Can we talk about Mario lore and how it changed over time? Not necessarily the "canon" lore from the manuals, but rather what could be inferred from the games themselves.

Mario is an Italian-American middle aged guy from Brooklyn. He keeps getting all sorts of weird jobs until one day he is hired by a demolition company (Wrecking Crew). This leads him to work on a construction site, when suddenly a huge gorilla escapes from the zoo and kidnaps Pauline, Mario's girlfriend who had come to see him. Mario saves her and gains the nickname of "jumpman". He eventually becomes a plumber to assist his brother Luigi, who is having trouble cleaning the sewers because there are strange turtles and other creatures coming out of the pipes. During this job, they find a magical pipe to the fantasy world the turtles came from. Mario wanders this kingdom and learns of the princess' kidnapping, so he decides to save her with the help of magic mushrooms and flowers, having gained confidence in his skills after his past encounter with Donkey Kong.

SMB1 is arguably the only game that takes place entirely in the mushroom kingdom, which is divided in 8 small zones with a castle each, all built by Bowser. The environments include underground sewers, water zones, the tops of giant mushrooms, bridges, etc. This is the mushroom kingdom.

SMB2 Japan is a retelling of the original story. SMB2 USA is a dream.

SMB3 is arguably a play, but let's assume the events are real. World 1 appears to be the mushroom kingdom itself (the king is Peach's father, and the hills have eyes which is indicative of the mushroom kingdom). The other worlds are six neighboring kingdoms ruled by other kings. The last world is King Bowser's domain.

SMW takes place in the exotic Dinosaur Island, which appears to be part of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario Land 1 takes place in Sarasaland, a kingdom divided in 4 sub-kingdoms based on real-world locations, all ruled by Daisy. The royal castle itself (which we never see in the game) is in the Birabuto sub-kingdom, a desert land based on Egypt, which explains Daisy's skin color in her early appearances.

Mario Land 2 takes place in Mario's private island turned theme park, which Peach gifted him as a reward.

Mario 64 takes place in Peach's castle. The levels are not "real" places, but rather magical paintings that contain pocket universes. These painting worlds are mostly "frozen" in time and don't really progress or advance beyond what's depicted in the painting. Everything beyond the level borders is empty, since these universes have nothing in them except the parts shown on the painting. They might be based on real places from the mushroom kingdom that the artist preserved forever in his works, so they are probably stuck in the past and don't look like their current versions in the real world.

Mario Sunshine takes place in Isle Delfino.

Mario Galaxy takes place all over the universe, which collapses at the end. Mario's home galaxy is reborn as a weird fusion of different galaxies after the new big bang.

Mario Odyssey takes place in different kingdoms, like SMB3.

What do you think of the Yoshi Island and NSMB retcons?

Mario is no longer a normal guy who found a magical pipe to another world. He's now a baby born in the mushroom kingdom. And he's apparently Peach's age, rather than a middle aged guy. Lame. NSMB copied SMB3 without understanding it. The mushroom kingdom doesn't have its own identity anymore (SMB1 and World 1 of SMB3). Now it's a collection of different, clashing environments. It has a desert, an ice zone, a sky zone, a huge sea zone, etc. Those environments were never part of the mushroom kingdom, they were retcons. In SMB3, these tropey environemtns were straight up different kingdoms, while SMB1 made it very clear that the mushroom kingdom was a land of giant mushrooms and bridges, with no other environments in sight.

Also, I think it's pretty interesting how Wario took over the Land series.

He just popped into existence as a bizarre Mario doppelganger in Land 2, because why not. Then he took over his private island/theme park, making it his own and brainwashing all the workers with dark magic.

In Wario Land 1, he tries to steal a golden statue of Princess Peach, but a bunch of pirates steal it first. He fights the pirates and gets the statue, but Mario comes up and steals it back. Wario is left with a magic lamp that belonged to the pirate leader, so he uses it to wish for a castle of his own.

In Wario Land 2, it's suggested that he used the other two wishes to wish for immortality and tons of treasure to put inside his castle. He has some more adventures here.

