Why couldn't they just give us Chrono Trigger 2 like we asked for? Instead we got...this.

Yeah story is janky. Characters shouldve been fewer and more fleshed out. But combat was interesting. And the art direction and music are both perfect. No doubt an essential ps1 game when square was good.

the game was way too easy, even without understanding the battle system its almost impossible to lose. new game+ enemies dont get any stronger and your characters are way stronger so whats the point

>> No.6407027

CT was a product of the 90s a lighthearted game, with the psx a new era of edgy "whatever" heroes arrived.

>> No.6407032

I thought it was good. Story was okay. I liked the plethora of characters which allowed you to just pick who you liked. I never understood why other JRPGs don't always let you recruit virtually everybody.

Your entire party had nothing to do with the story, which was a problem, because CC was a rather story-heavy game. If it was more gameplay-focused, sure, that would've been pretty cool.

You fags want CT 1.00000000001a, so go fuck yourself. Kato was right, 100%. In the years to come his work will only gain more of the recognition it deserves. But you are too fucking dumb to grasp his genius, which is why you're like a crowd of angry monkeys groveling before a monolith in the face of the ending which even as plain in-your-face text you're incapable of understanding.

I never asked for Cross or a CT2. To me, Chrono Trigger was perfectly fine as a one-and-done story with no sequels or spin-offs or whatever.

>> No.6407097

>>6407086
Yeah, Cross was a mess and a failure. being a failed sequel to Trigger was just insult to injury. The game really shows which members of the cast were actually responsible for everything that was good in Trigger and which ones were dead weight.

Before the game even starts Crono, Marle, and Lucca (the same people who defeated Lavos) get killed offscreen by generic Porre soldiers. Yeah. That's some pretty shitty writing right there.

Masato Kato, apparently. IDK, perhaps because I grew up on Dragon Ball and I got used to Toriyama's art style, but I believe the final art is far better than this, especially the outfits.

I guarantee Chrono Trigger wouldn't be nearly as popular if it used those character designs.
Dragon Ball was at it's peak (worldwide) when Trigger came out. Preferences apart, It was 100% the best choice.

>> No.6407376

How could they have done a direct sequel to ct? The story is pretty wrapped up by the end of it and anymore time traveling would have just unraveled defeating lavos

>> No.6407379

>>6407376
They could have made a new Chrono Trigger with an unrelated story but a similar style, like they did with FFs, or Enix did with DQs, or Capcom did with BoFs.

>Why couldn't they give us the same exact game and called it Chrono Trigger 2
Same reason why Super Mario World 2 replaced the lost levels. It would be too hard for you Westerners.

>> No.6407463

The true ending of CT pretty much concludes the story. So even if there would be a sequel, what would it be about? If we consider the animated cutscenes canon, there's a potential side story for Lucca, but even that would be just an infinite time loop.

What exactly were they gonna do with some light-hearted faggotry like trigger in a sequel? The game involves over 65 million years, and somehow the only good-aligned character to die comes back to life. They didn't write the game in a way where a sequel would've made any sense whatsoever, so they made Cross.

I fail to see the problem here, Chrono Cross is a great game, and while it's connections to Trigger aren't that strong I'm glad it felt like it's own thing for most of the game, a straight up traditional sequel to Chrono Trigger would make no fucking sense at all.

Chrono Cross at least proved that the nebulous "Chrono series" which as if now really only encompasses two games, that a Chrono game can reinvent itself take on a different focal point, in this case being about parallel worlds rather than time travel. It's a neat game, I'm sorry you can't get over yourself and just enjoy things.

>>6407008
I'll agree with this criticism though that would just one thing kept the same since Trigger, both Cross and Trigger become extremely easy after a certain point, there's virtually no challenge, but there are other aspects about them to enjoy.

>> No.6408276

"Too many characters" is a weak excuse when the game is meant to encourage more than one playthrough to get everyone, anyway. That being the case, they shouldn't have pussied out, and allowed there to be divergences in story content and characterization between playthroughs. It doesn't help that the glut of the story is world building through exposition, which is the worst way you can do it.
