Why are the levels so bland in this compared to Super Mario Bros 3?

>> No.6376523

Another shitpost with a loaded question. More new @ 11.

Super Mario 3 levels are so short I finished another one before I was done typing this post.

>> No.6376923

Bad thread. Mario World levels are far more varied and challenging than Mario 3, there's just not as much distinct landscapes

>> No.6376924

Look, I love SMB3 and it's my favorite Mario, but these shitposts are making me root for SMW, which is also a masterpiece, and the only other Mario game that comes close to 3.
But it's not even worth arguing anymore, stop shitposting pleb.

Actually 2, and also at least one other ice area, I think in one of the vanilla dome levels if you go into a pipe.

Because SMW is eye candy and nothing else.
>unskippable intro yoshi cutscene
>unskippable tower crumbling cutscenes

No this is actually in the secret area of Donut Plains, where you end up in the Valley of Bowser.

That's literally the only other ice level besides the one in the Special Zone. Not unless you want to count sub areas of certain levels.

>Not unless you want to count sub areas of certain levels.
Yeah I meant the 2 levels are Donut Secret (the valley of bowser one), and Awesome in the Special World.
By "one of the vanilla dome levels if you go into a pipe" I mean what you said about the sub areas of certain levels, I think one was in one of the Vanilla levels, can't remember if there were more.
People usually forget about that, and think SMW only has 1 ice level (or none at all)

Exemplify why. I can see a difference in overall style in SMB1/2J, but SMB2USA, 3 and World all look very similar.

dude, you seriously come off as the Mature Gamer
I'm sorry, I don't see how that looks any less "fisher price" than SMB3 or SMB2. Point out stuff at least. Is it the green grass? The weird geometrical mountains in the background that look more like something out of some Bauhaus architecture model rather than Fisher Price?

You're not really providing arguments as to why you think one looks good and the other bad though.
I think both games have a pretty classic, timeless art style.

>> No.6379637

>>6379609
It's the colors. Look, I get it, Super Mario is "for kids", but it's not "for babies". Or at least it wasn't. World looks plastic, if we're going to use immature toy analogies, then SMB3 is like Lego and World is like Duplo. To my eyes, everything is too bright, too rounded, too sterile in SMW. I understand that Mario games have a cartoony look that is meant to appeal to younger audiences, but World seems like they were skewing too young.

>> No.6379651

>>6379637
Again, I don't see it. The trademark geometric mountain shapes in the backgrounds are probably as away from "fisher price" as it gets in Mario games.
The color palette in SMW is as colorful as SMB2 and SMB3. Mario games have a lot of "rounded" objects, in fact, again, SMW has the rectangular mountains, while SMB3 has a lot of rounded hills (which SMW also has, anyway).
Not sure what you mean by "sterile" either. You complain it's very colorful and bright, but then sterile? I dunno.
Seems like for some reason you have a bias against SMW, but you can't really explain why.
It'd make sense if you just didn't like SMB in general (or at least not SMB2 and 3), but if you claim to like SMB3, I really don't know.
I always see SMB3 and SMW as the most similar in the Mario series.

I guess I just don't have the vocabulary to explain to explain to you how SMW looks like an elementary school art project in comparison to the stageplay aesthetic of 3 and the creepy dreamworld of 2.

>> No.6379670

>>6379654
I don't see how an elementary school project could have abstract geometrical shapes that reminds of Bauhaus architecture, but OK.
I'll just leave it as you have a bias against World but are unable to explain why.

SMW has fucked up ice physics anyway.
For some reason your mid-air momentum is different like you're still on-ice. SMB3 got this right.

>>6379670
Kids have limitless imagination and no point of reference for anything. They come up with and draw all kinds of weird stuff. That said, the mountains aren't the issue, and it isn't bias against the game either. World is a fine enough game, I don't have an issue with the actual gameplay. I like Yoshi. But the way the sprites look, the backgrounds, the color choices, how else can I say it? I seriously don't have to vocabulary. It looks like a kid sat down with some crayons and drew a Mario adventure. The worst part to me is that this was completely intentional, you can see in World 2 how they cranked that goofy crayon aesthetic to 11. 1, 2, and 3 weren't like that, but hell maybe that's what they were going for too but they didn't have horsepower.

YI went for a completely different art direction (even though it also takes elements from previous SMB games).
I just see SMW too similar to SMB3 to understand your "fisher price" appreciation. Both look very similar to me. SMB3 has the stageplay aesthetic here and there, SMW has the abstract geometric mountains, but all in all both games share the greeny grass lands, the underground caves, etc. And both are very colorful and vibrant.
The only Mario I see as more gritty is SMB1 (and 2J, too, although that one added the eyes/faces to objects, which became a series staple). SMB1 still had some of that "construction site" theme, coming from the original DK, and the greeny lands/treetops taken from DK Jr, but most of SMB1 has the industrial/construction theme, with all these bricks and structure iron plate platforms.
SMB2USA already introduced the more bright colorful and "fisher price" art direction, which was furthered in 3 and World.

SMB2US is a creepy fever dream. In the first level alone, the Shy Guys look like cultists, the birds are wearing plague masks, and disembodied faces chase you when you steal keys. It's a weird look, which fits, because it's a weird game compared to the other mainline Super Mario titles.
Then World comes along looking like this

I don't see what's wrong with the Reznors. If they appeared in SMB2, you'd claim they're "creepy creatures from a fever dream".
I just don't see that much of a difference overall between 2, 3 and World.
I do see the difference with SMB1, as I said, but not the others. And SMB2J is like an inbetween, because while it still looks mostly like SMB1, it added the objects with faces.

Four tiny triceratops with stupid faces rotating on a random pile of two-by-fours haphazardly nailed together with the name REZNOR spraypainted on the front isn't creepy. It's stupid and ugly. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this thing for the first time. What were they thinking?

It's because most of the levels are empty. They are bigger, but have long, empty stretches and sometimes copy-pasted segments. Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 are the same case, except not as bad since Shinobi 3 isn't as big of a game as SMW.
On the other hand, SMB3's levels are too short, but I'll take that over long, empty levels.

Examples of parts in levels that are empty, or are copy-pasted? I don't remember any.
