Am I wrong in thinking this game added a shitload of innovation to the genre? I recently started replaying it and am impressed by how well it holds up today due to innovations it had.

>Auto Battle system (Phantasy Star IV had a macro system which ends up being better but it came out a bit later as well), great for dealing with trash
>Things to do on the field aside from run into random encounters, dungeons, and towns (hunting, fishing, dragon doors, dragon marks, fruit tree bashing)
>Party member leading actually makes a difference (Bo can walk through forests and hunt, Ox can bash walls and trees, Mogu can dig, Karn can unlock doors, Nina can fly, Gobi can swim)
>Party member fusion, allowing you to take some of the strengths of multiple party members from your benchwarmers into your battle lineup)
>Large party you could freely change members in and out of active party (Phantasy Star series do this earlier maybe? I don't know, but this was before Final Fantasy VI for sure)
>Animated enemy sprites (possibly in earlier games but I can't think of any off the top of my head, this was 1993 though)
>Setting up your own shop (kinda rudimentary but you can get rare items doing it)
>Different prices at different stores for the same items allowing you to be a Jew.

Though it still has some underwhelming aspects, such as spells doing flat damage, which can be good and bad I guess, but you can't tune up your casters to do more damage.

The next few games of the series obviously were much better

I know back in the day (like ~8 years ago) there was a menu glitch in the SNES one that screwed graphics up when you left one particular kind of menus, I forget which kind. If this has been fixed/a better romdump has been established then disregard.

>> No.639063

GBA version adds a dash function and cleans up the interface and menus (including fixing a somewhat rare graphic glitch when you leave a menu) and font. Sound isn't as good though. Uses the exact same translation. If the sound doesn't bother you, I'd recommend playing the GBA version. If you move onto the 2nd game, just use the retranslation patch on the SNES version and play that.

I remember using this awesome graphics restoration patch for both GBA games, it was glorious.
But after a little search, I could only find the one for BOF2, for some reason. There's some forums with people looking for the BOF1 one, but no one has the thing, it seems.

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,14142.msg234790.html

It's a shame, I really wanted to replay them without burning my eyes on the GBA palette.

Fantastic series. BoF1 was one of my first JRPGs, sadly have never found a copy of BoFII. The debate between III and IV used to be a regular back in the day.

Which do you favor, /vr/?

Also did they make many others? There was Dragon Quarter I never played, but thats all I know.

>> No.639190

>>639117

early in the game, you'll probably burn through a lot of stacks of healing items, until you get Nina.

One tip, once you get the E.Key, you can use it as an item, it damages every enemy on the screen for 30 damage flat (even against enemies you normally hit for much less). It's useful to use for Nina's damage for pretty much the first half of the game.

There's also some other items that can be used as magic in combat. Any weapon that has "Flame" in it like FlameDR, FlameHR, FlameRP (FlameSD is the exception to this) will cast fire spells of various magnitudes, IcyDR, IcyCW and IcyCN will also cast ice spells. The IcyCN in particular does 100 damage to all enemies. There's quite a few others too.

2 of the Goddess Keys you get can alter time, the DkKey and LtKey, they'll make day to night or night to day respectively

>> No.639232

>>639174
BoF2 is better on the SNES (with the patch) anyways.

>>639117
After you fight a boss named Gremlin, you should never at any point have to grind as long as you're not using Mrbl3s to skip encounters. Beforehand, I'd suggest grinding to level 3 at the start of the game, but after that you should be good to go. Although, if you need a good spot to grind (because Gremlin is pushing your shit in) there's a spot far to the west of Tuntar & Tantar (You'll understand later.) that's pretty good for it. It's got enemies from later in the game there sort of like those spots in FFI, FFII, and FFIV where the edge of a continent had monsters from a nearby continent instead.

Somethings to note: The E-Key can be used in battle. It's best to have your healer use it when not healing. The 3rd character you get (who will let you move through forests) should be placed in the back row. Once you get a boomerang, keep it as your melee weapon for the MC (switching to your best sword when you think there will be a boss fight). This will apply until you beat Gremlin as after that the MC will have better means to fight than a sword.

>> No.639234

You know, it took reading into a guide for this, but I finally figured out why Karn's transformations got hit like they were plowed by a Semi every hit..

There's bugs in the equipment.. the PowerHT that I had equipped on Karn AND Gobi increase incoming damage by 100%.. despite being pretty expensive (not randomly found cursed items meanwhile the CursedHT is.. perfectly fine aside from being heavy) and technically being the highest defense rating helmet both of them can wear aside from the CursedHT.

>>639186

I had to emulate the first one, though I used to rent it when I was younger. I bought the second when it came out. I'm a bit sad to say but I threw it in my SNES just a bit ago and the save battery was dead.

Yeah I pretty much used boomerangs on Ryu the entire game except certain boss fights or if I was grinding M.Slimes later on Don't forget the Tri-Rang on that island! since it's a single target.

I kinda wish some of those ridiculous weapons you get right at the end had more time to shine. You get 2 weapons that can be used as items for really powerful spells StarHR for Comet 400 damage to everything

But there's really nothing to use them against because at that point.. it's the end of the game and you just use Agni

Really? BoF II was one of my favorite SNES games. I loved the Township, the somewhat quirky localization (I know a patch "fixes" the Localization but I find a lot of more "true" Localizations take away some of the charm), the Shamans and the story. I liked that you could save your old man in the first place, I think I remember there was multiple endings depending on your old man and the township.. a bad "sacrifice" ending, and a good ending with no sacrifice since the Township can seal Infinity instead of your dragon body

Only thing I don't like about II is the fact that Dragon Spells are single cast events rather than a transformation, and they drain ALL of Ryu's AP.

