Does the Game Gear have enough good exclusives to justify something like this? The only two I know of are the Shinobi games, which are underappreciated and fantastic. I'm not being dismissive, just genuinely curious. Most of the G.G. games I know are Master System ports or middling retreads of Genesis games.

The nose is still there, it's just less prominent. I'll take better looking eyes over a more prominent nose. Also, Sonic's shoes just look better on GG, you can't deny the tone of red used on SMS is drab, while on GG, it's the classic vibrant red color trademark of Sonic's shoes. The pose is also better, something about the position of Sonic's legs on SMS doesn't look right. With just more details in the color shading, more vibrant colors, and proper looking eyes, it just looks better than the SMS one and the prominent nose doesn't make up for all it's lacking.

Untrue. The 1st boss is not hard in either version and the only thing SMS adds is more waiting. If anything, it seems they overlooked the Y axis on Robotnik's spawning on SMS, because in all Sonic games, you can always reach Robotnik by jumping from the ground, especially the 1st zone bosses.

It's the first thing one notices upon seeing that sprite, it's jarring and it's the reason there are fan mods at all. It also makes the eyes look weird.
In the Game Gear version you can't even see the path to the emeralds most of the time such as the platforms and log on Jungle and the platform in Sky Base. I played the GG version first and the MS version was a sight for sore eyes when I finally tried it. GG is playable sure, but MS is much more enjoyable to look and play imo.
And there's no denying the Master System bosses are harder, apart from Labyrinth. They might not be too hard, but they're harder.

Arguable, bigger resolution but with worse colors and less details. I think the game is properly designed for the GG screen, I don't see any problem or any need to settle for a version with less detail and colors, which would be the case for Sonic 2.

This is also arguable. The final boss that was brought up earlier has a homing light bolt, not homing function on SMS. And spawning fire from the floor makes it slightly harder than an electric wall that never changes its trajectory. Still braindead easy on both versions so really, even if the bosses were actually harder, which I don't think they are, I still wouldn't settle for such small differences in exchange of less of everything else.
I dunno, I can totally understand trashing on Sonic 2 GG, by all means play it on SMS. Sonic 1 however? It's evident GG is the one version to play. SMS is fine too and has the advantage of bigger resolution, but again, not always used correctly, to the point of certain parts actually playing better on GG, and less of everything. It's clear.

I love the GG's LCD screen, the colors are noticeable in it. Also it's not just colors but more detail as well (animated flowers, more background graphics).
It's fine if you personally don't like the GG, but it's still hard for me to concede it to SMS when GG has a number of things in its favor, bigger than SMS's.

you can fucking pause the game on game gear without having to get up and press a button on the console (which might also corrupt the game if you accidentally move it). I'll take any Game Gear version any day just because of it.
