Everything is playable, what most people don't realize is NEC didn't QC input lag via a lotcheck system as stridently as Sega and Nintendo so retail games for the PC Engine are all over the map for input lag natively even before introducing the conversion to digital that will bring more lag. Lords of Thunder is the only game where its noticeable, but its still playable if you know the game, if you already sucked at it that isn't going to change.

The only thing I really noticed was the d-pad on the controller is stiffer than on a real TG-16/PCE controller, so diagonals on shooters aren't as easy to perform.

Think of it as a whole new game system and library to explore, then. If this was just TG-16 games it wouldn't be worth it, but since the other half of this are PC Engine games it has plenty of worthwhile titles to play and explore. It has the best arcade-style game collection next to the Genesis/Mega Drive, so it has plenty of shooters, some of which are still up there with the best of the genre.

No, I already own more capable general purpose computers with more current versions of emulators for that console, and isn't it all arcade ports anyway?

It's not about playing games. It's about buying product, because some people get off on that. When you're tired from shit job and shit lifestlye, buying thing for fleeting high is easier than doing thing and setting up emulator on pc or phone is confusing and scary and illegal i don't want to go to jail im a good boy i demand that you tell me I'm a good boy for stealing game and movie >:(

This in short is why people buy these things. Also it gives "retro gamers" something "new" to talk about and get excited by in an hobby all about not being new.
Makes them feel like this thing is for them, and marketing for these things with e-celebs and whatnot influencers have been solid enough to make everyone believe you need at least one "mini" in your house to belong into the "retro gamer" community.

And all of this, is also exactly why other people don't like it, because for them "retro gaming" is also about being outside of modern day consumarism that demands you to buy the new shit console at the high price because you're told to.

>I can go to the mall with my girlfriends and hear less talk of consumerism
Because nobody's buying anything in malls anymore anon, they're glorified showrooms, then everyone goes home and buys things online for cheaper. Why do you think malls and retail have been dying a slow, sad death the last two decades?

I've heard malls have rebounded a bit because zoomers cum from spending money and they are, actual quote, "big 80s fans"

Just like arcades/barcades

They’ll never be as big as they were but they won’t die out like fatalists predicted. In our increasingly isolated society people still want social events. It’s more fun going to an arcade or a mall with friends once in a while than staring at a screen at home alone or ordering shit off of Amazon.

Do you think barcades (this natural portmanteau should not be trademarked) will still exist after this pandemic? That's a lot of fomites.

You're probably right. I was wanting to have a look at the mechanical arcade here but never got around to it.
