I have played this game an untold amount of times since 1995, and have never once gotten one of the ultra rare drops. This is the only RPG that I regularly replay in which that has happened. For fuck sakes, I once got 3 dragon whips, a dragon lance and a crystal ring in a single play through of Final Fantasy IV, but these cock sucking Starmen won't give up their God forsaken sword even once.

The fuck's laser gun so important for? I found better weapons ages ago, yet I'm not allowed to sell or drop this little bastard.

You'll be using Starstorm or PK Freeze when you want to deal damage with Poo anyway, so it's a non-issue.

SoK is highly missable because the Starmen stop spawning once you defeat Starman DX, so you have to grind before getting to him.
I grinded for it on my playthrough on GBA, I wanted a 100% file with all the rare item drops. Getting the SoK didn't get that long because Starmen spawn all the time, so you can keep trying again and again very quickly.
The hardest/most time-consuming ones to get were the Magic Frypan on the lost underworld, which are only dropped by Chomposaurs, and the Gutsy Bat, which are only dropped by Bio Kraken on the last section of the game. But I got them too, after countless hours of grinding with the GBA on the bathroom, I tried several minutes everyday until it happened.
Funnily enough, I got the SoK randomly, without even thinking about it, in one of my playthroughs on SFC.
But yeah none of the rare drops are mandatory at all, they're just nice extra weapons. The magic frypan isn't even Paula's best weapon in terms of offense, although I think it has some advantages when it comes to PSI attacks, I think it boosted Paula's PP cap or something.

The Starmen are just randomly patrolling the area. They appear and disappear, so there's a chance Ness and co. could sneak one from behind.

To be fair isn't the whole idea that Giygas isn't really a sentient being with a plan by the time Earthbound takes place? That was Mother 1/Beginnings, here he's moreso just devolved into a pure embodiment of hate and evil that just wants to aimlessly destroy if I remember correctly

Probably inspired by The Sirens of Titan (a confirmed Itoi inspiration for the Mother series), Gyiyg was fucked by using time-travel, much like how Rumfoord on Sirens of Titans was a sort of eternal entity that was in various points in time at the same time, but was no longer a normal living creature, and more like a phantom.
