Agreed. Stop (completely) shitting on (the notion of) "ideas guys"- Many of them are willing to put in the work, just are woefully bad at doing so. It's understandable that a lot of bad apples have soured the bunch; but much of the time, many people are attacked simply because they don't have other people to lean on to help with their lack of skills and capability.
I've seen countless people attacked and chased away from the community for similar reasons and not necessarily being idea guys, but for stupid drama.
Don't be like that. It doesn't matter who is who. What matters is DOOM.

I've always liked the idea of Doom Retro, or at least the idea I have of it, basically Crispy Doom with Boom compatibility, but it has always run like shit on my PC for some reason. It also seems to add a bunch of random nonsense features that seemingly only exist to try to differentiate it from other source ports.

This. For all the shit some mappers have been given for their "shit" works, all they've really needed is a patient and understanding party. Just look at He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. And wouldn't you appreciate those people helping you out with your ideas in tandem?
Most idea guys WANT to help out. They just don't have the capability or experience to do so. I've rarely heard of an 'idea guy' who wanted everyone else to do ALL the work; only idea guys who fail to communicate or be understood properly while they struggle and fail to execute what they want to put out.
Many idea guys want to help; they just don't know how, and are waiting for you to give them a menial task that you already know how to do and they DON'T, to help you get to more important manners.
It's a symbiotic relationship, not a parasitic one.

>> No.6379482

I know we all like to laugh at idea guys but at least they have enthusiasm and a vision. They just need to learn the patience and discipline to actually do the work themselves. Without idea guys we'd be stuck playing boring boom format techbases forever.

First impression: Rocks are missing textures from this side. The ledges over lava are more annoying than challenging.
Long climb is inspired, but ambushes get repetitive. Look for a way to do some sort of bait-and-switch maybe.
Telefragged arachnotron. Amusing but pointless.
Changing floor height when you change textures is generally a good advice, you got rocks just lying at the lava's level.

Then I died.

Again, this isn't entirely their fault. What they think and insist on thinking looks good is NOT what everyone else thinks is good.
Another coin with the same face is what a mapper thinks good gameplay and what their preffered gameplay pacing is, in comparision to the feelings of others.
I hate to use HIM again, but he's a perfect example of hatred and drama originating from little more than conflict of execution of concepts.
A lot of the "terrible" works are actually brilliant in concept, just terrible in execution.
Pic related is what I'm guessing to be some sort of etheral limbo/deadstate.

Was Rise of the Triad not that successful? It seems like a pillar of retro FPS but I don't know that many people outside that scene who have even played it. I also recently learned it was never really ported to anything like Doom or Wolfenstein 3D were, no console versions at all and only an apparently shitty iOS port. That seems odd to me, I remember playing the fuck out of it as a kid but I lived in a rural community with only a couple of other friends who played games at all and had no idea how much a game sold or a gauge of how popular it was.

Being an ideas guy is fine, but you should also learn to do something as well.

Romero is a massive Ideas Guy, but he's also a very talented level designer, and he did some of the programming on the iD titles as well. Likewise, Sandy is another massive Ideas Guy, and also a talented level designer (for more than just FPS), on top of a good writer who has some famous tabletop roleplaying games to his belt.

You forgot to unpeg a few door sides and I think there are some untextured faces around the lava waterfalls in the first mancubus room.

The short steps that seem like they can be almost climbed, but aren't, are rather disorienting and make traversal less smooth. Also if you run out too fast from the starting area hallway you can pretty much fly over the chaingun and miss to pick it up, maybe push the weapon back a bit.

The plasma rifle secret is barely a secret at all. Instead I think it'd be better to have the weapon out in the open and then put a couple of cell packs in a less obvious secret area. Though you do get a plasma rifle in the room with lost souls, but there it felt too deliberate in a sense of designer's intent being too obvious. Basically saying "here are some lost souls and here's a plasma rifle, go wild." It's not necessarily bad but it's too much on the nose.

Way too many hell knights and revenants, especially during the red stairs section and the areas it leads into. Perhaps reduce the number of ambushes in that area, in particular on the stairs. The archvile felt like a kick in the guts, especially in that area with his attack being hard to avoid as you run off the stairs.

The top area of the stairs near bookcases could be extended to the end of the wall, as otherwise trying to get on it becomes too slippery and it's easy to fall off. I like how you can sprint on the bookcases, but It's a bit of a letdown that getting to the end of it leads nowhere. Also the items up there could be better arranged so the player can get most of them in one or two run overs.

