wad, MAP02.wad, MAP30.wad, etc., and two lumps: texture1.lmp, pnames.lmp. There was also a directory called devdata, also in the home directory, which stored the files default.cfg and the IWADS.

Ho kay we got ourselves a winner.
Doom 2 it is. Now i'll be doing the following in the meantime.
-managing a means of communication for anyone willing to use discord. If you don't want to use discord please provide me with an alternative to keep up with you.
-managing the bracket which you may see here https://challonge.com/shkek8x0
-Testing out and getting the server ready. There will be a practice server as well as the official server. Both requiring a password. Later on i'll get some /v/irgins to test out my doom server.
-Testing out my twitch streaming skills. If any of you have any alternatives to twitch in case we get banned(probably will) i'm glad to hear.
-shilling to get players/viewers for the event on multiple boards/servers.
-answering any questions.
I'm excited to see how this turns out. Hopefully it won't flop!

I don't hate Freedoom. I just think it lacks passion.

>> No.6503459

I asked that before, but maybe someone actually recall that obscure thing. When I was a kid, my father got some kind of map pack for Duke Nukem and I distincly remember a particular map for being bugged. I think it was some kind of cave with a fast-moving stream and teleporter. If I took a teleporter I would end up underwater and drown. And if I followed a stream I would fall into water and die from fall damage. Seems like someone forgot to make water surface not solid.

Maybe he just found some map pack with no quality control. Maybe game itself was bugged, wrong version or something. But ever since I wanted to track down this map and find out what was up with that.

I appreciate this game now more than ever, these shootouts are intense. It's made me realize how useful flare guns and voodoo dolls are, too, and it's been fun managing cultist painstates. Previously I'd just savescum the whole time like I used to do with Doom, I'm really surprised at the difference here with Blood especially.
I'm starting to wonder how much the challenge hinges on the Cultists, though. The Haunting is one of my favorite levels but it's just zombies and monsters with the only thing difficult being how you manage the stone HP sponges, none of these farts present a challenge otherwise. Still a wonderful level but making me realize these little guys are Blood's secret sauce.

If you have to use LZDoom because of a low-spec machine in the first place, it's usually the Direct3D renderer because the overall quality of OpenGL drivers (in particular for ancient Intel integrated graphics) on Windows is worse, to the point that browsers use ANGLE to translate WebGL calls to Direct3D 11 or 9.

Voodoo Doll is when you put extra player starts. The last one put will be the one you control, while the rest will just stand there. They might pick up items and receive damage. As I just discovered they don't receive damage from damaging floors, but they are affected by death-preventing effect of "exit at 1%" and they don't trigger exit either.

Newbie Mapper Problems #1: Scaling.

Just made a pair of rooms that looked really great in Doom Builder and had some nice level-change detailing and a bit of a "bigger than you can see" trick going on - but I'd managed to do it at the 4mp scale. So, door I couldn't even fit through... Back to the drawing board!

Yes, I know it's nothing special, but... I've got a plan. Sort of. Just needs a bit of adapting from my original scribbles to make it work as an actual functional Doom map. So, not bad for a first go - I think. Still lots more to learn and do though.

Voodoo Dolls are a really fascinating engine quirk, a bug really, not intended behavior (but no port fixes it).
As said, if there's a surplus start location for the Player (two separate Player 1 starts, etc), the first one will spawn a Player Pawn, but effectively an empty one, nobody is controlling it or doing anything with it, it's just there, and then the second one will be completely normal.

What makes the Voodoo Doll bug so cool is that whatever happens to the Voodoo Doll also happens to the Player, if the Player 1 Doll is shot, Player 1 takes that damage, if the Doll is mashed by a crusher, then the Player is too, his view will even lower to the ground and he'll slow down. If you're on Doom 2's Map 30 slot, where it's possible for the Player to get telefragged, the Doll can be telefragged, even by the Player himself, hence it's possible to make traps where the Player gets killed by telefragging his own Doll, as seen in TNT's Map 30.
The Doll can also pick up items, as exhibited in Plutonia's Map 28, where the Doll stands on a ledge in a little room outside the map, below the ledge are some items, and a certain action will lower the Doll down so he touches those items, and thus make the Player pick them up without him personally touching them.

