SNES soundchip is crippled by the 64K memory, but it's actually a great chip for TurboGrafx-16-style chiptunes. It's a pity everybody insisted on muffled "realistic" style instead of playing to its strengths.

Let's see, the YM2612 has:
>six 4-op FM channels
>one of the FM channels can be used for software-controlled 8-bit PCM instead
>9-bit stereo DAC
If we're generous and configure it like the Genesis with its PSG, that adds:
>three square wave channels
>one noise channel

Meanwhile, the YM2608 has:
>six 4-op FM channels
>three square wave channels
>one noise channel
>one dedicated 8-bit ADPCM channel
>six ADPCM sampled rhythm channels
>16-bit stereo DAC

The YM2608 is literally better in every way.

>> No.6490074

>>6489964
Aren't those 6 ADPCM rhythm channels non programmable, meaning they're stuck with a pre-defined set of sounds? If so, I think I'll take the YM2610 over both of them. It may not have as many fm channels (until a later model, or so I heard), but at least its adpcm channels are programmable, despite 6 of them being locked to 18.5khz. It's just too bad most companies that used it, like SNK, didn't really utilize the FM and SSG part of the chip, often over relying on the ADPCM side.

>> No.6490117

For me, it's the YM2151

>> No.6490137

>>6490074
The YM2610's ADPCM channels are basically the same as the YM2608's, except the rhythm samples are read from an external ROM instead of the built-in one. Which is nice, but being fixed-pitch limits their usefulness somewhat.

Easy. I would use the C64's SID as basis and gimp it to no end. Heck, the original design for the chip was pretty out there, but sadly was toned down quite significantly. So yeah, I'm not a fan of FM synthesis sound chips at all.
>Emphasis during chip design was on high-precision frequency control, and the SID was originally designed to have 32 independent voices, sharing a common oscillator.
>However, these features could not be finished in time, so instead the mask work for a certain working oscillator was simply replicated three times across the chip's surface, creating three voices each with its own oscillator. Another feature that was not incorporated in the final design was a frequency look-up table for the most common musical notes, a feature that was dropped because of space limitations.
>The support for an audio input pin was a feature Yannes added without asking, which in theory would have allowed the chip to be used as a simple effect processor. The masks were produced in 7-micrometer technology to gain a high yield; the state of the art at the time was 6-micrometer technologies.

Easy. I would use the C64's SID as basis and expand it to no end. Heck, the original design for the chip was pretty out there, but sadly was toned down quite significantly (I would even call it crippled, yet still it was one of the best sound chips of the time). So yeah, I'm not a fan of FM synthesis sound chips at all.

>>6490462
Designing a sound chip isn't that difficult. I've reproduced many using CPLDs and even modified a few. Any spec would depend entirely on what it was going to be used for. You're probably not going to stick a chip that needs a powerful controller and megs of RAM in a 2600. Although you might bundle all that stuff into a single package. Something like MSU1 except not retarded.

That's probably because they didn't have space to fit the samples if they were to make all the songs on the SNES port sound similar to how they are on the Genesis.