I started playing Breath of Fire 2 a few weeks ago on /vr/s recommendation, and I have just recently completed my first playthrough.

A couple thoughts: (some spoilers probably)

1. I first thought the new translation was inaccurate in how risque it was, ala DeJap's notorious "I bet she fucks like a tiger!" scene. Then I got to a part in the game where you need to meet a witch named Nympho. It was at this point that I paused to check what her name was in the original Japanese, since the translation was clearly fucking with me.

Well, she really is named Nympho in the Japanese. Her tower is covered with the statues of exboyfriends she's turned to stone. Her actual living space is a large empty room with a single massive bed. From that point on I had much more faith in the translation.

2. There's some leveling in the game, especially in the early part. I didn't mind at all, but it surprised me since I hadn't played a game that required leveling in some time.

3. Fuck the giant bug monster you fight in the well. Fuck it.

4. SERIOSULY fuck the plant woman fight. She's absolutely horrifying.

5. I thought the monkey dude was an asshole, but I really dug his questline. I had a bit more respect for the animal afterwards. I still didn't field him again.

6. Tiga. I was pissed at the game for making me fight an unwinnable battle, and pissed at the character for macking on Linpoo. But after I gave it some thought, I really began to feel for the guy, since I realized the game was setting him up to be killed.

Then I learned that the whole time he flirting with Rin he was in a relationship with another woman. Hahahahaha, what the fuck, Tiga?!

7. Breath of Fire 2 has two different methods of flying. The first one is very fast and super convinient, but towards the end it's replaced with something much, much slower. That was a mean trick, Capcom.

Dragon Quest games are pretty terrible though. Every single one of them I've played has been SO Old Hat. There's just nothing really innovative about them aside from like, the chapters setup of IV and the wife and kid in V (and you really need the DS version so you have more options there to make it really different).

They have some decent characters but the gameplay is.. really hard to sit through after most rpg's had moved on and come up with innovative new things in gameplay after 1990, while DragonQuest... stayed pretty much entirely the same.

Dragon Quest is pretty much responsible for the entire JRPG genre. The only reason people say that it feels generic is because, well, it IS generic, but that's because it pretty much started everything.

And even then it isn't fair to say that, since every DQ game does something different. The first game was the original, II added more party members and some other things, III added classes and gave you the ability to form your own party, IV had a chapter system, V let you get married and have kids and it took place over a large period of time, VI took the class system of III and made it deeper, VII took VI's class system and made it even deeper, VIII swapped out the class system in favor of having a points system.

That's a pitifully ignorant look at things.

Other games in the genre are to blame. The elements of DQ were borrowed badly in many series like Final Fantasy, and people who haven't played DQ think at a glance that those elements (grind, basic combat, exploration etc.) are just as bad in the original games. They have no clue.

Contrary to what may seem at first, Dragon Quest games are completely unlike any of it's clones in how they actually handle their gameplay.

There's no "well DQ does the tedious chore of random encounters and samey menu driven combat 'better' because they were the originals" Forget that, I actually find the extra things, such as using weapons as items in combat, active time, auto battle, macros, team based techs/skills/combo attacks, and limit breaks to be more enjoyable than the really old hat play of DQ.

DQ is a series of tradition. What I love about it is when I get the next numbered game, I know I'm getting a classic JRPG. The fact that it remains to it's roots is why it's so loved.

But anyways this topic is about BoF. Was there anyway to make Scias in 4 a good fighter? I really wanted to use him but he just sucks in the end game.

which is why I started the thread, because I picked up and replayed BoF I recently, remembering enjoying it as a kid but thinking it was a samey DQ like game just with an isometric battle screen, but I had forgotten how many new things it had added to the genre. I was expecting to play it a bit and go "yeah that was just nostalgia, the actual game isn't so hot anymore" but found myself really enjoying it because of the variety they had added.

It was Capcom, their first RPG, a source of a bunch of new ideas. Kinda sad that like all good things Capcom created in the 20th century, they later destroyed in the 21st.

Hate to be that guy, but Capcom's first RPG series was for the NES called 'Destiny of an Emperor' based off Romance of Three Kingdoms. The producer of it went on to make the BoF series. If you enjoy minor innovations in RPGs you should check it out, it's a very underrated game.

Apprentice him under the sailor and KAHN to turn him into an absolute game breaker at his magical skill's expenses. Near the end of the game, apprentice him (for a while) under Bunyan to raise all of his stats and give him 100% hit rate at his HP growth expenses.

Also, Scias' Shinning Blade skill is an insta-killer against those pesky enemies with the absurdly high defense stats so he's awesome to farm for rare drops since the moment you got him AND the guy can also equip swords that can deal 2 swings per turn.

Seriously, Scias is like Peco: absolutely underrated.

I'm pretty sure not EVERYTHING they released during that time period was god tier, there is a reason the first street fighter is forgotten for instance... and not to mention their entire catalog of 80s and early 90s dos ports (the late 90s dos ports were pretty much identical to the console counterparts though) though maybe those shouldn't count

Always wanted to get in these games. Hell, I own III, IV, and Dragon Quarter.
But something about the gameplay has really turned me off, more so in III and IV. It feels so oddly slow, and the master system itself is very vague. Not sure. Need to give them another chance I think.
