It really surprised me just how good DQ3 was. Like, even with a story that was barely there it was just a large game with a lot to do and places to explore. It was a hell of a lot of fun. It was really hard to choose if I loved DQ5 over 3 because they were both great.

As for retro JRPG's.

Skies of Arcadia is my favourite game of all time, so I love that quite a lot. The sense of adventure is something that I adored, the world, the characters, hell even the story were great to me. Even if the encounter rate was high it really never bothered me and never ruined my experience with the game.

I also really loved Lunar 1 for this reason as well, lovely little game that has a lot of charm and adventure behind it. Great characters and I liked that each guy had a girl they loved in the party, it's just such a wholesome game in that regard. Good soundtrack too, I loved the map theme to for having that feeling of fun adventures with friends.

Phantasy Star for the SMS is such a cool 8-bit JRPG. It was my favourite until I played DQ3, but it's such a cool game otherwise. The first person dungeons, the large sprites for enemies, and even exploring three worlds. The OST can be a bit grating at time but overall it's a pretty good JRPG and very unique in terms of early 8-bit ones.

Also if it counts, Pokémon Gen 1 and 2. I may have played and finished them when I was a kid but I think they were the first games to really make me feel that sense of adventure that I loved. Plus I was pretty much the perfect age to adore them.

Currently going through DQ7 myself, in an attempt to go through all DQ games, but afterwards I think I'll finally go back to Suikoden II and finish it, been putting it off for 4 years.
