Any tips for boxing? My plans when I do resume are (in order):
1: Go blow my way into the San Mona gun shop with TNT and pray for some fucking interesting guns.
2: Do the boxing quest stuff I noted with my IMP merc hopefully.
3: Take over the town in the top left corner, since I assume that'll improve Bobby Ray's if nothing else.

Yeah worth a shot. Never know what you'll find with him. When you're playing it next, hit V and let us know your progress score. You can gauge what's available that way.
>Do the boxing quest stuff I noted with my IMP merc hopefully.
I've never actually worked much with melee characters so never done the boxing quest.

Oh absolutely, there's only so many times you can spend 15 minutes reloading one turn in slightly different ways just to find an outcome where your bullet hits and theirs does not - then repeat that a dozen times in one fight. Feeling like you're accomplishing nothing over several hours is a good way to lose morale.

Now? Now I just need to know where they are, run up to them and pop their heads like overripe zits. I'm actually getting shit done for a change and hardly ever having to reload anything. Night time might be helping, I unintentionally have been doing night attacks recently so maybe that's been in my favour.

To my knowledge, you can't without editing files. As your progress rating goes up, so does gun selection from vendors. You'd have to go into the XML and change the coolness rating (pic related) to a lower number. There's 50k lines in the Items.xml though, so you'd want to do a find and replace for all coolness ratings from 1 - 10 to 0.

Shotguns are great in the beginning.
They have better range/accuracy than pistols and cheap MPs/SMGs. For someone like Leech with high marksmanship and the hunter trait, a shotgun is basically like a sniper rifle.
For unarmored opponents, one shot to the chest will basically always kill them, or sometimes crit them but they'll lose all their breath and collapse soon anyway. If they have armor, the punch might not kill, might not even do physical damage, but will drop their breath almost completely.
Shotguns also have some neat special ammo like lock busters or flechettes which destroy armor.
You can also get choke attachments to further upgrade damage/range.

Not him but they're ok for the more enclosed parts of meduna. CAWS with attachments can still do a lot of damage. They're still outclassed by assault rifles for the most part. ALLOW_TACTICAL_MILITIA_COMMAND = TRUE allows you to move your militia about like you would a squad. That's quite nice for placing them at SAM sites to hold.

Think I'll see about taking out the nearby SAM site and working on money, train militia, pay shadow, pass through San Mona and finally get back to where I was in Chitzena.

Honestly I've done half a dozen or so playthroughs here or on /vg/ before and the biggest complaint I've had before this one thread was one guy who said he found it boring but didn't comment again. This has been a completely unexpected, but then again I've never restarted with another game / had starting settings to mess up. I hate having to restart, but someone / multiple people were saying it was my best bet and if I was to do it then it needed to be early.

I do have the option of simply remaking the old IMP merc once I get back to the first area of Chitzena and that's what I originally had planned, though I really don't see how one character is a big deal and certainly not the end of the world that this one tool seems to be making it out to be. Probably won't now though, people like that make me defiant.

I was genuinely torn between recreating my original merc as closely as possible and just doing what I eventually went for, the tiebreaker for me was that these restarts have killed JA2 a bit for me and if those stats would get me back where I was faster and I'd have to put up with less crap, then so be it.

Really I'm not finding it making a difference over the old merc outside of being able to carry more shit, there's just not an appreciable difference between level 7 with 93 marskmanship and this.

mostly important for covert ops/spies. if they're spotted near a dead body, their cover might be blown. you can move bodies away to make the area safe
or you can just clean up the town from corpses. you can move them somewhere away from roads so your mercs don't see them later rotting and get a morale drop.

They don't penetrate armor very well, so it's actually pretty great against police/kingpin/hicks, but they fall off by the time you're taking on just elites. Really only good for knocking off early game sentries on night missions, but you're better off if you move someone in to kill them anyway with a knife. I never really got a lot of use out of them. It's fukken convoluted and there are a lot of different methods so I can only really break down what I use. I don't use everything though.

>Blue/green (holowpoint/glaser)
High damage, low armor penetration (green is double both those things) Good early game, useless late game except on bugs/cats. Green out of a smg absolutely shreds bloodcats and bugs. This color I think applies to gas grenades too.

>White (match rounds)
I use it about as much as purple for anyone with a rifle. I think it increases your accuracy and range. That's supposed to be stuff people use for shooting competitions. I think it's good for snipers/rifle guys.

>yellow (tracer I think)
Light up bullets/grenades. I don't use the bullet yellow, it's supposed to make your auto shots more accurate but it negates flash suppressors so I neglect it, I'm sure there's a use for it. Yellow grenades work like break lights. So yellow = light.

>Red (Armor-Piercing)
I only really use in rifles or as a backup for purple smg.

>Snowflake icon (Cold-loaded)
Only really useful for rifles that take AR suppressors. Because the AR suppressor is only like half effective you use it in conjunction. Right now I have this bullshit 9x19mm rifle that only takes AR suppressor despite shooting pistol bullets, so I have cold rounds for that. They do less damage though so it makes more sense to use cold rifle ammo than cold pistol/smg ammo unless you're trying to go really fukken sneaky smg commando mode, but I wouldn't because the damage is pitiful.

>Purple (AET)
Your best choice when you get an engineer on your team like maddog. They make your gun degrade faster and have likelier rates of jamming so you need to pay more attention to repairs between fights when you go full AET. It's basically mixing blue and red ammo and getting the best of both at a cost to weapon stability. Very useful during auto/burst for getting the animation where the guy flies back and sprays blood out his chest.

cont
so gas grenades operate like HP for people without masks on. green's deadlier than blue. It doesn't really make sense but I try to arrange this by color in my head.

