Back again with the trial mode in this game.
I made a thread some weeks ago about finally getting my first all-melon run, on 1-1, Treasure Hunt. Eventually I realized that there were ways to get a better score, on top of collecting all 30 melons, there's chaining egg throws at shy guys of the same color as Yoshi, as well as coins. Also the revelation that you can eat some of the stranded shy guys that seem to be unreachable, and even some of them can be killed with eggs. So I went back with all this in mind and tried to get a better score, but I kept fucking up.
Tonight I gave it another go and I think I did a good run.
If you're interested in trying to beat my score, this will be fun because you might come up with another strategy I haven't thought about. There's a speedruns for this game, as well as guides for melon-only runs, but it seems there's almost no records on pure scoring, beyond the melons.

Here's my score.
I'd say it's pretty good but it could be better, if somehow I manage to chain 4 shy guys for example. My max was chaining 3.

I was disappointed in Yoshi's Story at first, but it's a better game than I first thought. This seems fun, might try sometime.

Looks like somebody maxed out the scores. Apparently you can farm points throughout the game.

>> No.6427959

Last thread was great, nice to see you sticking with it OP. I've never had a chance to play Yoshi's Story before, but I'll give it a shot and see if I can get anywhere close to your score.

Yeah, this was pointed out in the other thread, I'm not really playing with the exploit since it takes out the real challenge.

You will start seeing this game quite differently, it becomes really unforgiving when you play for scores. Don't be disappointed if you fuck up with stupid mistakes. Each time you will be better and you will make everything faster, but you gotta stay alert to not eat any other fruit by accident, or not killing any shy guy by accident.
The best advice I could give you first and foremost is: when you grab the super happy fruit (the heart-shaped parachute item that appears when you eat 8 or so melons in a row), try to stay away from shy guys nearby until it runs out, because if you ground pound the floor, you will instantly kill them (instead of changing their color, which is what you want to do before killing them). But you still don't want to miss the happy fruit because it also gives you points.

Yeah playing for score can make this game intense but I think at the same time it's comfortable to look at, a nice balance

Finally got the 30 melons, but my score is still lower than that. I'm still a bit confused about the enemy points, probably not doing that correctly.

>> No.6431893

>>6430993
You just need to make sure to groundpound to make shyguys change their color. They need to match yoshi's color (red/pink and blue/light blue count as the same color for shy guys, red and blue). You get max points by killing them with egg throws, not eating them or jumping on them. After that, it's up to you how many you can kill with a single egg throw for chained multiplied points.

This game shouldn't have been made.

Eh, I love the aesthetics and uniqueness.
It kind of should have been its own thing though, being a Yoshi game, people will never not compare it to the superior Yoshi's Island.

That pic is my favorite level. Very exciting.

OP, you tried score attack on anything besides 1-1 yet? I remember you said you were focusing on that level.

Also, time has no effect on score right?

I’ve always feel like that during its development, the game went from being a YI “sequel” to just being its own type of Yoshi game. However because the fact that everyone have already seen its original title “Yoshi’s Island 64”, they were expecting an actual sequel that’s exactly like the original game.

I believe I've seen him, he has a GDQ run, right? I'm not really interested in speedrunning, more on score, but still interesting to see people play this game at batshit insane speed and all the control tricks that can be done. Also LOL at those tips.
>>6434491
Yeah I haven't tried other levels yet... well, I did some time ago, but failed miserably, and had no idea about how the proper scoring system worked other than the melons. But yeah so far I only focused on 1-1.
No time limit at all.

>> No.6437001

So does that infinite score glitch apply to every level? If there are levels where it doesnt apply then ideal runs can still be interesting.

It can still be interesting in any level, just refrain from using the exploit.

Agreed. I’ll probably be shit at the melon run challenge, but I appreciate how there’s some people who would give this game a chance to see what it offered that most people haven’t seen or noticed.

I always found it strange how in GDQ, many of the games I'd consider to be popular, are actually not that popular.
I know that Yoshi's Story is not popular, mainly because it's overshadowed by the admittedly superior YI, but I've checked some speedruns for games I consider staples of my childhood, like all the good licensed Konami and Capcom games, and they barely have any audience, and it's always mostly just the speedrunner, and 1 guy in the couch, and very few donations, most of them not even talking about the game.
Probably it's because guys my age don't watch GDQ/speedrunning and zoomers don't care about stuff like the Animaniacs games, but I digress.

I agree with >>6427959, OP. The last thread was great and pretty refreshing because it’s probably the first time I’ve ever seen someone talking about YS’s gameplay, challenge, and secrets. Usually whenever a YS thread was made, it is always complaints about the game being baby/toddler-tier and disappointment about it not being YI.

I don’t watch speed runs much but from what I’ve seen, the amount of audience tend to varies. However I mostly seen a small amount so like you said, speed runs probably don’t get much attention.

Then again, the games they use for speed running are probably unpopular themselves like Ape Escape and Super Monkey Ball 2

Yeah I don't really follow speedruns, only watched a few because they came up on my YT recs and was interested in seeing how these people break the games. Some games get like full crowds of people screaming as if it was one of those e-sports events, but some other games that I expected to have piqued more interest were really lonely and aisled.

The game has a built-in "achievement" of sorts if you score 18,000 points by the end of story mode you get a slightly different ending. It's like Star Fox 64 where Pepper would comment "that's expensive but worthy" if you score above a certain threshold.
It's not trivial but not hard at all.

>> No.6447780

>>6447778
Correction if you get 30 000 points you get some different flavor text, the yoshis will start singing along, an accoustic guitar will accompany the tune and you get a music box remix at the end.

You also get different text for scoring below 10,000 points which is surprisingly not easy.

Fair enough I was just pointing out the "good" ending because it doesn't seem to be well known. Trial Mode scoring is not much different from Story Mode except that you lose points for losing yoshis.

>> No.6449671

>>6447807
To be fair story mode is even a lot more stressful because if you fuck up once, you have to restart all over again, all the levels (well, just the 6 of them, but still).
I never attempted any scoring run in story mode yet.