In Wario Land 3, he finds a magical music box that traps him inside. Looking for a way out, he is forced to help a mysterious figure that promises to let him out keeping any treasure he finds. The figure turns out to be an evil clown that turned the inhabitants into monsters. Before the final battle, he CANCELS Wario's immortality to make a game over possible. In the end Wario wins, but he's no longer immortal after the ending.

In Wario Land 4, a now mortal Wario lives in the city and owns a car (even a badass like him shouldn't live in the middle of the forest after becoming mortal again, it's kinda dangerous). He explores a pyramid and accidentally unleashes an ancient curse and shit. He ends up helping the ghost of the princess that used to live there in the distant past. During the pyramid adventure, he learns of some sick minigames and this gives him some ideas. This is the birth of Wario Ware.

I guess so, but I don't like retcons made decades after the fact, so I don't really count that as canon. Especially coming from a game influenced by Miyamoto's obsession with removing any sort of interesting lore or story whatsoever.

I get that gameplay is the most important part, and I get that Miyamoto is afraid of Mario turning into a Sonic-tier cringefest if his games have any sort of "story". But going so far in the opposite direction is stupid and makes the games feel soulless/lacking in atmosphere.

Mario doesn't need complex lore or a proper story, but one of the reason his games are so charming and fun (beyond the gameplay itself) is the character of Mario and the strange world he inhabits. Intentionally making Mario boring instead of embracing the Brooklyn thing, intentionally making all the stories exactly the same because "it doesn't need a story", intentionally making all the environments bland and repetitive, etc. It's harmful to our enjoyment of the games, no matter how good the gameplay is.

How do you feel about Mario's voice? Martined did as stellar job on Mario 64, his voice is fucking iconic. But at the same time, I unironically liked his portrayal before that, with the cartoon voice and Lou Albano playing him. That gruff voice seems weird now, but it's strangely fun to listen to. Maybe it's because I associate it with MAMA LUIGI and other memes.

Speaking of Luigi, does anyone else dislike how flanderized he has become? He used to have a different personality in the old days. Hell, during Waluigi's first appearance in Mario Tennis Luigi straight up tells him he's not afraid. I feel that since Luigi's mansion the character has been turned into a pussy that is afraid of fucking everything. It's not that bad, but it feels overdone these days. I miss old Luigi.

I also don't like the fact that Yoshi is in the game. They use the ugly ass perfect-sphere-for-a-nose Yoshi model, which is terrible. And they make Mario ride him, which looks really bad because nu-Yoshi's design doesn't work as a mount at all.

I feel the next 2d Mario will have to... switch things up a bit. Why have the same few environments (grass, desert, jungle, ice, sky, lava etc) over and over and over again? It's been done to death. Go crazy! What about a factory level with conveyor belts and robots? A shiny neon pinball level? A spaceship level? A circus with trapezes and trampolines? A lush garden with exotic plants? Rainbow road? There are literally infinite possibilities. I don't care if there are less levels. Make them unique and crazy! I don't care if the platforming is a liiitle less tight. And the artstyle. Give it a revamp. Maybe something cell shaded, or watercolor looking. Or a cartoony style like the original boxarts. Make it distinct and unique.

Compared to games like Galaxy or 64, they just feel so... safe and unambitious. Not only that, but they also suffer from this soulless, lifeless, plastic toy aesthetic that just makes them uncomfortable to look at for a long period of time. It makes the world that Mario in-habits feel cold, and sterile.

To nintendo, mario always was just the videogame guy, who could take on any role and job as each game demanded, remember he was also referee for various sports and had some more jobs in the Game & Watch devices. In the end he was cast as an unlikely fantasy hero in a typical story about a princess and an evil king (SMB1 has the same plot as the first Dragon Quest, in a way) and that's what stuck.

Not really lore but something that always bothered me.

In SMB3, the koopalings have wands because they were stolen from each kingdom's king. In SMW they fight without them since the kings are not present in that game nor do they fight with magic. In other spinoff appearances they do not have wands as well.

In NSMBWii, the koopalings suddenly fight with the same wands from SMB3 for no actual reason. They just have wands now. I don't know why but this always tickled my 'tism.

