Alright I'm gonna say it. I LIKE ff8. It has an interesting story, nice atmosphere and great music. But you are an absolute mong if you think its the best game in the series. The way magic works and the fact that you have to mash buttons while waiting for a drawn out summon animation to finish EVERY TIME kinda kills the experience.

Actually i was just searching every Store with my Father for Suikoden II, after my sister lend this MY beloved game Suikoden II to a Negro. I learned pretty soon the feel of loss.

Anyways, after like a whole day searching every store in around 200km (respect to my Father for his patience),
I saw it, Final Fantasy VIII and bought it.
When played it, I fell in Love (still not as good as my all time RPG favorite 'Suikoden II'), but surely one of my top five.

But, is VIII of the Series? For me, yes, but that's because it was my first Final Fantasy. And for the most, is their first FF also their best.

Would FF8 have been as widely hated if not for Spoony?

Every FF game past 1 tries to put some gimmicky system because the devs feel self ashamed of having a simple turn based combat system. Sometimes they work (ATB), sometimes they don't (Materia, junctioning, spheres), but KH actually added something fresh and new to the square RPG formula while retaining most of what made Square games great (letting Nomura run almost unchained is dangerous though)

It's mostly a joke since the only FF games I've taken a stab at are 1, 5, 8, and 10, and 1 is that good shit. But I think at least KH1 gets a bad rap from a lot of Square fans. It certainly feels a hell of a lot more like a Final Fantasy game than 10 did. Everything past CoM though is Advent Children era outlandish anime shit so I don't blame people getting turned off the series for that though.

FF8 is the blonde bimbo of FFs, hot as hell but a dead fish in the sack and dumb as a rock.

Aesthetically, FF8 is the most compelling retro FF. The 3D graphics look great for their time especially in comparison to FF7’s. All the 2D art is magnificent, and anything that’s original or futuristic looks inspired, gunblade excluded. The style is fresh, weird, and slick. The music is magnificently produced and arranged, even the terrible Eyes on Me sounds great if you kind of just sit there and dissociate yourself from its lyrics and context.

But then we get into the story and gameplay... what can I say about it that hasn’t already been said on here endlessly? Its fans will never back down, despite it being the most poorly constructed narrative and web of lore in all of JRPGs. Fans have to make up theories that are only slightly less terrible just to be able to sleep at night. And the gameplay was ahead of its time in the worst way, making way for overdesigned nonsense that we see in modern games like Xenoblade 2.

I don't think a series that got at most a few hundred thousand views is as influential as you think it is.

Thinking about it, I look at 8 the same way I look at 15: all the things I really like about the games have nothing to do with the gameplay, so I come to appreciate the game for reasons aside from its actual quality as a game.

Gameplay-wise, 8 has some serious weaknesses: drawing magic is a time-consuming pain in the ass, weapon upgrades basically don't happen if you don't know to use Card Mod (also requiring you to play lots of cards), for a bulk of the game your best offensive option is to button mash through a half-minute summon you've seen a hundred times already, limit breaks make little sense (I'm not keeping a party member at critical HP for a fucking damage boost).

I can totally understand 8 being your favorite - despite its flaws I enjoyed playing it as well. But to try and call it objectively the best of them, I feel you don't really have a ground to stand on, as long as we're judging it primarily as a video game.

And since this is basically just a "what's your favorite FF" thread, I'll throw out there that mine is 12: The Zodiac Age.

You don't have to draw 100 spells of each type, just like you don't have to grind to level 100 in traditional JRPGs

VIII is the only mainline FF before XI that I still haven't beaten. I didn't even mind the systems at all. It's just that I didn't like the atmosphere and couldn't care for any of the characters or the plot at all.

Money is also less useful compared to other FF games, there's no equipment to buy and weapon upgrading requires rare items rather than large amounts of money.
Beating Omega Weapon does require some strategy, it has an attack that almost always deals more damage than the maximum HP to the whole party, simply spamming limit breaks will get you killed in a few turns. If you use guides that tell you where to find stuff and how to beat it it's easy of course, but for first time players it's very difficult.
