>Programmer and designer Chris Oberth had a long, diverse career in the video game industry before he passed away in 2012. I think for most of us, the definitive Chris Oberth game was Anteater, the arcade title he designed and engineered during his time at Stern (or perhaps you know the clone that Chris himself wrote for home computers – Ardy the Aardvark – or the one he didn’t – Oil’s Well). For others, it might be Winter Games for the Commodore 64, or perhaps his later arcade work at Incredible Technologies like Time Killers or World Class Bowling, or the handful of titles he developed on his Apple II in the late 70s and early 80s (on an Apple II with serial number 201, as he liked to brag).

It was in the latter that Chris briefly mentioned an unreleased NES game – an unpublished version of Days of Thunder done for Mindscape (a separate attempt done by Beam Software was ultimately published in its place).

In August-September 2017, he was given the cart by one of the guys who bought to dump and distribute it on the Internet. In December 2018, he released it in an article on his insecurely-named new website.

>With permission from Chris Oberth’s family, we will be publishing buildable source code on GitHub in the near future. In the mean time, a group of retro game enthusiasts has put together a small print run of Days of Thunder cartridges, compatible with the Nintendo Entertainment System, as a fundraiser for Oberth’s widow. It is available here.

The shop owner who purchased the prototypes was negotiating to sell to the highest bidders in Portland during the expo. Frank convinced Steve Lin to step in and buy one of them, so that it could be dumped.

This. I think the folks involved are well intentioned but when you are in this hobby long enough, you gradually turn full autismo and lose sense of what's actually significant. People deep in the scene may view this as some incredible Indiana Jones stunt and great public service, but it will ultimately become virtually inconsequential. Outside of prototypes of culturally significant games, I think archiving lost games is not a resourceful use of time.

Frank compares the importance of his work to lost film recovery but that's an unfair comparison. Just about every game that was released and had any measurable impact on our world has already been archived. Compare that to films where 90% of silent films are lost. These are movies that were widely seen and reviewed. The remaining lost games are unfinished projects like this that may have only been seen by a handful of people, like trying to recover home movies from a stranger's basement.

not really, film can be pretty worthless itself

but its still historical which is itself worth something

sort of

>> No.6489368

It depends on what kind of game or movie it is. Personally I think the recovery of Acuario of the Clockwork is more significant than whatever this was supposed to be.

I have to agree with the other anon. It's not like there are people digging through the basements of dead directors from the 40's hoping to find the assembly cut of some lame ass garbage he couldn't get released and no one wanted to see. They generally go after movies that were at least finished and released at some point in the past

What this situation is, is some weirdo literally finding a bunch of raw data in a dead programmers basement. Code for a shitty game that wasn't released and nobody wanted. It's totally worthless.

I mean, it's not like they found the original FFIV for NES, or Super Mario FX or something.

Preservation has a place and it's own variety of importance, but this has nothing to do with that.

Also, looking at other media; let's say you found reels of 2 inch tape in Elvis Presley's basement containing hours of unfinished, unmastered demos of unreleased songs. Well that would have great significance, because its fucking elvis.

Or let's say you find a personal notebook that belonged to JRR Tolkein detailing the plot outline of an unreleased LotR novel. Again, majorly significant because of the author.

This is just some code for a nothing game they found in a nobody's basement.
