I tried playing the WON version for unfucked render modes(specifically software), compatibility with older mods, and not needing Steam, but OpenGL is the only renderer that works. Software mode partially functions, the game is running and I can hear it, but nothing I do makes it actually show up on screen. Direct3D also lags like a bitch no matter what.
Also, Valve thought it would be a good idea to make the escape menu and the game itself separate windows, so even if I use a fan patch to make the menu the same resolution as the game, pausing causes the screen to go black and requires alt tabbing every time.

I have a question regarding fraggle's vsmooth DEH mod. https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/102462-vanilla-doom-smooth-weapons/

It's basically a smooth weapons mod that's compatible with vanilla doom and accurate sourceports (think prboom/crispy/chocolate) by using dehacked to 'borrow' extra animation frames, without causing demo desyncs.

While it works just as advertised with basically any WAD that does not use its own DEH lumps, and also works fine with WADs that use simple DEH lumps just for map names (like alien vendetta for example), I ran across a problem with D2TWID of all things. Apparently... D2TWID uses dehacked for something? And I'm not exactly sure what. And so it makes it so that if I load vsmooth on low priority and D2TWID later, some firing sprites for the chaingun and rocket launcher get fucked, firing the SSG removes your ability to pull out weapons, and just bringing up the pump-shotgun is enough to crash the game. What's up with that? The same behavior does not happen in DTWID or UDTWID.

So TL;DR What is D2TWID using dehacked for? I looked at the deh file but I can't really figure it out. Video related is in GLBoom+ with game speed turned down to 25% so you can see it better.

Now that my question was answered. let me just show how vsmooth looks under normal circumstances, in Scythe MAP27

All of those should work in any other sourceport of course. But the appeal here is that you don't have to sacrifice demo compatibility and accuracy to get these bells and whistles. GZDoom can afford fancier options due to its heavily modified nature. but loses the demo compat and accuracy of course.

The only thing I'm missing from Crispy right now in GLBoom+ is the brightmaps so that you can see demons' eyes glowing in the dark, that's really nifty. And I think that will get implemented in the currently active fork.

Fraggle is just kind of a wizard basically. You can read more about it in the thread that I linked in the first post.

You are using vsmooth.wad with d2dehfix.deh in PrBoom+ and not getting any problems?

I can use vsmooth.wad and d2dehfix.deh with Crispy Doom and it works perfectly, but using those in PrBoom+ causes buggy chaingun behavior, specifically it takes twice as long to switch weapons when switching out from the chaingun. I just remove d2dehfix.deh and still use vsmooth.wad with d2spfx19.wad for Pr/GLBoom+.

I'm not noticing any slowdowns when switching away from the chaingun. Make sure the game is loading d2dehfix FIRST and the deh lump from vsmooth SECOND so there's no problems.

To accomplish this easily, I just did like one anon suggested here earlier and put the DEHACKED file into d2spfx19.wad, same with the one for doom 1. I don't think it's worth it having it loose, unless you use chocolate or something.

That's just the advanced HUD that comes with prboom. You can change what key you use to access it in the key bindings. I have it set up so '-' makes the screen smaller, and '+' toggles between advanced HUD types. To return to normal doomguy statusbar, I only have to press '-' once. And yes, I've beaten all of scythe with pistol starts and no saves

Can we add Sonic Mayhem's alternate Quake 1 soundtrack to the links in the OP?

If you're not familiar, the guy who did the soundtrack for Quake 2, Sonic Mayhem, also did an alternate soundtrack for Quake 1. It was sending this in to Romero in 96 that got him the job doing Quake 2s soundtrack. It's called Methods of Destruction and only bits and pieces leaked for years and he was reluctant to talk about or release it because it was his first project and he was embarassed by it (it actually kicks ass but many artists are like this with early work). It eventually leaked, thanks to Romero leaked his copy through a friend, and Sonic Mayhem eventually relented after the fact and said he was cool with it being out there.

This soundtrack is more the style one would expect from iD at the time and is much better than Reznor's ambient soundtrack.

You later rise from the dead so you would be an undead ghoul type since you also eat flesh at times. It turns out Tchernobog betrayed you and resurrected you because he knew you would stop at nothing for revenge, especially after you found your love Ophelia dead, and Tchernobog knew Caleb was special in that with each he killed, he grew more powerful. Tchernobog planned to have you kill all the way to him and then he would kill you and absorb your power you unknowingly raised and delivered right to him. Of course, Caleb throws a wrench in those plans which leads to the travesty that is Blood 2.

Decent gimmick monster. If you can corner them, they're helpless meatballs, but if they air up in the air and have the space to move, they can be a serious menace.

I just did some testing myself. I was able to replicate your issue when playing with "Doom" and "Doom (strict)" compatibility preset. Worked fine on other presets. Probably a good idea to use Boom presets when playing boom compatible wads.

I noticed that many monsters can become more challenging if you limit their movement. PE trapped on some lookout spawning lost souls will do more harm compared to the one being allowed to roam free and get himself into harm's way.

Nah, you can just use monster-blocking linedefs to trap them without obstructing their attacks. And I can't recall if they are able to spawn souls off-screen.