Honestly the map is a slog as it's too long and there's too many enemies. After a dozen tries I got to the room with the second archvile and pain elementals and gave up. Nicely looking rooms, but you gotta work on the pacing.

Don't want to put you down anon as designing maps isn't easy, but keep at it and look more for inspiration in D1 maps instead of D2's.

I think the dislike towards people who present themselves to be more knowledgeable on a topic than they actually are is understandable. Especially when they make it a part of their identity and even more so if they're making a profit from it. When someone benefits more from their personality, presentation and mass appeal, rather than genuine insight, information and display of skill it makes one doubt the validity of their opinions.

Doesn't help how these supposed retro gamers bring in their own equally clueless followers into the communities, which in general brings down the discussion. Furthermore their popularity in turn has them become some sort of a representative of the community and with that comes the possibility of their ill informed, superficial opinions having a greater impact. This doesn't really pertain to this particular case, but happens in general with communities and these so called e-celebs.

They are just common people no different than you and me, but because they can talk in a mike over some neatly edited gameplay footage, their options become more relevant, or are at least perceived as such. This is what I feel most people have a problem with overall.

His format is more akin to a Playthrough/LetsPlay, but all the crap boring parts are cut out, and only parts left are ones he wants to comment on/talk about.
So in essense a concentrated commentary of his playthrough of the game and all the noteable parts he encountered in order he encountered them.
And that is exactly his apeal for many - ability to see the playthrough of a game from someone else's perspective without the need to sit through the boring parts as well.

Civvie isn't too bad, but his videos can be a bit "and then this happens, and then that happens" at times. I'm disappointed he cancelled his TNT video.

Gman is terrible at doom, but has too much of an ego to admit it. He claims final doom is artificial difficulty. Sigil pretty much kicked his dog too, apparently, judging by his temper in that video.

However when he got popular he caught on the mainstream "hackur known as 4chan bad" and began to actively distance himself from it (by regularily mentioning how bad 4chan is on his vids), while spouting same shit opinions he got from his time here, notably his "hitscanners bad hur dur" rants that most often boil down to "If I can't circlestrafe it to death, it's bad".

I agree but at the same time I think the term is real, just not for Doom. Either a map is beatable or it isn't. A good map maker will place just the right amount of health and ammo for someone to proceed. "Artificial difficulty" should be reserved for RNG bullshit. Like if in your FPS game enemies can throw unavoidable instant death grenades and your ability to proceed depends on if the AI decides to throw a grenade or not. Or in an RPG if an enemy has the ability to crit and kill your character at any time with no realistic way to play around it or something. The original Street Fighter games were infamous for having the AI perform impossible combos not even a tool assisted player could perform. This was done to suck quarters from players.

Bunch of stuff was fixed and added. The biggest changes from v1.2.0, which I posted ages ago are: localization support for exported dialogs, importing compiled Strife dialogs for export to ZSDF, refactored code that's less of a nightmare to maintain, and overhauled navigation UI, last of which made the editor perform a dozen better compared to the old tree view piece of shit.

Also the first game to ship with official maps made exclusively multiplayer deathmatch but it never usually gets credit for that either. In fact I think alot of people only know that because of John Romero having to refute Tim Willit's claim of coming up with the idea for multiplayer only deathmatch maps himself during the development of Quake.
>Commercially, the first FPS's published with multiplayer-only maps at launch were Tom Hall's Rise of the Triad (ROTT) and Bungie's Marathon, both published on December 21, 1994 – 18 months before Quake's release. Marathon included 10 multiplayer-only maps. Each successive release of ROTT added more multiplayer-only maps. In fact, ROTT had several multiplayer modes beyond co-op and team deathmatch. Tom was very inventive when it came to ROTT's multiplayer modes and maps, long before Quake was released. As Tom remembers, "Yes, it had a TON of multiplayer maps. Many with unique rules, ridiculous heights, etc."

>Tim cannot claim this idea as his in any way.

Personally, I think that's the way to go. There's no right or wrong way to play Doom, so I'm not sure it make sense to enforce one. That said, the DUMP series enforced pistol starts, and no one complained.
All that being said, if you're just getting into Doom mapping, I wouldn't worry about making whole megawads or episodes and enforcing pistol starts. For now, start small, and focus posting individual maps and getting feedback. /vr/ loves to play /vr/ maps.

>> No.6381746

Not even fake ROR. Let me elaborate

-Sector-over-sector means when two sectors of different height occupy the same 2D space, but only possibly as long as no parts of the sector is visible for one another. You do this in Build by making your first sector, then make another one next to it. In 3D mode, adjust the second sector to be higher or lower than your first one. Then go back to 2D mode, grab your sector, and drag it over the first one.

