Does anyone know of any hidden gem Military Themed games? While in Japan I stumbled across a very interesting title "Koutetsu No Kishi" or Knights of Steel in English. It's a really fun obscure tank strategy game set in WW2. I had a lot of fun playing it, it has a surprisingly high level of realism for being an SNES game.

Please reply with military retro vidya you felt didn't get recognition or that you enjoyed playing.

Panzer Front is a ridiculously realistic tank simulator for the PS1.

Has great graphics and lots of missions. You can even command other tanks to strategies as your not a one-man army.

Gunparade March. One of the most influential and impressive PS1 games ever made, yet unknown in the west due to its lack of a translation. It has continued to inspire developers to this day, with the recent 13 Sentinels having been a direct remaining of it, with the developers saying they wanted to make Gunparade March for the modern era.

It's too complex of a game to concisely describe, but consider it a war simulator in both the living aspect and the combat. It would take multiple full posts for me to even begin to describe what the gameplay is like, but consider it like 1/4th VN, 1/4th life sim, 1/4th RTS, 1/4th SRPG.

Fuck I know it's not Retro but right now I'm playing Decisive Campaigns. Might as well be retro given how it looks. It's an amazing game. My favorite aspect is how you can manage your entire Order of Battle from a chart just like you'd see in history books. A lot of people hate the interface but everything has a hotkey (which you can see by hovering over the controls) and if you learn the hotkeys it's actually alot faster to move units around than any other game I've played, but a lot of people who play these games are boomers, and boomers hate hotkeys.

Whatever you do stay way from Panzer General/Panzer Corp. That doesn't mean don't play them, but don't let that color your view of wargames. I played them back in the 90s and thought "this sucks. Wargaming sucks", but in reality those games are more like Puzzle games.

Unity of Command is a good starting game. It's also kind of like a puzzle game, but it has enemy lines and supply rules, which makes it much more like a traditional wargame. It's a real pain in the bitch ass to beat, but I think it covers eastern front combat pretty well. The Ultimate General games are also really good. It's basically like Total War except it's made to actually be a good strategy game instead of just to take screenshots.

From there, Decisive Campaigns. I really love these games. They are full operations during WW2 usually centered around the eastern front. They are somewhat complicated, but honestly if you hover over all the tooltips and do the tutorial you can figure out what's going on and how to do things. Each combat gives you an exact number of how many men you lost or retreated vs. the enemy, so it's really easy to get the hang of what tactics work and which ones dont. There's no magic numbers like in Panzer General.
