If it wasn't for SFII we would have to endure beltscrollers to the day arcades would die out anyway in favor of more powerful home consoles and PC's.
Thanks God they invented the fighting genre as we know it.

Daytona USA generated more revenue.

>"Sega had come up with such a "killer app" that no other game from them or any other company since has matched it in terms of profitability, leading to the phrase heard from most site operators, "It's no Daytona"."

When I worked in the help desk call center for a major ISP the tiny kitchen I would take my 30 minute lunch breaks in (actually more like 25 minutes including how long it took to talk to and from my desk since your pay would get docked if you were a second late logging back in even though the clock-in system was unreliable ad slow) had an upright Street Fighter 2 cabinet in it. Which I assume was the reason the suicide rate was so high there.

I came here to post this. SF2 was indeed a huge shot in the arm for arcades. I remember there were queues to play the fucking thing. OP is either baiting too hard or a LARPing zoomer.

What is the argument for this?
You have no idea how much arcades were drying up then and how much the idea of one-on-one fighters gave them a boost in popularity again.

The writing was on the wall the second the Sega Genesis released.

The performance gap between arcade and home console hardware was shrinking, and with it, the lure of the arcade.

>> No.6476994

SF2 kicked off the american arcades' last golden age that didn't really die until the very late 90s/early 00s. My local arcade made enough at the start of the era to expand into a much larger second property that didn't really fully fall off until the early-mid 00s, and didn't outright die for another decade after that, selling the property to a new outdoor entertainment district. What killed the scene here was that after the late 90s/early 00s nearly all of the new games priced out kids and some families' limited budgets. As a young adult in my early 20s I could afford an Initial D Stage 3 card and a quite a few rounds at a dollar a pop but for a kid that could be their entire allotment gone in minutes. When I was a kid 20-ish tokens could last me a few hours

SF2 didn't doom arcades. black "people" did. Sorry but it's the truth. Want proof? Look at how much longer Japan's arcades lasted compared to say Detroit's arcade scene. It's irrefutable.

The Dreamcast (Soul Calibur specifically) marked the moment when home gaming tech surpassed the arcade. But you're zoomers so I understand why you'd be confused.

>> No.6480826

>>6480801
The arcade version of Soul Calibur was released on a board that was based on PS1 hardware. Of course Namco was going to remaster it on the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast still couldn't faithfully handle Model 3 games from 1996. NAOMI ports faired better of course, but you could never say the Dreamcast versions surpassed the arcade versions.

>> No.6480836

>>6473350
Nah bro
You see, the idea of the arcade was fated to fail at some point
>My store-only videogame is vastly superior to your home system
>Pay me by the minute to play it

At some point the biggest depths of home system games would take the cake.
You could spend your allowance at the local arcade to try and beat other people's records or you could spend your next 12 free hours deeply engaged in a game that would take months of effort to get beaten
Try to think of the early MegaMan series in comparison to the top contender from arcades the same year, Contra.
Both are great representatives of their genres but MegaMan is way deeper.
