For years I thought the original Mortal Kombat movie was the best Video Game movie ever made. Sure there was Street Fighter The Movie and Super Mario Brothers The Movie, as much as I love both movies, Mortal Kombat was still above them.

Double Dragon, Resident Evil, Detective Pikachu all had a movie too, but they're not nearly as good except for maybe Detective Pikachu, but I'm not really into Pokemon.

Well just recently I managed to see Sonic The Hedgehog for the very first time on Blu-Ray. It's as fun as a comic book movie and it's certainly a more faithful video game adaption than the other video game movies that came before it.

The final battle scene between Sonic and Robotnik was very epic, I loved every moment of it. Why couldn't Super Mario Brothers be this exciting?

Don't get me wrong, I love that movie but it's nowhere close to perfect. It has some flaws. Whereas Sonic The Hedgehog was a thrill ride from start to finish.

I hope one day we could have a shared video game universe between Sonic and Mario. That's if Nintendo finally decides to reboot the Super Mario Brothers movie and make it as good as the Sonic movie. Maybe even use the same director for the Mario movie.

Anyways I give this movie an A+.

Definitely SMB for me.
I also like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter to varying degrees. Probably as a kid, MK was also my favorite one. I watched SMB in theatres back in 93 and while I thought some of it was cool, I was a bit weirded out by how different it was from the video game, although I did like how they adapted Mario's jumping mechanics by doing these moon jumping boots, or the scene when they both appear wearing the red and green outfits was pretty iconic, but it was later that I started appreciating the movie more for other reasons.
The dystopian dino-punk setting (which now I know, had work by the guy who actually worked on Blade Runner's scenography), all the practical effects, all the attention to detail, obscure references to the games that I didn't pick up back then (Toad as the guy on the street playing guitar, Spike being named after a rare enemy from SMB3 who only appears in 1 level). I also fucking love Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. Back when I was a kid, I was disappointed that Koopa wasn't an actual dino-turtle like in the games, and that the only appearance of him as a dino was at the very end for like 1 second, but now I enjoy the fuck out of every single second Dennis Koopa is on screen. It's like Frank from Blue Velvet got into the Mushroom Kingdom.
I also like the chemistry between Bob Hoskings and Leguizamo, even though they went on record saying it was their worst memory ever and yeah, we all know how disastrous the production of the movie was, but I still think they work pretty good together on the movie.
It's weird, but I like this movie more and more each time I re-watch it. I never find a single boring moment in it. It's like a mix of childhood nostalgia, and actually appreciating new things as an adult that I didn't pick up back then, which doesn't happen with MK or SF movies.
I still haven't watched the Sonic movie, but I want to, mostly for Jim.

I've seen Garfield, The Smurfs, Alvin & The Chipmunks, Detective Pikachu, none of them are as fun and entertaining as Sonic The Hedgehog. I think the reason for this is because 1) Jim Carrey. 2) It feels more like a comic book movie than a video game movie. 3) Sonic The Hedgehog is what the Super Mario Brothers movie should have been.

>> No.6466463

>>6466380
They made Koopa a human, for starters. I mean I understand they didn't have the budget to make him this huge monstrous reptile nor did they have the budget to make Mario gain power ups in the Mushroom kingdom, but if they had waited on making this movie until the CGI caught up, I think it definitely could have been video game accurate. I still like the movie for what it was, but it certainly doesn't resemble the game. Also Sonic has met humans from the real world before. Robotnik, the human citizens seen in Sonic Adventure and even a that one Princess from Sonic '06(I don't know or care for her name, since I never played that game).

>> No.6466502

>>6466463
I get what you mean, but this Sonic movie isn't really based in any of the Sonic video games either, it's a stand-alone buddy comedy movie, which happens to have Sonic in it (and Jim Carrey as Robotnik, which is great).
I feel Mario does more with the Mario lore, than Sonic movie does more with the Sonic lore. In Mario you see a fucked up version of the Mushroom Kingdom, you have the actual mushroom king (turned into actual fungus), and Koopa (stellar representation by Dennis Hopper) is not really a "human", he's an evolved tyranosaur. Which yes, it's not like the games, and it's batshit insane, but that's part of the charm of the movie.
I'm not arguing Mario is "like the video game" (although I do think it has more references to the games, than the Sonic movie does), but I'm saying, the Sonic movie isn't really "like the Sonic games" either, it's even further from the games than the Mario movie is.
You do have a point with non-retro shit like Sonic 06, but when I think Sonic, I mostly think the classic 2D Sonic. I want to see a modern movie that expands on the Sonic lore, or at least play around with it like the Mario movie did.
The Mushroom Hill at the end was interesting, it should have had more of that, instead of Sonic running around the real world. Maybe if they make a Sonic 2...
Also while humans might not be all that weird in Sonic, making one of the main protagonists a human is weird. It should have been Sonic and Tails, or just Sonic.

They could have made him with practical effects, no need for CGI. In fact, one of the reasons the Mario movie is so beloved now is because it's mostly practical effects and not CGI.
They could have made a monstruous reptile version of King Koopa, like they did with the Goombas and some other baddies, but they probably wanted to take advantage of the fact they had Dennis Hopper in the set. His antics are just much better with whatever SFX costume (or CGI) they could have come up with.

Also, regarding AOStH and Sonic SatAM, I'll just copy-paste something I wrote back in February (which also was on a thread about the Sonic movie lol):
It was kind of shitty, but at the same time it was so fucking cool to see Sonic as a cartoon on the TV.
I remember when my cable service finally got the channel that had the Sonic cartoons I went absolutely bananas. Admittedly, I was waiting for SatAM (which I knew because of a Sega VHS I had, that had the opening scene, I must have watched that a hundred times, the hype was off the roof). When AoStH came up on TV, I was weirded out and a bit turned off, since I expected the SatAM opening. But still watched it, and kept wondering what the fuck was up and why wasn't it SatAM. Eventually, I managed to catch SatAM too, which this cable channel also had, but didn't air as often as AoStH. In the end I ended up watching AoStH more, and barely have any memory of watching the actual SatAM cartoon.

Either way, I find AOStH way more enjoyable. Sonic SatAM took itself way too seriously.

There are two Metal Gear Solid motion comic animated movies that were included in The Legacy Collection for PS3.
These movies are really great adaptations of MGS1 and MGS2, and the comic book style that is also an imitation of Yoji Shinkawa's style is amazing, even if the actual animation is very limited.
It looks like the comic book cutscenes in Peace Walker.
I especially love the added scenes that were made for the comics.
The movie adaptations managed to compress the games into a two-hour long movie (for MGS1) and a three-hour long movie (for MGS2) while adding new scenes.

Even if you don't have a PS3, you can still watch the movies on any Blu-ray player and these movie adaptations alone make Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection worth buying even if you already own the games or don't own a PS3.

Anyways, the Sonic movie is in second place for me with the Metal Gear Solid movies tying in at first place.