The Doll can also trigger walkover linedef actions, which isn't easy to use in Vanilla Doom, but in Heretic and Boom, there are conveyor sector functions, thus what you can do is to place a Doll on a conveyor outside the map, and along that conveyor is a series of linedefs which each have their own action to something in the map.
Put a ceiling bar in front of the Doll so he's held in place, and when the real Player passes a certain linedef or presses a certain button, the bar raises, and off the Doll goes on his conveyor, triggering the actions in the sequence, in effect functioning as a crude scripting language. Going Down is the most famous example of this, making extensive use of 'Voodoo Scripting'

Some Quakeworld players believe that theirs is the “only title worthy of being called Quake”
There’s some overlap with QW players and CPMA players, who inhale adderall and legitimately compare Q3A to counterstrike in how “slow and corner-peeking” it is

There are Quake 2 singleplayers (not too many) and the multiplayers
I recall Q2 fans saying that Q3 “casualized” things by removing ramp jumps and adding instant weapon switching

The exception on Map 30 is to make the final boss work, because he only has a limited amount of spots to summon monsters on, and if that space is occupied by something already, it would have to clear that space (by telefragging what's on it), otherwise the two enemies get stuck on each other and become treadmill monsters walking in place and unable to do anything, as you can see if you ever were to try to put that encounter on any other map slot.

Whilst I personally think vanilla-compatible is not as harsh as some people want you to believe, I'd recommend "limit-removing", which is just the original formats for Doom 2/TNT/Plutonia (as used in vanilla), except you ignore the engine limits such as visplanes and drawsegs, and tell players they need a sourceport that removes limitations to play your level.

Boom is very powerful but easy to use, but it has many tricks that you can become dependant on, like I did once.

My advices for beginners is: analyze the levels you like the most, be it from pwads or iwads; ask yourself what makes them fun, pretty and overall enjoyable. Ask yourself what ISN'T fun, too. Compare your level to others', as long as they're not at an unrealistically complicated level above yours. You want to start out simple.

To make both versions at the same time you have to either gimp 64 one by making everything x86 compatible, or write 2 versions of any code that is RAM-dependent (rendering for the most time).

64-bit software written in ways optimised to utilise full potential of 64 bit will always be better than 32-bit version of same software.

No, seriously. I'm not a gamer, and for space and mobility reasons I've been buying retail laptops since about 2005. A good chunk of the community back in the 94-97 days were people who got into Doom because it was the hit thing at the time, more than anything else. These types of people moved on once the next hit thing caught their eye, or once they had a more powerful computer to be able to play the next hit thing.
By 1998, the doom community had almost completely dried up of these people, with mostly the big fans remaining.
A lot of the notable people from the community back then were also hired by various game companies.

True, and its play mechanics are fairly straightforward too - just controls for directions, use (doors/lifts), shoot, run, change weapons. No mouselook, no cover mechanics or inventory. Doom isn't necessarily an easy game, but it's one you can pick up and play without the need for tutorials and manuals. It's actually a good game for the modern busy lifestyle, given that you can play for a few minutes and it runs on pretty much anything.

I think that's another good chunk of the secret of its longevity.

>> No.6506424

I think what particularly helped Doom stay alive and well was the timing of the source release. It was released on december 1997 under the Doom Source License, 5 years after Doom 1's release, and only 1.5 years after Final Doom.

That was a pretty progressive idea, and it means we don't need to have emulators to play Doom today, or rely on someone like (say) Nightdive to sell us Doom '93 Remastered at full price.

>>6506431
>But if you just want to draw some rooms, you can just take doom and go with it.
Also true. Doom mapping isn't easy, but it's a more straightforward than for (say) Quake. I know a guy who is a professional 3D artist, and his hobby is making Star Trek sets for the latest Unreal Engine - that takes skill!