I don't think I ever saw him as a middle-aged guy, but I agree with you on everything else. The western Mario lore was infinitely more interesting than the post-Yoshi's Island lore, even though as a kid I appreciated that Yoshi's Island served as an origin story for Mario. Also, we tend to think of it as western lore, but the idea of Mario and Luigi being two regular joes who get transported to a magical kingdom dates back to the 1986 anime movie, which I believe was made with input from Nintendo themselves. So you could say it was originally canon, more or less, until Miyamoto and Tezuka took a big shit on it with Yoshi's Island.

Wario will always be my favorite Nintendo character. His games are fantastic (the first one less so), the guy is a complete badass and the worlds he visits are really bizarre. Despite all the crazy shit that happens, the endings are always really melancholy and touching, I kid you not. And the soundtracks always have one or two really beautiful songs. Especially from 4 onwards, when they get lyrics. Palm Tree Paradise theme, the taxi song from Wario Ware 1, Tomorrow Hill from Wario Ware GC, etc. Really beautiful music. And who can forget the "EXCELLENT" song from Wario Land 3?

I had a great time with Wario Land 3 and 4 as a kid. His Wario Land 3 sprite in particular, with that white outfit, made him really likeable for some reason. Maybe it's the facial expressions, but I really felt for the guy and was glad when he obtained all the treasures at the end.

Too bad the character is a fart joke now thanks to Smash. They even made him shorter than Mario, what the fuck, he used to be twice his size.

Well you know, magic is funny like that. Some people are born magically gifted, and magic is intertwined with everything that they do. These are the people we call witches, sorcerers, etc. Magic is something that they -are-, not just a power they possess.

And then some people come upon magic powers by happenstance, they pick it up when they need something that can't be obtained by other means, then they put it down when they're satisfied. Or perhaps the powers leave them, to assist some other person in need.

>> No.6483070

My favorite part of SMB3 were always the underground levels, like 1-5. The aesthetic made my imagination fly. The way the floor looked like snow/ice (which made me interpret the buzzy beetles as penguins as a kid), and the background looked like SPACE and was full of stars. It was so intriguing. Obviously none of this was intentional, they probably intended to portray a generic dark cave. But the way it looked made it feel magical. Every time you went underground, it felt like you were on a snowy planetoid in the middle of space, in some sort of pocket dimension contained within the pipe. The pyramid levels made the "snow" red, giving everything an even more alien look. You entered a door into the pyramid and everything inside was a parallel dimension that extended into the infinity of space. They even used some of the stars to hint at invisible blocks!

I hate how the All-Stars version ruined the overall aesthetic of the game, especially the underground parts. They replaced that magical aesthetic with a generic cave look. They didn't even bother to replace the shiny stars with anything else, so now there isn't even a hint to the invisible blocks.

>> No.6483080

>>6483070
Maybe it was intentional, though. The remake removed most of the elements that made the game look like a play, so maybe this was one of the things they removed.

I remember some levels where hitting a block would let you see the stars behind it for a split second, making it look like the background of the level was hiding the space behind it, and they just didn't bother to hide the holes behind the blocks that let you see what's behind the background. So in that sense, the underground levels didn't have a background and so Mario could see space without any deceptions. Maybe the entire game took place in the middle of space and the backgrounds on the levels above ground hid that, creating an illusion of a normal world.

We decided we to try and make it interactive, something you could play with as in the rest of the game. As a title screen, if people feel it’s a little empty or lacking something, all I can say is “sorry!”

>—I also noticed that there seems to be a lot fewer enemy types than previous Mario games…?

>Miyamoto: There’s no special reason for that. (laughs) Normally we’d include about 80 different enemies, but this time we had just under 40. And many of them are neither friend nor foe, but something in-between. That was one of our themes for this development, actually.

>It’s kind of like, we didn’t want to just throw the player into this scary world and have them go on an adventure; rather, we wanted to make a game where the player would feel, “wow, what is this mysterious place I’ve come to…” So many of the characters might look like enemies at first-glance, but they actually aren’t hostile to you. The bunnies, the penguins, the snowmen…

I hate how Miyamoto apparently says SMB3 was just a play now (maybe this was bullshit from dumb fans?), because in SMW the airship Bowser used to escaped crashed in Dinosaur Land's ocean and became that weird ghost ship.

I liked how they incorporated Donkey Kong into Mario Odyssey though.

