The truth is that the Atari 7800 is very weak compared to the NES/SMS, it really can't handle very complex games. I recommend Dark Chambers, which is a Gauntlet-like game original for the system

Ain't no debate. Put it to you this way:
Back in the day, absolutely no one who wasn't an expert or a true blue nerd knew that both were 8 bit. In all seriousness, most people assumed that Atari was 4 bit, something that does not exist, to my knowledge, at least concerning video games.

I don't think it was simply too weak as it was just not designed for anything more advanced than 2600 styled games, however it did have the crazy raster effects the 2600 had which could be used for some relatively impressive effects. There was this 3D tank game (at least I think it was tanks) for both the Famicom and 7800 and the 7800 version blows the FC version out of the water. Scrapyard Dog is probably the closest thing the 7800 has to an "NES styled" game, but even it is very simple in scope, with Hanna Barbera-esque looping backgrounds.

The 800 DK port's only superiority is that it has the pie factory. Graphically, the nes kicks its ass. Ballblazer on the 800 definitely looks better, but that's more of an exception than a rule. Most nes games look way better than the atari 400/800 or 5200 (which is the same shit basically).

>> No.6446645

>>6446641
The NES DK is a quite awful port, the sfx, enemy AI, and physics are completely inaccurate to the arcade game. It's not just a matter of missing content.

Is the Atari 800 port more accurate in that regard?

Ballblazer on the NES is hot poop, the C64 version is crud too. The game was really designed around the Atari's display list system and didn't translate onto tile graphics.

Boulder Dash is one example of a game where the NES port totally beefed it. They made it way too cute/weeb and completely lost the atmosphere of the original game which was supposed to convey this feeling of claustrophobia and tension.

I'm guessing a lot of 7800 homebrewers have the same autism that 2600 homebrewers do, and it seems like the 7800 was more or less a 2600 on steroids. Compared to the NES it had blockier graphics, but graphics could have far more colors due to them pulling colors from a 'universal' pool as opposed to multiple tiny palettes like on the NES.
