What some players will try to do instead of blocking is to upper that shit, but you have to do it perfectly and there's also a mental element to it because the Vega player doesn't have to actually come down on top of you, he can run away. So you have to visually confirm he's coming in and then upper.

Can't speak for how it was in the arcade days when nobody knew or was good at the inputs, but now it's much easier to play motion characters. When someone's getting right in your face a point blank fireball to get them to back off is a big help. Doesn't work when you have to charge for 1.5 seconds and by the time you're done they've already got you on the ground.

>> No.6426169

If someone's right in your face, wouldn't a crouching medium punch, a grab or a quick jab be better than a fireball? Over-relying on specials makes it harder to learn normal attacks in-depth.

>> No.6426223

>>6426169
Yes, that's true, but maybe an anti-air DP would've been a better example. I don't know, I just feel like charge characters require a different level of mastery since there's that extra aspect of management in knowing when your charge is done or not in addition to everything else going on.

You are wrong. ST still has a competitive community and a good portion of the players are younger. Like literally born too late to have played it in arcades. They got hooked on fightcade or the HD remix. ST is a very unique, extremely lethal game not only within SF but fighting games in general. Its only major flaw is the degree to which it's unbalanced, far moreso than most fighting games these days.

The entire metagame rules in Evo and its descendants are all from balancing around ST's quirks. The reason it's double elimination? The reason sets are 2/3 at the minimum? The reason the loser can switch characters but the winner can't? 100% because of 2. ST's one big actual problem (which was significantly improved compared to HF) is character matchups that are deeply positive or negative.
