Is the most addicting game when it comes to killing enemies. Zelda pads the game with jars/bushes to break and buttons to press, and Diablo 2 gives you the loot. But SotN is just pure bloodshed, I don't think there is a game where killing enemies feels more mesmerizing than this one.

The one thing I don't like about AoS is that once the get the Claimh Solais, all the other weapons are worthless. Sure it's hidden, but once you know about it, it can be acquired rather early on, and from that point onwards the only other weapon worth using is Death's scythe to get those souls and that's only on Hard mode.

I also tend to focus on the luck inducing gear and souls to get drops more easily; and as a result, don't use most of the drops I actually get. This gets even worse in DoS, and having to grind 9 souls to max shit out doesn't help.

AoS is polished in the sense that it has competent game progression and good level design. SotN is a blast, but even if you beeline from boss to boss not collecting anything, every boss save for Shaft and Dracula can be easily killed with base stats and basic equipment. The graphics are pretty great too (for instance, Axe Knights look so much better than in SotN). SotN has pretty fantastic music, but most of the BGM in the inverted castle save for one or two are pretty bad; AoS doesn't have as good of a score, but it's more consistent. Also, dat Kenny G credits song

>>6467986
yes, you have to have one of a few different souls to get into the forbidden area and obtain it's weapons, but really that's not much different than, say, grinding for 'grim in SotN. I don't have a problem with needing 3 particular souls to get to the last area either, because it is a puzzle, and by end game it doesn't take long to get a soul if you are pushing for it (assuming you didn't just pick it up by chance anyway)

Then how comes the most fun thing about AoS' progression is to sequence break to reach the garden with double jump without using the walk-on-water-I'm-literally-jesus soul, thus skipping 2 areas altogether?

Sequence breaking to press the switch with the dagger on DoS is also one of the best things about it

Do you get a dodge at some point in this? I recently tried playing it and it felt ungodly stiff. I also didn't find the first few areas to be very good looking. I was actually surprised at how kind of ugly the game was.

Then I played Harmony of Dissonance and loved every second. I definitely think I enjoy the whip more than I do the different types of weapons. Aria of Sorrow felt even better at first, which was funny because I didn't really like what I played of Symphony, but then it just suddenly ended and I felt sour. I was expecting some kind of twist like "there are two castles!" and that I would have more to do. I won't grind souls, that's retarded.

bugs and sequence breaking are always fun because you are pushing the game in ways it wasn't designed to be played. one of the downsides of heavily produced games is they have you absolutely on rails (see metroid fusion), but the freedom of being able to break off those rails can really add something special (see super metroid)

>>6471891
colors and sounds were always difficult on the GBA. CotM was a launch title back when they didn't have backlights, and it's so dark that even in direct sunlight it can be difficult to play. They learned a lot from that game; HoD (which sucks) puts an outline around Juste, and AoS has colors that work both with and without a backlight. i agree though, being able to change palettes would have been a great option.
the sound is what it is. at least it's somewhat better if you have stereo headphones rather than the shitty mono speaker

>level design scale is completely off, that leads to needing double jumps everywhere, which on top of the double tap running which has no excuse for even existing considering how early on you get it, make navigation a chore
>this also leads everything looking XBOX HUBE and empty, and to enemies shooting at you from off the screen with no warning
>the only challenge comes from shitty enemy placement and the sheer number of enemies, like let's cram a fuckton of dumb enemies together
>the cross subweapon rapes everything in the game, it's designed to be more effective than in any other game, and on top of this the slow pacing of the game makes it even more OP than it should be
>no shop, pretty much no gear/card pick ups in the game save for one, so the ENTIRE game system is based on RANDOM DROPS
>if you play on luck mode to attenuate that, you need to complete the game 3 times in shitty gimmick modes first; then luck mode only makes the bad enemy placements even worse due to dying in so few hits

It's not underrated. It's pretty fucking well rated for what it is I would say.

It's pretty obvious that with HoD they tried to fix all the main flaws of CotM, to the point it leads to the opposite issues: random drops basically don't matter, their solution to fix off screen enemy shooting leads to un-spectacular bosses crammed in tight spaces like Dracula's 2nd form, and not just one subweapon is OP but tons of them.

I really just can't get over how terrible the difficulty curve is in this game, and how it relies on you to do some sort of challenge run to get any crumb of satisfaction out of it.
