I honestly don't think random map generation would work for quake, not only is it more complex than doom due to being full 3D, also 90% of the appeal of custom quake maps is the architectural porn. Most modern FPS that have tried the random map generation usually end up assembling maps out of a bunch of handcrafted rooms rather than generating all the geometry at random.

The default 90? Or do you go QuakePro mode and turn it up to 100 or 110?

I imagine it might be advantageous to slightly wider since you get a slightly earlier warning of when something's at the corner of the screen, like a pinky about to make you rocket yourself in the face or something. But I don't know if that difference is even worth considering.

Anon pls. I get that you likely won't do it on your first try before you know the map, but once you know where everything is, what do you even have trouble with?

>rush to the second archvile's platform so it lowers, hug it so he can't zap you

>Open blue door, collect soulsphere near beginning
>Make cybers infight with rabble of demons running around, and finish them off with BFG
>Press button in cybercloset, grab red key

>Kill stragglers, go up the newly raised stairs to exit

The only part of this that I would foresee a newer player having trouble with here is the 2 cyberdemons at the same time, and that's if you're not comfortable doing the 2-shot-BFG dance with them.

I beat Scythe E3 in the past, but that was using the cheap speedrun strats. I'm going back and doing UV-Max level demos of all my favorite PWADs, and episode-length or full-PWAD demos of what I can. I made a Scythe E1 UV-Fast demo and E2 UV-Max demo, but I don't think I'll do an E3 UV-Max demo, as there isn't even one of those on DSDArchive. So, I've decided to turn small health pickup in my mod into inventory item, and made two sets of sprites - it's supposed to be an Epi-Pen-like injector. Thicker one looks better as pickup, but worse in a used-up variant. Or I am overthinking this and I should just use a thick pickup sprite and a thin used-up sprite?

I admit I haven't played very many PWADs, but here are the levels I've played that I remember the most:

Map 06: Noir, from Darch's Preacher.wad (2018), pic related. This entire PWAD is great and worth looking at, but this level is my favorite. Notice how the level is wide-open, but it's not a single arena. It's divided up by hallways and rooms, but there are no doors, except to secrets and the exit. The gameplay is excellent. The map is filled with low-tier enemies, and ammo is spread out very thinly across the map, so you have to keep moving or you will run out of ammo, but the sheer number of enemies means you get punished hard for trying to go TOO fast. This PWAD is Boom-compatible. I recommend running it in GLBoom+, so that you can see the demos that come with the PWAD, and because the maps look a LOT better with OpenGL.

This video is in software rendering mode, which I don't think does the map justice, but this player's shtick is he always plays keyboard only, with software rendering, and with OPL or GUS emulated music. I'm gonna record my own videos of this PWAD eventually, but the only thing getting in the way of that is map 09: it's insanely hard, and over 40 minutes long!
I highly recommend you play this one, either skill 1 pistol-start no saves so you can breeze through it, or skill 2 no saves if you want to spend a little more time on it!

Map 03: Rocket Zone, from skillsaw's Lunatic.wad (2011). This map looks great, and it's especially fun on lower difficulties. Also, banger alert on the music track. The PWAD is Boom-compatible. I recommend GLBoom+, but that's only because the map takes place on the surface of the moon, and it doesn't make sense to me for the light side of the moon to look dark, like it does with software rendering, but you can run it in PrBoom+ if you want to; there are tech-base sections, and tech-bases tend to look better with the original software renderer.

Map 04: Warp of Time, from Eternal's Hell Ground (2009), pic related. This used to be my favorite level of all time until I played Preacher. This level is divided into four sections, each of which could be its own level. My favorite section is the pink guts section. Map 01 of this PWAD is probably my favorite introductory level of all time, aside from Duke Nukem's iconic first level. Maps 01 and 07 of this PWAD have mansion sections. The author SPECIFICALLY states that you need to run this PWAD with OpenGL for certain visuals to work, so use GLBoom+ so that you can also see the demos that come with the map pack.

Map 20: The Mouth of Madness, from Going Down, was in Doomworld's Top 100 Most Memorable Maps list, but that's not why I put it here. Maps 20 and 21 from this megawad are my favorite. Map 20 is the mouth, and 21 is the inside of the monster's guts. Map 19 is probably the greatest "troll" level ever - it's 200 monsters, exculsively arch-viles and pain elementals. This PWAD is Boom-compatible. I recommend GLBoom+ because the levels look way better with OpenGL, and because this PWAD's music was specifically designed for PrBoom's default MIDI player and default soundfont, so it sounds great in Pr/GLBoom.

