Can anyone name a game which “nailed it” (excuse the meme) in terms of artistic direction and general cultural demonstration of the very late 90s as Ridge Racer Type 4?

The game takes place over the course of 1999 and ends literally with fireworks as the clock ticks over into 2000 right as your final race finishes, complete with “Happy New Year’ appearing on the big screen as you drive beneath it. It sums up how optimistic for the future the world was at that time.

Every part of the game is deliberately designed to contribute to a unique aesthetic. The soundtrack, the course design, the all-encompassing glowing canary yellow colour, even the font - something you will never see again because it won’t pass accessibility checks.

In a time where Gran Turismo had just changed the rules completely, R4 could very easily have tried to copy it with its excel spreadsheet, enthusiast approach to ‘driving simulation’, but instead they had the balls to stick with the arcade format and just do everything else better.

People talk about its simplicity in terms of actual gameplay letting it down (and how short it is), and they have a point, but I think it was a trade off the developers were aware of and weren’t too bothered about.

Everything about the game is geared towards a chill, effortless superiority. If you want to throw controllers at the screen in frustration, go play Need For Speed.

I really really dislike how drift type cars handle in that game. It's not that it's 2hard for me, the physics are just bad compared to other drift racers such as daytona usa or gran turismo.

It was also a game from a period where the concept of a ‘virtual character’ to symbolise the brand was common-ish. Celeb endorsements and general higher profile of the platform means that’s not really a thing anymore.

Another thing which I don’t see get talked about much when discussing the game is how, for a racing game at least - a genre typically about cars first and foremost - it throws so many *people* at you.

Every boot up of the game starts off with a FMV intro, complete with introductory names of the various fictional people you’ll become familiar with. The team managers talking to you before and after every race. The (albeit rather corny) ‘plot’, which doesn’t become fully apparent until you play with all four teams. The girls who pose in front of your car before the race starts. The announcer talking directly to you throughout the race!

For those who acknowledge that there is a certain feel to the game that isn’t present in other racers - that is what it is you’re feeling.

To follow up, it’s a racing game where the cars themselves, the part of the game you’d consider normally the most important part of a racing game, take a back seat to the characters and the courses themselves. It really was a ballsy move.

Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio too, probably. A lot of SEGA's late 90s / early 2K production feel that way. I have always thought that the Dreamcast era felt very fresh and optimistic probably because SEGA was trying to left behind past failures and start over with fresh and new energy. You can see the change from the colorful and optimistic Sonic Adventure to Sonic Adventure 2 more "doomed" atmosphere (although still was very SEGA-like). They new the end was near.

Unfortunately Ridge Racer only exists now to be launch title fodder for new Sony systems. A recognisable brand to give people a reason to buy the product. See: PSP, PS3, Vita. Shame, really.

A new RR in the style of R4 (not exactly the same, R4 was a product of its time and it's pointless trying to replicate it exactly) would be very welcome I think. There's a gap in the market for a proper arcade racer that isn't 'street edgy' or cartoonish.

Get it right and it would be amazing. No over the top TURBOBOOST LMAO bullshit, just the same chilled out feel but making use of some more recent 21stC ideas.

I would say RR5 is actually a better game than 4. 6 and 7 are also excellent games.
The irony is RR4 in many ways killed the series. It changed the game from a tight arcade experience into a dull prolonged skinner box with endless low difficulty races to unlock Gran Turismo style barely better cars. This was a killer combination for most consumers especially once coupled with the incredible presentation.
RR5 in contrast is an ugly game even by PS2 standards with atrocious presentation. It removed all the skinner box junk. It was a pretty pure game, so tanked.
After this arcade racers were in decline anyway and the later games were mostly just ignored as being unfashionable even though were exciting as hell and even worked very well as multiplayer games.
RIP Ridge Racer.

There's a reason for this. After Ridge Racer went out of fashion and the Burnout games became the most popular arcade racer series, in desperation Namco outsourced RR to the western developers of Flatout to try and make a copycat RR game hinged around car crashes like Burnout.
