I grew up on CRTs and have a nice Trinitron sitting right behind me, and I use CRT shaders when I emulate. Not sure what the point of this thread was.

It's the internet, everyone spouting emulator/filter autism is either meme'ing or a fat tranny wearing cat ears. Real hardware with a crt is a luxury, it takes up a ton of room, the stuff isnt easy to find anymore, and generally you have to be fairly committed to retro gaming as a hobby to have that stuff. Emulators cost nothing and are good enough in 99.9% of instances, whether you use the standard jagged pixels or a filter.

i do tend to prefer playing in original hardware, but that's not always an option

N64 emulation is shit but I've beaten or got through most of many snes and genesis games with no problem.

If everybody stopped giving a shit how others enjoy retro games /vr/ would be deader than the /po/ board. That being said, I prefer playing on original hardware when possible. Only exceptions are with the Neo-Geo, and the many unsuccessful 4th and 5th gen consoles, all of which I'd rather emulate or watch a longplay.

I think most emulated games look fine with just a bilinear filter but messing around with different CRT filters in Retroarch is just a lot of fun. The CRT royale and hyrule shaders look pretty good in my opinion with N64 games.

Original hardware is still king because of the experience but I'm glad that we've got so many options to play retro games and tweak with them in whatever way you like. It could've been worse.

CRTs were the only TVs around, everybody fucking had them and it was recently too, I mean I was playing PS2 and Wii on a crt in fucking 2009 or so, and it wasn't because I wanted to be retro or anything, it was just normal to still have CRTs at that point
CRTs aren't ancient tech, they're not fucking 5-inch floppies, they're last friday stuff.

there are people young enough to have never used a CRT, though probably not many here are that young
and yes, it's been about 10 years since people started really moving away from crts, it might not seem very long ago to you, but it sure is a long time ago if you're 14 years old, at this point i don't think many people even have a crt as a spare tv, or have one lying around in their storage area, though even then it's not yet difficult to find one
anyone actually old enough to post here (18+) will probably remember using a crt to some degree