-Fake room-over-room means two sectors that are constructed in different 2D spaces are rendered on top of each other ingame. Both of them can be visible at the same time. They are still not physically on top of each other, and this is usually shown on the automap as well. This technique was used by Blood and SW.

-True room-over-room means two (or more) sectors that occupy the same 2D space, yet fully traversable and visible all the time. This required the Build engine itself to be modified, so EDuke (the DOS version, not EDuke32) was the first source port to allow it.

there are two major differences between limit removing and boom compat.

first, boom has "generalized" line actions meaning you make any sort of door, lift, crusher etc with a variety of speeds, pauses, damage values, etc. limit removing on the other hand makes you use the subset of line actions that were actually hardcoded into the game by the developers.

second, boom has conveyor belts, which have become important for "voodoo scripting" where a voodoo doll is dragged down a hallway and activates any number of line actions in the order given, which is often used to implement scripted setpieces that the game doesn't otherwise provide for. this can be sort of done in vanilla using some advanced trickery but it's much easier and more universal in boom mapping.

I found out recently there's a GDX port/remake of Legend of the Seven Paladins. Now that the game is actually playable and you don't get obliterated even by the weakest projectile based enemy on the easiest difficulty, I'd say it doesn't look bad at all, considering it was a LameDuke tier pre-alpha. I gotta level with you anon. It seems to me that you thought about how to make the map look pretty first, and what kind of encounters to put in second. Which is okay. But the encounters definitely took the backseat. I yawned through the whole map up until the last room with the dual archviles, the pain elementals and the barons, where I died for the first time. I understand you wanted some sort of grand finale but when the whole map is kind of an easy slog with ~200 monsters with uninteresting encounters, to just drop that in the end is a kick in the nuts, specially how GZDoom handles things.

I think you could've made this map much better if you had made it thinking of interesting encounters first and looks second. It looks like it has a lot of fancy dynamic lights thrown in for the sake of being pretty, but there's no real substance behind it

My advice would be - try to make maps that are playable in PRBoom+ or even Crispy. If you start off relying on GZDoom's features you're not likely to get a grasp on what makes engagements fun or interesting

Full disclaimer, I may be being too harsh and/or biased against maps that require GZDoom, but hey, it's my honest opinion.

In Hexen is the Firestorm for the cleric just bad? It seems like a weaker and more expensive hammer of retribution with the only mild upside being that the projectile is faster. It does barely any damage against flying targets or against slaughtaurs (which collectively make up about 2/3rds of the enemies in the game), so what is it meant to do? The only enemy I want to kill with it are chaos serpents and wendigos, but neither are particularly common and go down pretty quickly against the serpent staff. Are there some secret uses for the firestorm? Or is it just the worst green mana weapon in the game despite looking so cool?

They don't require GZDoom, and many of them look gorgeous. Some examples - Ancient Aliens and Valiant, specially the first levels of each episode before they get harder. If you can't read the sector lettering saying "DON'T", which is very hard to do at 320x240 and can be covered up by the enemy corpses in the room (and what about players who don't know English?), you have no reason to believe that you couldn't walk over and take this BFG. When you do that, you fucking explode. For having the sheer audacity to try and collect a weapon that's in a secret area. Absolute trash design.

Shadow Warrior - yes. Just keep in mind it has a very different style of gameplay from the original. You go through linear arenas like Serious Sam / Painkiller. Also its very focused on the sword and casting spells, rather than your guns.
ROTT - fuck no. The level design is boring, the gameplay is tedious & frustrating, and the attempts at humor are cringeworthy and dont match the original's sense of humor. Also its horribly optimized.

I really didn't like Dusk's look at all. The models, textures and animations look worse than damn Quake, but they also mix them up with modern effects which creates this weird visual mismatch that comes from the difference in fidelity. The sound is just a mishmash of effects of various qualities that the guy probably found on freesound.org. All of this together is running poorly optimized on Unity and due to it you have to wait half a minute until the game loads on startup among other things.
As I said, it would make for a cool Quake/Half-Life mod, but on its own I can't give it a pass. And I'm really surprised how much praise it gets, I guess standards got really low thanks to saturation of corridor shooters.

Mostly in themes, the levels and gameplay is different, but then there's some trace story elements from the original.