Map 04: With Many Ablutions, from the Doomer Board community's DBP20 Dungeons and Demons. I like this one a lot because of how the lay-out has you revisit certain areas, but you are always coming from and going to different directions. I always wanted to study the map to see exactly what's going on. This PWAD is limit-removing, but I recommend GLBoom+ because some of the sections are really dark in Crispy Doom.

alright now after having played through it. Played on Zandronum. A lot of monsters on small spaces could not attack. There were several spots where the floor had no texture and you could look through it. A lot of misaligned textures obviously. The worst however was the door that did not move up, but disappeared up (the one towards the yellow key door). It also felt like the bright green base walls room towards the end felt very lazily put together in a hurry. Using the exit trap twice in a row in a map is kinda gay.

So I just played through Eric Harris's wad, UAC Base. He was one of the Columbine mass shooters and the media made a huge to-do about him being a Doom fan, referencing how the shotgun he had "was straight out of Doom" in his journals talking about their plans, etc. I was always told these maps were recreations of the school he used to train or something.

To answer the question of “are there Eternal mods for classic Doom,” then yeah, there’s a few. A Doom 4 mod called Embers of Armageddon has an Eternal addon, but it’s very early in development. Most of the new sprites are rough drafts, and the weapons are the only things implemented. There’s a mod called Doom Eternal Classic, but it has basically nothing but vanilla weapon reskins.

I actually know the guy who worked on map15 with dragonfly, he wanted to actually expand the concept of the clock but couldn't, i don't know if he didn't had the time or he wasn't in the mood but i know that he had a spiral thing under the clock or something he wanted to work with, also the Level pic was taken from a very basic version of where it was then worked more afterwards.
i know however that after he read up about a tutorial on how to make stuff using The stair maker of gzdoom builder he decided to work on another map of his own (using ancient aliens textures) which he his close to the limits boom can handle the amount of sectors, vertex and lines and it is without having any monsters

Forcing you to fight cyberdemons with a partial invisibility sphere on Scythe map 27 is such a funny gimmick, I'm not even mad.

Also I found a way to cheese this section of map 26 for when you are going for UV-Max. This ledge (top picture) is just high enough to block all cyberdemon rockets, but low enough so you can shoot your own rockets over; I think that was intentional. However, you can't even carry enough rockets to kill three cyberdemons, so you can fire into this wall and peek out just in time for the tracers to kill the demons (bottom picture). If you download the UV-Max demos from DSDArchive, you can see players dodging three cyberdemons' worth of rockets at a time, and it looks fucking incredible, but I'm not that good.

Pain elementals are a bigger threat if they are away in the distance with no way to shut them down or break line of sight. If the PE is close to the player however, then he is also trivial to dispatch by hugging him. Fun fact, PE's will only spit lost souls if they have line of sight to their target, so you can bait them to come closer to you by hiding from them.

Quake 2 is my favourite quake, simply because of the multiplayer. The custom maps, skins, models and pak9 files were mostly high quality and available in abundance. I had great fun playing with eraser bots after school during the week (modem costs v expensive during week). You could customise your bots with chatter, skins and models and have them learn any custom maps on the fly. Then it'd get to the weekend and I'd be playing q2 constantly. My family even had our ISPS phone number as our 'friends and family' number so it'd be even cheaper to play online. Miss those days!

I also went back to High Noon Drifter, playing Plutonia 2 with it. Very fun to snatch keys with the boomerang and double pack the super shotgun. The whips are also supremely OP, but in a good way.

That’s why I like HD so much. It takes the tacticool milsim premise and combines it with fighting against demonic enemies instead of other people, all taking place in the unique levels of a classic shooter and not generic blown out cities and towns. There’s also deadpan humor in it, like the bandage popup saying “hold x to not die,” the player’s ability to scrape up shrapnel bits from their pockets and flick it at enemies, the ability to wake up every enemy in the area by spewing a movie quote, and almost everything in the manual.

Check the manual, it mentions how to use the harpoon gun, the idea is you stick a monster and then hit that monster with a bullying attack, so like the shoulder check, throwing another monster into them, the pistol's altfire, the rocket launcher's altfire, etc.
Pretty much if the attack sends the monster flying when you kill it, do that.
