Simon's Quest ruined it, then III ruined it again by adding a bunch of non-Belmont faggots.
IV is based, as is X68000. Then they ruined it again with Rondo and Bloodlines.

That's basically all Castlevania after the first, though. All in all, 4 is still among the most traditional ones, along with CV III (if Trevor-only) and Sharp X68000.

Bloodlines is low-key the best 16-bit CV in terms of gameplay because it removed air movement, so you have to commit to your jumps like the NES games.

this is the correct answer. IV and X68000 were return to form and the real castlevania.

I think it really sucks.

What I want out of a Castlevania anime is hardcore, balls-to-the-wall action where I get to see a Belmont (and possibly some company) whip the ever-living shit out of legions of demons to some classic Castlevania music, not some juvenile, half-baked political drama and/or romance. Castlevania games are primarily about the action, I don't see why the show should be any different.

>> No.6449532

>>6449189
I like the show's Trevor and Sypha. I wish the show was about them and Alucard and Grant slaughtering monsters on the way to Dracula's castle and building rapport, instead of OC vampires quipping at each other while Belmont spends the season doing nothing in a random location before pulling out the whip in the last twenty minutes.

I'm okay with a melanin enriched Isaac since the only thing I care about is what they do with the character. But Hector's started cool but is slowing turning shit, Alucard is shit, Dracula was turbo shit, Zead was shit, St Germain was cool, "blah blah prophet blah blah", pacing is shit, Carmilla et all are shit, "magic obedience crystal" etc etc

At least the showrunner is up front about knowing absolutely nothing but Castlevania. Season 2 was losing me but Season 3 ensures I'll miss the bullet that will be Season 4. Never had I encountered such miserable banter between two leads.

>> No.6449653

But you can still turn quickly mid-air (not on the NES games), and the land detection is WAY more generous than on NES games. Bloodlines might be the easiest 16-bit vania after Rondo.

Been attempting to do a no death playthrough of Drac X on the good ending route. Already did it on the bad ending route several times, which was much easier.

I think my best attempt so far was 3 deaths, but now that I've learnt Death properly and now that I have a good tactic against every problematic enemy in stage 4 when you have to hold to the key, it should be doable.

Does anyone know in Dracula X (SNES) what dictates whether or not you can throw several subweapons at the same time?

Sometimes you can throw 3, sometimes only 2, sometimes only 1.... I think it may depend on how many hearts you have left but I'm not sure.

>> No.6450950

I figured it out

>hearts between 1 and 20: 1 subweapon at a time
>hearts between 20 and 30: 2 subweapon at a time
>hearts between 30 and more: 3 subweapons at a time

Does not apply to knifes where it's always 1 throw at a time afaik. I wonder if it's the same in Rondo? I never paid attention.

also, beating the game without dying on the good ending route [x].

Looking at the beta version of Rondo, I think it's pretty obvious that some of the late scrolls were actually unfinished.
You know the ones I'm talking about, the ones which are pretty much straight lines with drab orange bricks backgrounds.

One thing I don't like about the X68K version is that the Simon doesn't move faster when jumping.
It's a staple in the series, it helps avoid hits and it's also a risk/reward factor, move a little faster but put yourself at risk.

It doesn't have to be as bad as in Drac X where the difference of speed between walking and jumping is insane, but if it's just as subtle as in CV1 or Rondo that'd be enough. It makes the game feels a little more sluggish than it should be otherwise, not to mention you have more reasons to jump with the downward whip attacks.

>> No.6454438

I think a really cool idea for a Castlevania would be if it had a stage map like SMW or DKC with branching paths. That way you can pass it off as having Metroidvania characteristics, but each stage would be a Classicvania with no levelups or things like that.

Castlevania Rebirth lacks focus imo. Level layouts and enemy placement are all over the place, feels very random. The game goes into all directions at once and it gives it a "bad fan game" vibe.
It's a shame because it had potential otherwise.