>Tan (buckshot)
these use blue clips/mags/shells but have a tan number for ammo which is annoying. They spread. Really great early game, I switch to slugs for late game for shotguns if I use them at all because slugs eat armor. But shot will still drop a dude in armor because you blow a chunk of their energy bar and when they're really close that'll still knock them out.

>>6392191
I'm not crazy on rocket rifles or stuff that uses fingerprint locks. HEAT rounds are good on the tanks and anyone with a spectra suit. HE is just good on tanks. AP is good on soldiers.

Lastly I think bullet size is a factor in damage but I can't be arsed to look for a comparison. Because 1.13 uses fucking x,y calibrations for bullet sizes.

X is the bullet's diameter and Y is its length.

So like 7.62mmX39mm ammo does more damage than 7.62X25mm ammo because it's a longer bullet (a rifle bullet being longer than a pistol bullet). (pic related)

7.62mm rifle ammo does more damage than 5.56mm because it's a wider bullet.

It's true to life for the most part but it's very tricky if you're not into guns.

Unironically blow up the door. Breaching charges can incapacitate someone directly behind a door. Most times however they're camped in the room with a clear shot to the doorway. In this case blow up the nearby wall and/or doorway.

Tnt will do the job but I've become a much bigger fan of chain explosions. So if you put a jar of RDX crystals down and then chuck a grenade at it the chain reaction makes a pretty big boom.

I've heard that breaching shotguns are an option but it's a bit niche whereas explosives solve all kinds of problems. Just don't get hit with any explosives while carrying RDX or you'll be incinerated.

I will throw a grenade at it now. Might be a bug. Mini grenades typically knock an enemy off their feet so either your guy threw something that registered as a miss or the game fucked up. Cover negates them pretty well.

Honestly with the number of quality bomb guys in 1.13 I'm surprised it's not a more popular method like in X-com. Since everything is destructible powerful explosives negate a lot of those FUCK ME standoffs where you try to breach a building with a bunch of dudes in it and get barrel stuffed. They're never prepared for you to blow the side wall while they're pointing guns at the door so it's a massive boon.

I always take shank by late game and instead of making him do anything I have him tag along in the back, away from everyone, muling around whatever explosives I'll need for a given area.

Landmines as well, really. Complete game-changer with regards to SAM sites since enemy squads usually only come from specific directions and if you know where they're headed (holes I cut in the fences when taking the site are dummy common) then you can completely disrupt their assaults.

I have no idea if this is a bug but when I took the meduna gardens the enemies that came in to retake them would constantly spawn in right by the major minefield in that map so I barely had to fight anyone.

I have no patience whatsoever for the crazy micro required for tripwire claymores but they are disgustingly effective.

You would definitely like Commandos 2 if you liked Shadow Tactics, the gameplay is extremely similar. JA2 is supposed to be played like Darkest Dungeon, mercs are expendable, but you can also play it like an RPG where you focus on training individual skills, the game is quite versatile. I don't see how they'd would make a competing product to something like 1.13 which thrived on perfectionism and long-term support. The 2D retro graphics are like half the appeal, and "modern" JA2 already exists, it's called UFO.

Like, sure they can try to captivate the normie audience, but everyone outgrew the need for sequels, especially after failures like back in action. It'd be like asking for a Commandos 2 sequel slapped together in Unity when the original game aged like fine wine.

I guess we like the series for completely different reasons - 1.13, especially in its current stable iteration, is the epitome of bloat and too many cooks in the kitchen. It's fine in my opinion as a JA2 remix or whatever, but it is severely imbalanced buggy mess that is in no way a superior experience to 1.12 for the first-time player.

More doesn't always mean better, and just because you added in modifiers to Scully's CTH because Hitman farted downwind on a Tuesday in the rain, doesn't make it a better experience.

The appeal of JA/DG/JA2, and what differentiated it from XCOM/UFO, was that the characters you hire had real personality and quality VA, the 80s action movie feel and stereotypes, in addition to the excellent strategy and combat layer.

>> No.6409071

>>6408972
I don't think that any of 1.13's additions detract from the 80's movie style or the merc personalities, nor do they weaken the strategy and combat layer of the game.
1.13's greatest strength is the tremendous amount of control and variability the player has in adding mechanics and tweaking the way things work. JA2 1.12 is already an excellent game with tremendous replayability, but 1.13 makes this nearly infinite. Aside from how impressive of a mod it is, it certainly does hold a slightly larger place than a similar mod might in a different series simply because Jagged Alliance ceased to receive quality followups to JA2, and so 1.13 existed as a sort of epilogue to an excellent game.
Honestly, I don't understand why there are people so upset about the general appreciation for 1.13, as it certainly isn't overshadowing some worthy sequel made afterwards. None of the things that make JA2 great are removed from 1.13, and if a larger variety of weapons and attachments is a severe issue, it can be turned off fairly easily.

Cool hyperbole. No, CTH overhaul wasn't done over petty attention to detail, it was done so guns don't land every bullet in burst fire at half a mile range.
>the AI being dumb as bricks with no semblance of what would actually happen in a real shootout is somehow the epitome of a first time playthrough
You clearly know jackshit about the current state of 1.13 and have no argument here.

i mean if you use her normally at the start of the game (combat and militia, some medic) her exp level and marksmanship goes up stupid quick. at least lvl 7 in meduna, and experience level is by far the most important stat in the game.

It's worth getting into if you enjoy the DOS look. Plays way slower than vanilla JA2, and obviously you won't get much out of it in terms of realistic tactics, though.