Of course Doom mapping has got much easier over time, and at least from my perspective it is a good starting point. (Not that I'll be able to carry techniques from Doom Builder to Trench Broom, but some of the ideas about space, wayfinding and flow, and setting up obstacles, encounters and puzzles will hopefully continue to apply.)

How does anti-cheat software like mods and custom content, anyway? I'd imagine it doesn't play nicely with them except under certain conditions, like Doom 2016 "snap maps". We don't have that concern...

Beginning with 2004, Microsoft has dropped the 32-bit version of Windows 10 for new OEM installations, so it's probably only a matter of time until 32-bit versions of Windows (mostly a requirement for discontinued 32-bit drivers, NTVDM/WoW or RAMlet machines with 2 GB or less) are discontinued altogether.
That said >>6505941 is right, 64-bit software can process more data at once and rely on the fact that more registers and a sensible set of SIMD extensions (which can process at least 128 bits at once) are always available. The latter is already assumed by a lot of modern 32-bit code, since those were introduced with the Pentium 4, Athlon 64 and VIA C7 by the mid 2000s. The downside is that 64-bit memory addresses are twice as large, so any data structure containing them grows accordingly.

On the Lost Soul? Basically his charge is homing and incredibly hard to avoid, but the impact does very little damage. Instead, when at point blank, he tries to do a quick followup attack that deals similar damage to his vanilla impact. Makes swarming considerably more dangerous, especially since they're more likely to trap you in place.

I posted that change a while ago, its part of my Vanilla+ modifier for Heretical Doom. It's an optional readjustment of enemy attacks and stats for when you don't want to use a monster mod, but you want things to be less easy.
The Pain Elemental in particular has a change of spitting out explosive pods rather than Lost Souls. The pods are designed to travel a small distance before being shootable, but the attack has a distinct windup animation. Basically designed to counter bullying it with fast attacks like the dragon claw, but gives a visual indication to allow the player to react in time and adapt.
For the vanilla+ modifier I just finished the last doom enemies, almost done Heretic, and halfway through Hexen. It should have a replacement for every enemy in the 3 IWADs minus the SS/Keen by the time the next release drops.

Pic related is the Centaur replacement for Hexen. He stores projectiles blocked with his shield for a counter, but his shield can be bashed with most melee attacks to stun him and dispel his charge.

There's a thing called "obedience training". All dogs need it to overcome instincts, otherwise they will act on them, but people who know fuckall about dogs think a smack and stern talking for wrong behaciour is enough, when it's really not. And then they get surprised when dogs act out on their animal instincts. There are professional trainers that will teach your dog for you, and 99.9% of dog attacks could've been avoided if their services were actually used by the dogs owner.

Although with the release of Ion Fury, I guess that's going to kick some life into the Build Engine modding/mapping community. That's a game that I'm definitely excited about after watching a few videos. (Yes, I know it's been out a while. Only recently returned to gaming, so it's news to me.)

I wonder if Wrath: Aeon of Ruin will have the same effect for interest in Quake?

>Half-Life
Been a very long time since I even looked at Half-Life, but it was the first Windows FPS I played. Tried a few maps and mods back in the day and they never really did it for me, but it's good to hear that it's still got fans. I think both Boom and Doom use the same, regular map format. Is there anything in the map data that will indicate if it is meant for Boom or vanilla Doom? Will it make a difference if I load a map in Ultimate Doom Builder using the "Boom: Doom 2 (Doom format)" option rather than "Doom: Doom 2 (Doom format)"? Archviles have little to no RNG in their damage. It's a flat 20 damage hitscan and a flat 70 damage explosion. The only variance results from the explosion being spawned slightly in front of you, so you take slightly less damage while moving backwards and slightly more while moving forwards.

