It is strange that for a game that so many people post here to say is their favourite ever from their childhood, I can google for some hours and not find a single map.

I actually played this game for ten minutes. I had this roommate in 04 who owned a Sega CD and a Dreamcast. Mostly I just played Garou, CVS2 and GGX on the DC.

It's hard to discern between "the culture" and things which stood out to me. I can remember it being compared favourably to Monster Boy (The Good One), and apparently Popful has a vagina. I remember that part because I like vaginas.

I started playing it today and it's interesting that I found some results for a Popful Mail (SNES Version), but not what I was looking for.
I just find it funny because I often joke about having played every game in the SNES romset and I don't remember it even though this is possibly my favourite genre. But maybe it was added later.

First time I had heard about was back in '03 or '04, because I was a Sonic fag and I used to browse the fansites. I remember there was an entry about a cancelled entry called Sister Sonic, which was really just going to be a localized version of Popful Mail with Sonic's long lost sister as the protag or something.
Apparently some old school weebs were angry about the news of Sega doing something like that, so they wrote in a bunch of letters to their offices.

I remember there was a mention of Sega Saturn in a Star Fox VHS tape from Nintendo Power back in the day. That was the only time I ever heard about Sega Saturn in my life until I came on /vr/. Never saw a TV ad for it, never saw it in a store, never saw an ad for it in the Sunday paper. I literally only heard the name once, in that video made by Nintendo.

I saw one for sale at Gibraltar Trade Center in Mt Clemens in 1999 or so. If that isnt definitive proof i don't know what is.

Do people actually say it was 'their favorite ever from their childhood'? I hear a lot of people praising it but it's usually in the context of "I recently learned about this obscure game and I really like it".

I think it could have been a lot better though. I really like the atmosphere, the graphics, the fact that the protagonist is voiced by the same person as Lina Inverse from Slayers and shares her personality for the most part, but the gameplay is honestly a bit lacking. The levels are too long and kind of monotonous, probably by design because the game is overall not too complicated or hard but long levels make you more likely to mess up and get caught in a monster's multi-hit combo and lose half your HP just by running into one spider. Also, although Mail is capable of quick movement the game punishes you for trying to move too fast by making sure you can never see too far ahead due to the way the camera scrolls.

Let's just say that is something that was only slipped into the internet recently. Why does it matter? It's a game you can play now, on a SEGA-CD if you choose to do so, or on an emulator.
Either a really impressive indie effort, or a huge act of goodwill from a company, releasing a fun game for free on the internet.

Back in university in like 2004/5 I had the bright idea to make up a fake late 80s prototype console and pretend it had just been rediscovered in a warehouse or something.
I got as far as making a fake emulator and the beginning of a couple of games, and gluing together some random plastic shit that I was planning on painting up to take photos so I could sell it to myself on eBay six months in advance.

Then I lost interest because I only finished like 5% of my shit back then. Now it's way less!
