Why are these games so criminally underrated?

They are some of the most atmospheric games in existence.

The controls are fine, they're closer to a 3D version of Prince of Persia or Flashback in that if you jump, you will jump the exact same distance every time and there's nothing you can do about it, unlike Metroid or Sonic where you can easily control yourself in the air.

>> No.6474101

I never said they where bad, I said they aged poorly. Same with golden eye, great games at the time but nothing a lot of people wanna go back to or start again to learn. People want to pick up a game and have it play the same way other games play, they dont want to learn awkward controls from the past.

Tomb Raider was never an action game, it is an exploration game. It's basically Resident Evil with jumping and 3 dimensions added to it. Complaining that moving isn't fast and efficient in an exploration game is retarded. It was never supposed to be Sonic and you were supposed to explore slowly.

PC versions can be better, but all of them need some fiddling and patching, though there's an anon that delivers pre patched download links every TR thread. Sega really shot themselves in the foot getting a deal to release it on Saturn first as the PS1 version clearly had an extra layer of polish and isn't just better for technical reasons.

Being a UK developed game the PAL Saturn version was released first, is an even earlier build, and is even worse for it. There's at least one spot with swinging axes that's supposed to have a save crystal, but it's missing entirely in the PAL version meaning if you make a mistake it's a good 5 minute run to get back to the same point.
The lighting is too dark in places and the low-res textures for distant walls are a mess, but at least the 6 button controller works better overall.

Tips for newfags, since a friend asked to throw a dog a bone:
Using right side of the keyboard, while at first unintuitive, leads to superior experience. Otherwise you will have to switch between "natural" left Ctrl and Shift... and pretty much all other controls, which are located on the right side under various, obtuse from modern perspective keys
If the game has it, do Croft Manor first. Otherwise, you are going to get confused.
If you never, ever had any contact with the series, do TR1 first, then any order goes.
If you had any kind of exposure, even to nu-Raider, start from TR3 for easier accomodation, then do them chronologically.
If you can't figure out a solution within 5 minutes, you aren't stuck yet. If you can't figure out a solution within 30 minutes, you are stuck. It's this kind of experience.
The controls might feel odd, even if you aren't a zoom-shit, but all it takes is to finish Croft Manor's obstacle course and you have mastered it all.
Stella's site is currently the best collection of helpful resources and tips, short from watching someone play it for you. Just google Stella TR.
Avoid the "official" site, Tomb Raider Chronicles, like hellfire, they've got butt-fucked by corporate suits into total compliance on "nu-Raider is all that matters", with tonnes of old material being cut or relegated to defunct pages.

>> No.6475878

Oh, and one more:
It is advised in TR3 to do Nevada first, or at least prior of doing South Pacific. There is no "true" sequence even if the documentation from production suggests London-Nevada-South Pacific as "how the plot unfolds", but it is still helpful to pick Nevada as early as possible.

Miss them too. Miss their obsession over interviews, so everyone knew what anyone in the team said about just about anything game-related. And they were essentially a Core-only site, croaking right before Legend hit stores. Real shame.

you have to remember that tomb raider is a game from 1996 primarily made for the saturn, which didn't have analog sticks
absolute 3d movement with a dpad is not that good, and it makes it difficult to line yourself up with things, which is a big problem in puzzle games where you must interact with various things like objects on the ground or levers/switches

nowadays you would expect such a game to use absolute controls with an analog stick, but that had not yet become the standard. later games switched to it

i don't know about younger players who didn't play any of these kinds of games, but i personally have no problem going back to 'tank controls'

Nothing lasts forever but it started a certain way and carried on for quite a while. TR is pretty old news at this point but Lara was the borderline face of video games in her heyday, the fervor isn't what it used to be like you said since the ardent fans age and literally die but what's left stays pretty well in line with the old.

games age in the sense that technology, controls, expectations, etc, etc move on, while the game stays the same

If anyone's on a high horse, it's you. I can't police how you choose to conduct yourself, but:

1) The guy who asked for a repost made it clear he wasn't asking the original poster of those files (I assume that's (You), as both he and you made it clear you have no interest in reposting). He politely asked if another anon would help him out.

2) Stating that the country is blocking the site is both technically and demonstrably wrong, and there are any number of articles about the Zippyshare issue that back this up.

You don't care if folks can't get the files. That's fine, but you could just have said nothing instead of being rude. If you cop an attitude when someone calls you out or asks someone else for help, it's you that has the problem.

And I will repeat it for the n-th time:
None of this is my problem nor do I care. I deliver and I deliver using zippy. I re-uploaded it three times before it "took" for a single upload to persist since November last year and I'm not gonna re-upload it until the links are alive. And when that happens, I'm going to use zippyshare once more, because that's my upload place of choice when it's to be send to more people than just other Poles (for which I would use native uploader, which is only in Polish and requires registration).
I probably COULD consider using other sites, but ever since the bitching about zippy started, it was exactly that: demands and bitching. Not asking, not informing about issues, but "reupload it on X, NOW".
Fuck that. Like I've repeated so many times - when someone has the sheer audacity to complain about a free gift and then get angry about it, they don't deserve anything. Most definitely not to fulfill their demand.
People should know how to behave, rather than being entitled cunts. Me having to explain it - and routinely so - is yet another nail to the coffin of me not using anything else than zippy, especially since the November upload still holds.

Although I think I would've chosen not to engage with them, because frankly life is too short to have my blood pressure raised by people being uncivil on the internet - if I slapped people down every time I saw that, I'd have no time for work or sleep. That said, I'm sorry that you've had that, and that you've taken it to heart.

It's your perogative not to want to use another site or mirror the files, but the simple solution was always this: let someone else do it. Remember, this is 4chan - use your anonymity. If you take every troll, whiner and idiot to heart, you'll quickly end up on blood pressure meds. Do your bit, and if it stops fun, think about your sanity before staying in the thread. (Just a word of advice from someone who's been there)

So between you and >>6492607 all it took was one guy asking politely and a bit of bickering for the problem to be solved. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm grateful that you still took the time to post (especially when you could, quite literally, have taken your toys and gone home) and that he took the time to reupload.

So - forget the whiners and let's have a better thread next time, and let's remember that we're all fans together. Politeness and cooperation cost nothing and mean we don't shit up threads calling each other out, throwing around words like "zoomer", or winding ourselves up over others' posts.

But I don't mind at all anyone else doing it. Quite the contrary - I repeat like a mantra from the start that if people want to use other site, they can simply do it themselves. I'm always just pointing out I'm not going to do it myself, because I did my share (quite literal one) already and the other sites didn't last even a week before deletion.

I guess the Steam version has some compatibility issues that are supposedly fixed in that release, like some musical bugs or widescreen support.
Also, the versions provided are Gold versions, with all the available expansions. Steam only has base games available so if you wish to play let's say The Last Artifact, you are shit out of luck.