Mario Land 1 was based on ancient aliens theories (like Stargate ayylmaos invented egypt) which were popular in Japan. That's why the last boss is an alien. It shows up a lot in Japanese pop culture a lot, like Zelda BotW, but no one seems to acknowledge that SMB1 was based on it.

Peach is roughly 6 feet I think, probably a bit more. Imagine. Very tall, but not inhumanly. Mario’s ‘canon’ height at this point seems to be based off his Super form, with mini Mario being the size of a small child (I think this is very intentional, so kids can easily connect with the character).

It’s obviously changed since the NES when Super Mario was clearly taller than Peach and mini Mario was like a head shorter.

That’s the kind of thing that seems like a halfjoke. The whole Mario series picked up a motif of being a sort of show that’s put on by actors, it reminds me a lot of Osamu Tezuka’s star system.

Like you know the game isnt real, then there’s just another layer of there being a play. But the story within the play is still the ‘real’ story of Mario 3. If the series had a canon, that’s the story that would’ve been in it. I dont know how well I’m expressing this.

>>6483871
I missed the Land games growing up and when I finally played them I was surprised how major of a villain Wario used to be. Tatanga was supposed to be working for him the whole time wasnt he? Plus Wario has an army in Land 2. I just knew him as rivalguy from the spinoffs so I was surprised.

I like Bowser’s army fine but they need to freshen up the Mario villains catalogue so badly. Odyssey was a breath of fresh air for originality in general and a great game overall, but the series has a ways to go in order to recover its former glory. It’s shocking Mario of all things has become rather devoid of creativity (excepting Odyssey).

They never use those secondary characters who show up in every spinoff in mainline games for some reason.

DK, Wario, Daisy, those types almost seem barred from use...anyone who isnt the Mario Bros, Peach, a yoshi, a toad, or a koopa troop member is a huge shock to see. Look how strongly people reacted to just Pauline making a return. It’s weird how seldom they use their most popular characters outside of the spinoff shovelware.

I was thinking of that game as I wrote that post actually.

I agree it doesnt hold up next to the original but it’s really cool to have those three as playable characters, especially Wario. Even if he wasnt tons of fun in practice, it’s nice to be able to play as him.

Yoshi and Luigi come and go in the 3d games but its a shame that 64ds and wario world were the only times they tried with him and 3d.

I cant help but wonder what a 64/sunshine/odyssey type game with those four, peach, toad, dk and maybe a couple others would be like. It’s kind of shocking they havent done it yet.

Martinet is perfect for stuff like mario kart or the platformers where Mario never really speaks but just makes goofy yelps and such. For any role that involves actual speaking for a long period thay voice would get grating fast, and a more typical brooklyn plumber voice would be better. Thing is I cant see that sort of voice matching his 3D render they use for everything at all, cause it has such a baby face look to it. Would probably have to use a look closer to one of his old 2D designs if he had a gruff voice.

With Luigi the coward thing gets kinda old but besides the mansion game and mario & luigi games it doesnt really get brought up that much.

There's still a fair bit of aesthetic variation from game to game but it's a lot less exploratory than other series or even how Mario used to be. I can't imagine something like Super Mario Land 2 happening now, or even the sharp difference between SMB3 and SMW. It's a shame.

Can you elaborate on what made 3DW work for you?
I hated how it controlled, i always wanted full 360 control because i kept on jumping off of edges when i didnt mean to and i could barely aim my powerups, and the tiered running was a giant hassle. Granted this wasnt a relevant issue until the postgame, but it ruined the game for me because i just did not enjoy controlling Mario and taking full advantage of his moveset. Also all his alternative jumps were useless.
Oh, and in regards to levels, i thought the gimmicks were neat but they never felt fully expanded on to me. Each level expanded on its gimmick in the most basic of ways that it just felt boring. Also the final level made me want to kill myself because of how shitty the controls were, but people will just tell me to git gud probably, but man, Mario just feels too unnatural for me to get used to.
I really want to love this game man. Am i wrong for feeling this way, is there anything that im missing?

I always wondered why the Koopalings had different colors in-game in SMW, it was just recently that I realized that they're representing the 4 colors of the Super Famicom clover, red, blue, yellow and green.
Matches with the Yoshi, as well as the Switch palaces.
