A couple of days ago I've played Excitebike 64, at first I thought that it was a motocross skin over the name of the franchise but the thing is very very good.
You really have to take care of your engine energy (just like in the original) but its's very challenging, it has a nice use of the analog and also it looks very good on the system.
Underrated game for sure, it might be as good as wave race but less comfy.

You end up with a weird catalog of games instead of the current and constant re-imagine of the same popular genres with tiny changes.

My memory with Wave Race 64 was the summer of 97, going to the pool every single day, and then when I cameback home in the afternoon, I'd play Wave Race 64.
Great memories, and great game. I agree it might be my favorite racer on N64. The thing with WR64 is that it's unique, by far the best of its kind, other jetski/water racing games (even arcade games) didn't get to be as polished as WR64, not only the water effects graphically but the way these waves actually imapcted on the gameplay.

I played the shit out of Wave Race 64, 100%ed it and the reverse mode or whatever although I don't remember what that entailed exactly because it left almost no impression.
I know it has a glowing reputation but I didn't appreciate it at all at the time.

My N64 was a preorder, and immediately after release there was a massive price drop, mothers got mad, so Nintendo apologised by mailing out free games to preorder customers.
My free cart was Wave Race.

So I had it but didn't care about it at all because I never wanted it and didn't buy it intentionally. Which is relevant because at one point it was one of probably only 2 or 3 games I owned, so I played it to death but only grudgingly.
