Zombie Nation. You're either a samurai or tengu head depending on the version.

Adventures of Rad Gravity

Game is fascinatingly weird and very ambitious. Also has tons of exploitable weird glitches.

Athena. It's a bizarre, trashy port and it feels really weird and interesting, until you get tired of how awkward everything in it is. It's like the first TMNT game except it's genuinely glitchy instead of merely being rough. I've always liked it. I think there should have been more games like that, where the world is engaging yet mysterious and the paths to victory are obscure like in Milon's Secret Castle or Legacy of the Wizard, but they're obscure because of mistakes the developers made, not so much because they're supposed to be, so you're freed from having to actually figure them out in order to feel like you've properly experienced the game. I don't want to feel pressured to actually WIN a game like that.

Nobody ever seems to talk about NES Fantasy Zone here? I always liked that one.

Godzilla is another oddly rough game that I will never stop liking. It makes no sense and is kinda repetitive but it's also fun.

Iron Tank is sort of awesome I think? It's been a long time since I played it. Listen I'm going down the list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Family_Computer_games
(The NES games list page would be much more appropriate but I don't care enough to switch over to it. I'm just lazily ignoring all the Japan-only releases.)

Kung-Fu Heroes is yet another sloppy yet weirdly charming game. It has a lot of obscure rules and hidden stuff I think, but unlike some old highly Asian games that feature that kind of thing, it doesn't really push you to figure them all out. You can just blunder around exploding dudes with your fist or sword or whatever, and it will usually work. Not always, but usually.

Well whatever that's what I happened to randomly notice on that skimming. Only low-class games in this post... if you really wanted something excellent like Crystalis then you'd need to ask more specifically I guess. But then, excellent games tend not to be underappreciated.

Are we allowing Famicom? If so check out:
Adventure Island 4 (not as good as >>6478556 but still good)
Armadillo (platformer with interesting physics for the time)
Portopia Serial Murders (influential point and click, some pixel hunting at the mansion in the beginning but otherwise very good. There's a guide on lparchive)
Also your game has a randomizer that's a lot of fun

Shatterhand. An action platformer with tight controls and a banging soundtrack.

I heard about a PC Engine version of Crystalis in a magazine but I see no traces of it online. Any idea anyone?

Probably a mistake but you never know

Would be great if levels weren't so repetitive. Same thing as in Captain America and the Avengers, new levels you find are copy paste of the old ones

Try the Japanese version too if tou haven't already, it'e a bit different, plus 1 different level, idk which.
Also Choujin Sentai Jetman has a similar sound and feel to it. (Because also Natsume)

Pretty sure it recycles tons of code from Shatterhand, down to what one would call "an engine" these days.

Even back then I don't think it was too uncommon within a same company. For instance, TMNT on NES shares a LOT of similarities with Getsu Fuma Den, and then The Lone Ranger also does to a different extent except its action scrolling segments seem to be based on Castlevania

The Lone Ranger is an under-appreciated NES game btw

This is another one of those "sloppy" games. It's got a billion weapons and they generally look like programmer art and are balanced weirdly. The rooms are way too samey. You're a girlship and there are weird circle creatures that smile at you and help you. It's great. When I was a kid this was my official most favorite game for a while.

Little Samson

It's a meme game because people think it's just some super rare game and have never played it. It's actually a solid platformer and one of the best looking games on the NES. It plays like a modern game and doesn't have any bullshit hard moments that feel impossible. I played it on my Wii emulator using a SNES controller and it felt pretty awesome.

I know what you mean. Here's an example of a game like that, The NES release of Strider. It's development is a fascinating story. It started as a collaboration between Capcom and a manga producing company, the manga company would produce the story and characters, Capcom would make the videogame version of it. The Manga had six issues (three of which were ever translated into English,) and the game was never released for the Famicom. Instead, it was released for North American markets, likely due to the popularity of Strider's arcade version.

Why is it sloppy? Because it plays like a beta version, maybe even an alpha. There's horrible sprite flickering everywhere, glitchy game mechanics, placeholder art for the life and magic bars, erroneous hit detection, and more. The crazy thing is that despite all of this nonsense, it's still a lot of fun to play, and is worthy of a college try by any NES enthusiast.

Monster in my Pocket doesn't seem to get enough appreciation. It's a solid platformer with a banging OST. I think the movement could have been a little tighter especially the double jump. Other than that it's solid; even more fun with a friend.