You know what would be cool? An actual Sun Wukong mod, based on myths.
He's a Monkey King who sought to become god, and through challenges and adventures (and deception) did it and went to heaven, but other gods gave him a demeaning job to teach him humility. Wukong rebelled and beat up the angels and gods, so they sent him down to hell. In Hell he beat up the demons to so they expelled him back to Earth so he can't die anymore because neither heaven nor heal want to deal with him and his BS.

Notable abilities/items: flying cloud Nimbus that he can ride on thanks to special cloud-walking boots, shapeshifting staff that can change length size and weight, can creater copies of himself from his own hair. Can transform into 72 other animals completely or partially (like giving himself eagle eyes or a fish tail), and knows many other magical tricks.

I have hit the point where I do not know how to design the final area of my map. So far it's a square arena and I want to keep the player in it as long as possible. In the end his battle leads to opening a final door. But how do I keep the player in this arena long enough. In a previous map I made in 2013, my solution was to put up three small spots with stairs on which there was one baron of hell that blocked players from reaching a switch. Each switch opened one layer of the final door. I do not want to copy this again.

I also ran out of keys to use in the map. Should I do some teleport to hell thing, where the player faces monsters in a seperate area, goes through it and then automatically unlocks a trigger? Fuuuuuccck...

From a canon order, it's something like:
>Doom

TNT and Plutonia are interchangable I think but from a difficulty perspective it flows better. And don't listen to the retards here saying that UV is the best way to go, sometimes it isn't, especially in Plutonia's case, though, sometimes it is. Even then, I'd say Play on HMP and if you find it too easy go up to UV and vice versa, Sigil especially will punish an overconfident player who picks UV for a first playthrough.

Listen, all I'm trying to say is that I don't want anon discouraged at first because UV (for a first time player) is quite challenging. HMP is still challenging yet more beginner friendly. And as I said, if anon is finding it too easy he should increase the difficulty to UV.

I'm not saying UV is bad, once you get a hang of the game, UV is a lot more fun. But I'd say it's better to build the habit of doing stuff on HMP and THEN UV if the difficulty isn't enough for you, because being an overconfident retard and going UV right away will kick you in the teeth, Sigil and Plutonia being my main examples for that.

What are you smoking? I admit my knowledge on workstation prices is limited but that's just absurd. Even if we go for a 2x16gb kit, which is stretching it a lot, as you can easily get by on 16gb for now until games become more demanding. They are only around 120-150 bucks for high rated ones. But yeah, I don't really get the RAM thing either. This laptop has 8gb and does peachy for everything I do on it. Sure, if 16gb is the new normal when I replace it I'll roll with it, but I don't see that I'll need 32 or 64.

Got to admit, the price of computers and parts is odd. I mean, I remember when a half-meg of RAM in a big steel box cost a fair chunk- and a decent (powerful, for the day) Windows PC cost a couple of grand but an entry-level home computer could be had for a couple of hundred.

Did I have a point? Er... computer parts (and computers) are generally quite reasonably priced, the unit prices haven't so much gone down in 30 years as the power for your spend has gone up. Maybe not "cheap as chips" (or cheap as Chinese bootlegs), but affordable, right?

However, to my surprise, switching to the software renderer not only works, but works really smooth, with virtually no CPU overhead. But, for some reason, screen transitions (melt/fade/whatever) still run at 3-or-so FPS. What is going on exactly? They aren't supposed to be that resource intensive...

It's a simple case of "If I could, I would." I have neither the time nor capital to do something like that, plus while there are people who are frustrated like myself, I doubt there's that big of a market. Plus, unfortunately I'm like a two hour drive from Romero and his studio in Bumfuck, Galway. If I was closer I might've but I doubt he's really looking for that. Plus, I'm a, for lack of a better term, consoomer. I just want the shit not to distribute it. Granted I can't even afford one if I wanted to. Currently typing this from a shitty Optiplex with a Core 2 Duo with purely integrated graphics and no Graphics Card. I suppose if you have the extra money to pay for the mark up purely because we don't have Micro Centers or a good Newegg (they have this inane practice of waiting until checkout to add tax and shipping to the price and it can often make a huge difference and fuck you over.) But for a poorfag like myself, it's a bit depressing. But I've saving up for a better PC, hopefully should have something good by the end of the year.

