Daikatana is an expert level FPS. It's designed to be for experts, even at the lowest difficulties. The problem is you have far too many people who played and reviewed it who really had no business playing it with their skill level. It is in no way a bad game, just completely misunderstood.

Above all else it just doesn't feel good to play and has really annoying enemies and terrible friendly AI. The level design is boring too. One thing that is secretly really important to FPS games is how satisfying they are to play. They need good audio visual feedback and fun weapons and Daikatana mostly lacks both.

I played Daikatana with the fan patch and I actually ended up having more fun with it than any modern shooter. With the bugfixes and ability to play the game without the AI companions you are left with a game that is a decent 90s FPS and not much else, I think most of the hate stems from the absolutely godawful N64 port.

Daikatana was sort of the last hurrah of a certain early era of FPS where people actually got excited about weapon count and the number of types of enemies rather than basic campaign quality. I *do* love the well-balanced weapon-variety shooter (see: Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Half-Life 1, most Insomniac games) but it's all about good level design and AI and general campaign/gameplay quality, not just omg so many weapons and so many enemy types. Daikatana basically throws in the kitchen sink on the number of weapons in the game but doesn't actually bother being good at stuff. The game was all about quantity over quality and tacked-on features that weren't well-tested or well-designed (cough cough, the companion AI).

Masters of Doom is a good source here. Romero blew a lot of money on things that weren't directly tied to the development of his game and nepotism is a bad business model for video games. He had to put in rules about deathmatch playing on company time, which was a huge fucking problem since the whole building was MADE to be one big LAN party. The bad press didn't help either. If it had released on schedule with half the features more competently executed it would have been fine. Or if he had said fuck that and opened up some kind of crazy computer megacafe with the building and funded his game with the profits to iron out the issues that would have been fine too. But he didn't think about that.

Carmack is a crazy person who fantasized a model for advanced engine rendering tech in the shower, but he had a very, very strong work ethic and tolerance for crunch that I don't think Romero really considered when he put together his company.
