Does anyone else get tired of people who say "Final Fantasy 4"? It makes me immediately write people off in my mind and think of them as an elitist weeboo, due to encountering so many in the past who roll their eyes and act like you just killed their dog if you say Final Fantasy II.

I was born in 1984. The cartridge I got when I was eight years old said Final Fantasy II. I never even learned that Final Fantasy II was the fourth game in the series in Japan (keyword there) until I got the internet in 2000.

So for anyone who says FF4, and looks down on anyone who uses the name they grew up with: congrats on being a pedantic faggot. Whenever you go on your first date with a girl at the age of 45, go ahead and tell her that you know FF2 was the fourth game in the series. I'm sure she'll pull down your pants and suck your weeboo microdick right then and there.

You sound mad.
I call it FF4 because the actual FF2 has been available in the west for over a decade now, so for most people, referring to FF4 as FF2 will just be confusing.

Is Japan FF2 a good game? As in, the NES title or whatever.

Its rough. They were experimenting with the formula, so character growth works a lot like skyrim (you get better at magic by using it a lot, you get better defense and health by getting hit a lot), but it wasn't that well balanced.

It was also the first FF to have a narrative with actual characters in your party rather than just generic allies (your fourth teammate is constantly switching for like 3/4ths of the game)

You give way too much of a fuck about what other people call shit. Just call it what you want, while realizing that you will have to clarify which FF2 it is when having a discussion about it. Also don't take high grounds based on what you call video games.

Read my post more carefully, anon. It's okay to call the game FF4 if that's what makes you happy. Just don't wrinkle your nose at people who say FF2 and consider them uncultured Boomers or whatever and look down on them.

I get it. Really, I do. You (general you) are a nerdy bullied kid. You were always picked last for kickball and you were invisible to everyone. You want to feel a sense of superiority for whatever piddling reasons you can find. I get it. I do. But people with more life experience, like myself, can still remind you that you're being a huge asshole.

It's okay, anon. I know that you're still 14 or 15, and you think the most important thing in the world right now is getting laid. You're obviously not getting laid—because you're posting on 4chan's retro gaming board—so you feel the need to lash out at others and accuse them of the things that you think the popular kids are thinking about you. But it's okay, anon. You will grow up, realize those people were pitiable normalfags, and you will join the elite autistic shitposting club.

Or you will cripple yourself entirely by constantly worrying what normalfags think of you. It's your choice.

The problem is that FF2, FF3, and FF5 have all been officially re-released in the west multiple times each under their appropriate titles/numbers, as early as the PS1 with Final Fantasy Origins. You'll just have to accept at some point that we live in a globalized world thanks to the internet and all of the mainline FF games have been available in English and with correct numbering for 15-20 years minimum. This is no one's problem but your own, I'm sorry you're so stubborn about wallowing in blind ignorance.

People are shitting on OP (with reason), but calling Aerith "Aeris" is somehow acceptable despite that localization not being used since the 90's.
This board is retarded.

Final Fantasy 2 is a video game available currently in western markets which does not feature the characters Cecil and Kain. Calling The game featuring Cecil and Kain "Final Fantasy 2" could be legitimately confusing to people you speak with and you have to understand and respect that. Pic related, it's what you find if you search "Final Fantasy 2" on the Google Play store in the United States, and it is NOT the SNES game with Cecil and Kain.

That's more of an aesthetic preference. Whether you say FF2 or FF4, it's essentially the same thing. Aerith just sounds stupid. I don't get why they retconned it.

There is no confusion to be caused by calling Aeris by her originally localized name. It also sounds better.

Meanwhile referring to FF2 SNES as simply FF2 can cause genuine confusion because there is another game by that name which is more widely known, and FF2 SNES remains better known as FF4 even by those who are old enough to have played it back when. Meanwhile Aeris is known best as Aeris by literally everyone, course correction by Square or not.

I was born in '74 and call it FF4 because it saves plenty of confusion. I don't look down on you for still calling it that but it seems a redundant thing to hold onto.

The difference is that every subsequent re-release of SNES "Final Fantasy II" has been renamed to "Final Fantasy IV" while every subsequent re-release of Final Fantasy VII still calls that character "Aeris." You can go buy FFVII on Steam right now and it will have a character with the default name "Aeris." You cannot go out and buy a modern version of Final Fantasy II containing Cecil and Kain.