Couldn't tell you what a Newegg is. I'm not a PC builder (any more), I just buy retail laptops. Markup is rubbish, internet shopping is unhelpful... i'm the creator and main developer of the Satanic Infestation project, and i just wanted to answer some questions about the project i've seen on the last few /vr/ threads

joe-ilya was perfectly right to call the project a "cease and desist project" the project, at the time he stated that, emulated Doom and Doom 2 far too closely, what he said might have been a bit harsh, but he was correct, and similar comments eventually lead me to take the project in a different, more improved direction.

the concept drawings are not representative of how they are going to look when they're sprites, they are simply rough outlines that leave me and the contributors to fill in the missing detail, more recently, i have stopped posting concept art because i believe that even the rough concept drawings didn't leave enough for interpretation, and i do plan on creating the sprites myself, i am simply planning to do it after the maps and textures are done, because i'm sorting development priority in my case from simplest to most difficult.

nothing in the BSD license forbids it from being used in conjunction with another license or licenses, in this case, all of my assets are in the public domain using cc0, and contributors can pick any license they desire for their assets as long as it's a permissive free license that allows for commercial use, i even accept certain copyleft licenses that don't force the entire project to be under the same license, again, nothing forbids me from doing this, and it expands the range of possible contributors by allowing someone who may not like one license to submit their assets under another

Here’s a better idea: Go for realism like everyone else does. If you have square rooms connected with simple hallways, dressed up with some fantasy textures, people will call it shit. But if you swap out the textures with gray walls and dirty floors, suddenly it’s realistic and by proxy, good.
You could have a bunch of copypasted rectangles pointing up into the sky, but if you slap building textures on them then suddenly people say “wow this is like an epic rooftop fight from a movie”

I dont know exactly what you mean by engine. Of course you want an engine that works well. But you don't have to use an old engine to make a retro style game. Nor do you need to make it look just like a retro game. Although you should be careful to have consistent visuals - don't mix & match retro and modern graphics/effects.

If you don't plan on using anything complex with the altfire you can use similar methods, but use Flash overlay same way synthfire does, but invoke it with hidden inventory item rather than traditional altfire. It requires some complimentary ACS, but that's well within Zandro's reach.
Someone posted such a solution here on this board, a few weeks ago and incidentally it was also a "universal kick" kind of mod, though very simplistic.

Yeah, the plan is to use some simple synthfire stuff where the right hand weapon exists as a flash state and this weapon will specifically rely on checking player input via ACS and then given the player respective items for using the left and right hands.

A bit of everything, the engine doesn't really matter if you make the game feel alright anyway. Map design is one of the most important things, fuck the games that call themselves retro styled fps while using procedural level generation. What is also important is to have weapons that are satisfying to use and each being useful in some way. Enemies that are challenging to fight and each also having it's specific role in shaping the gameplay. I mean, having the entire game be just hitscanners would suck, but if you have a nice mix of hitscanners, melee enemies, enemies with various kinds of projectiles and any other cool thing you can think of. Having tons of bullet spongy enemies sucks too. Movement is also important and it's nice to have some kinds of quirks and tricks to it, such as straferunning in Doom or grenade/rocket jumping and bunnyhopping in Quake. Dusk is an example of a modern retro styled fps which uses movement and many other mentioned things really well, but that's all just my opinion.

Map design first. Interconnected map design with memorable locations and landmarks are a MUST for a good FPS, especially if it wants to stay in people's minds.
Then weapon and enemy design. One has to compliment another and shooting second with the first must be a fun experience.
Challenge is not very important. After all, original Doom is not very challenging at all even on the top difficulty, yet it's still fun and good. Decent challenge is welcome, but not required. However it is easy to overdo on the challenge part and make things frustrating and unfun.
