I'm starting this for the second time in a little while. I previously only got to the end of the first combat area and am just going to restart as I remember nothing.

Is there anything I should know, or guides I should keep tabs on for anything? I'm kind of someone who likes to explore as much content as possible, though I'm not looking to spoil the game. I'm mainly playing for the storyline, though the party system seems cool.

I'm aware that people seem to rave about the second game moreso, but I read that the games are all connected, so I wanted to get this story down first if anything.

never played the 2nd one, but this was the first rpg i ever played. if you don't want to grind in this game, you have to be smart about your fights. there was one particular boss fight with a dragon that i had a hard time with, afterwards it was fine.

make sure you write down what the npc's told you to do if you put the game down for a week or else you won't have many in-game reminders of what you're supposed to be doing

I often do have the problem of not comprehending NPCs correctly anyway. Thanks for the advice.

Talk to Leon in kalekka when your HQ is level 4, then talk to Mathiu, BEFORE you capture Sonya. If you dont, the final battle event flag gets triggered and Mathiu will NEVER give you the letter to recruit Leon. This happened to me and ruined my perfect file.

Is there anything else important that's missable besides party members? Sidequests, story elements, etc.

>> No.641883

>>641830
Dont execute any generals
Dont refuse Maximillian or Sancho
There will be an optional duel late in the game using Pahn. Dont lose.
The last chance to get Mace is right when you land at Shasarazade. You need to take all 4 blacksmiths to him at once and this is the last time you will have 4 available slots.
Octopus urns and celadon urns are rare drops from bon bons. Get them early.

I think thats everything missable. Theres a few areas you cant return to but i dont remember the names. Just comb all the areas for treasure and you wont have a problem with the rest.

Also anyone that dies in an army battle is permanently dead. You need everyone alive and recruited to get the last character, so id reload if that happens

the game was unpolished as fuck (played it last year for the first time), but that made me like it more than s2. s2 was more polished, but that made the flaws stand out way more

I don't even know what you're talking about

>> No.642017

Suikoden thread? Hell yes. Man, I love the character recruiting although games haven't exactly been consistent with it.

>Suikoden 1
If you miss a character it means you just weren't paying attention to the game.

>Suikoden 2
Multiple really hidden characters with their own requirements, timed quest to recruit one, possible wrong choices with monsters, etc. Best at this.

>Suikoden 3
Generally easy enough, although some backtracking will be required for some characters.

>Suikoden 4
More obtuse characters with a LOT of overseas travel to get them, couple of unexpected party members.

>Suikoden 5
Return to S2 form with hidden characters here and there and generally have to work to think in order to recruit certain individuals. Second best in this aspect.

>> No.642015

>>641979
This actually applies more to S2. Fucking blueprints and recipes, man.

Across the board, how much of the story and events are dictated by the player's decisions in all the games?

>> No.642046

>>642034
Not at all, aside from very minor decisions. It's still a JRPG with a lack of C&C, but that's not where Suikoden shines anyway.

Suikoden 2 is one of the greats that was unfortunately overshadowed by big name JRPGs on the PS1.

I would recommend playing the original first, though. 1, 2 and 3 have loose connections to one another as opposed to the last two which were prequels.

Also, Suikogaiden Vol. 1 was translated a few months ago and that actually touches upon WHY Clive was chasing Elza.

I actually dislike how awesome they made Nash. If you go by Gaiden's story it seems like he singlehandedly rebelled the Highland army when they were besieging Greenhill.
