I wanna play the console versions of Quake II, what version should I start with?
>play the pc version
Already did that, besides, I'm curious about these versions because apparetly they're different games.

The PS1 stays truer to the PC original whereas the N64 version plays like an expansion pack. I'm honestly more impressed with the PS1 version. The N64 version looks higher res (I'd say the PS1 version has the more detailed textures though), but the PS1 plays better. The 64 version is a lot choppier.

The N64 version of Quake 2 runs in 24-bit color mode and is the only console game in the entire generation to do it. I think Quake 2 on PS1 ironically took the opposite approach and has a lower color depth than typical PS1 games, which is probably the secret sauce for how they got it to run so well.

The N64 version isn't actually much choppier than the PS1 version in framerate, but it kind of looks like it because the animations are stilted and lack interpolation. PS1 version is more technically polished in that sense.

You do realize that a good majority of Saturn games run in 24-bit color right?

I have never played a fps on the ps1, does the controller adapts well for it?
The N64 Joystick is actually pretty good for these games imo.

The PS1 has the Railspider-Strogg, which is the coolest miniboss in the Strogg-universe.

No, The World is Not Enough supports 24 bit colour, too. In 16 bit mode it uses a shitload of noise to mask dithering.

The quite obscure Xbox 360 port included as a bonus with Quake 4 is actually the first modern HD remaster. No bullshit. It's little known but it's an excellent port, I got it with a used copy of Quake 4 for like 4 dollars. Not all copies have it though, only the initial print run. Not sure why it was never put up on the Xbox marketplace.

More info about the port here:

Same here, I just threw it on to make sure the disc worked and that was it. I had never gotten Quake 4 on PC so this was my first time playing it and it fucking sucked, at least at the beginning. Never played either one again until I saw some people specifically looking for that bonus disc with Quake 2 and looked into it further. I am playing through it currently and it's a good port, I have played through Q2 about a million times on PC over the years.

Only the VDP2 layer, the VDP1 layer, which is usually the vast majority of the screen in a 3D game is in 16-bit color.

>>6459643
I might have to look into that, thanks anon. Though I do remember thinking that the option for Hi-Color might have been mislabeled as it appeared to increase the resolution rather than the color. That would make the noise dither less obvious too if that was the case, but anyway, will check it out.

N64 port runs on Quake 1 engine and ends up looking very jerky due to poor animations, also the maps are quite different.

PS1 version used a different engine entirely and is very close to the PC version level-wise. It's the better version to play and also has the soundtrack intact. Also quite colorful and ends up looking better than PC version art-wise.

You do realize that VDP2 is what produces the final image to be displayed right? And then there's the games that do things like write their VDP1 output to a VDP2 layer so advanced color blending can be done. Do those games not count as 24-bit color?

VDP2 can't revive bits which have already been truncated by VDP1, even through blending.

>Do those games not count as 24-bit color?
It depends on whether the game actually uses 24-bit VDP2 tiles. The N64's GPU is capable of outputting 24-bit color 3D but in every game except those mentioned in this thread it outputs 15-bit color due to memory space limitations. It would probably be quite similar with how VDP2 was actually used.

I wish that someone could port him and the tank boss to Q2 and make a "Q2 the way id did".

but the Noesis rips ends up being crap since it rips the entire stage textures and the boss has shitty low res textures, even LOWER than Q2 software pcx itself
