6478731 No.6478731 [Reply] [Original]

Recently picked up a vectrex in full working order! The only downside is the CRT has come loose out of its frame, thinking about opening into up to try and sort that out, but am worried about CRT discharge. Any help/advice on how to not electrocute myself? Ever played any Vectrex games? General thoughts and opinions on the console ?

don't plug it in, and switch it on when you plan to touch anything close to the anode cap. Other than that, some thick rubber dish gloves aught to be enough to keep you safe.
>Ever played any Vectrex games?
Tons. Got my hands on a Vextreme cart. It's still in it's infancy so many games dont work, but considering the tons of homebrew games there are, you can play on it for quite a while. I got a good kick out of Berzerk arena.
> General thoughts and opinions on the console ?
I genuinely think there would have been a follow up console had the market not crashed immediately after they pushed it to market. That and if they had gotten some stronger game developement. The original games are great, but the homebrew scene has shown me there's so much more to it.

I'm gonna share my library of vectrex roms with you guys because it's a pain in the ass finding all the homebrews I've found. I'm 100% sure this isn't even all of them. Some are locked behind paywalls (still), and others are dumped source codes, but I have no idea how to compile a source code into a vectrex bin file.
Anyway, if any of you guys happen to have a game bin that I don't, please let me know and share it.
Here's the link to what I got. Enjoy.

It was going to be all three at one point.
There's a vectrex table top arcade cab.
It was primarily sold as a console.
Finally, one of the few peripherals they were gearing to push out before the whole project was scrapped was a keyboard adaptation for use with an 8 bit computer conversion kit that literally every console was doing back then. http://vectrex.playntradeonline.com/access.html

Little thing I forgot to mention. I know I'm missing a bunch of tiny little "demos" of music and maybe animation. They're intentionally not in my library because the vextreme only has a limited amount of space built into it. I'm just trying to say that I'm aware of those. I make exceptions for fun little tools like the vectrex clock, instruments, or whatever.

I had a Vectrex and a bunch of games, sold it a long time ago at a garage sale. If you're going to open it up, watch out for this thing. Anode cap, can hold high voltage in there for months after being powered off.

I admit don't actually know anything at all about how the Vectrex works, I just remember reading here that the thing is noisy because there's no shielding between the cathode ray tube and the speakers.
Is that what's actually going on, and if so, could no such thing be improvised? Is there not enough space, or is there some other technical reason you can't do something like that?

Because vector graphics fucking suck for anything but really simple old arcade games. You can't really do games like Quake, Super Mario 64, or Heroes Of Might & Magic 3, with only solid monochromes and no kind of texturing or shading, it'll turn into a hideous eye raping mess.

Pixel Masterrace.

BS. 32 brightness levels.

However, the 6809 microprocessor can't do a lot of work

I'm trying to resurrect also my own Homebrew game I started way back in 91 I believe. I always love star readers for the Atari 8-bit computer line and I always thought this would have been a dynamite port for the vectrex, so I started coding one using a cross compiler at an old Osborne computer which used a 6809 CPU. I was going to make it so that you had to turn the vectrex on its side to get a landscape but I determined this would be kind of foolish so all I did was just letterboxd it and one thing that was good about it is that old star Raiders would be poreus for the explosions of asteroids and enemy spacecraft because the processor would choke on the sudden three-dimensional data

However my best piece of memorabilia is the rare plug-in vectrex computer.

It uses a version of a 68000 CPU for Motorola but in my years of getting it working I ran into trouble is that it needs bubble memory of an obscure type. Luckily in talking with the restore at the Vintage computer Museum in Seattle it turns out that this was a version of memory that came later and he gave me a couple of known good modules to get it running. However there is though a static Rim problem and I'm not sure why that is but it looks like there is a damaged Trace somewhere in the board around one or two of the unsocket are chips so I'm going to at some point desolder them and put proper sockets in so it's easier to change them out