Boom has generalised actions for linedefs and sectors, which makes things a lot easier, and allows for more combinations of effects compared to vanilla/limit-removing. Boom also has stuff like conveyer belts and sky transfers, but I'd say unless you absolutely need them in your map, they're non-essential. Contains most wads mentioned in Cacowards, including Top 100 wads list, and a whole bunch of other wads. All playtested to be at least be playable, for every wad I've made screenshots and installed patches if those were needed.
Some old wads might still have dehacked problems, so you might want to play Compendium terawad if you'll encounter any problems.

So someone posted some virtual dog girl playing Doom 64. Since I had the Steam port from Doom Eternal, decided to try it out. My take aways:

-Controls feel a bit floaty and odd but I didn't tweak them too much and I can play so it's fine.
-There are some things that feel different, sometimes I get caught on stuff that doesn't feel like it should and you can't hide behind scenery and get shielded from fireballs.
-Holy fuck Lost Souls are ultra obnixious in this, they aren't as tanky sure but if they aren't dealt with immediately they get in your face/on your ass and don't let up.

I never played this version on the console, how accurate is it? Getting chewed up the ass by these lost souls on crack seems like the kind of thing that'd give kids nightmares.

Fishbit3r makes a port of Quake to OpenVR
It's ok but is abandoned while having some stupid bugs like continuously firing nails makes every second nail spawn out of your view instead of your gun

This guy makes a fork to fix bugs.
And then he injects particle effects that can't be reverted
Then he alters weapons so that it needs compatibility patches for any specific mod that alters them (including AD)
And then he starts shilling his mod everywhere as if the whole fork was not based off of work of another with minor touchups, but completely his own creation

I don't think the current 3D Realms has much to do with the old one, as it seems like the company name is being used for recognition more than anything. And selling glorified mod-packs for old games is pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel. Ion Maiden got more popularity from the dumb controversy, than on its own merit. Ion Fury was extremely well-received by anyone who actually cares about the kind of niche game that it invariably is in current year. I know some people have a problem with Shelly Harris as a character when comparing her to the protagonists from the holy trinity of Build games, but other than that I don't hear many complaints and people seem to about universally think it's a solid game.
>call to arms worked
It actually didn't work. 3D Realms were going to cave but when they announced they were doing so a much larger number of people came out of the woodwork asking them not to. If you pick up the latest version of the game on Steam it'll still have the gay soap and other things Resetera got upset over.

Altfire's gonna be a more defensive focused thing, the current plan is to make it fire out an energy wall that flies out a short distance and then vanishes, but it'll shove monsters back and bounce projectiles away.

What happened is that the game got review bombed after 3DR initially bent over to the progressivists. However they probably realized they'll lose more money if they keep this stance so they went back on it. Doesn't really paint a pretty picture when one flip-flops like that. They also donated 10 grand to a rather fishy sounding "lgbt youth suicide prevention" organization and said their staff will go through "mandating sensitivity training" from now on. Ultimately the likes of resetera benefited from this, but on another front.

I would actually recommend you save the best for last. Once you play Preacher.wad, no other WAD is as fun! I recommend you do pistol-starts on skill 2 with no saves. If it is still too difficult, switch to pistol starts on skill 1 - you will probably need to do this on map 9!

What makes this PWAD special to me is the gameplay - the levels are wide-open and filled with popcorn enemies so you get punished hard for moving too fast and alerting too many enemies - but at the same time, the ammo count is razor-thin so you have to keep moving or you will run out of ammo.

> I cannot believe how little fun I'm having right now.
Just don't play it anon. I grind hour-long no-death runs of other WADs and I still don't touch Plutonia. It's ugly as sin compared to modern maps, and I find the maps way too maze-like to be enjoyable. I spend like 80% of my time just wandering around trying to figure out where I'm supposed to go on some maps.
> I spent about a week trying to beat it on UV, then I gave up after reaching map03.
This is why I recommend people do no-saves pistol-start runs on skill 2 for your first playthrough. You get the challenge of doing no-saves pistol-starts, but it's not stupidly punishing because it's skill 2, so you can still fall for each trap and survive. Easy difficulty gives you a chance to learn the map so you can play it on a harder difficulty. And if it's STILL too difficult, then you can turn it down to skill 1, where you get a 50%-reduced-incoming-damage buff and all ammo pickups give you double ammo. Yes some maps are so hard that you gotta learn them on skill 1, for example Preacher map 9, or Swim with the Whales map 2, or all of Sunder!

Also, all maps are balanced for pistol starts, so doing continuous playthroughs can ruin the balance of some maps. Yes, there are exceptions, for example I would recommend you just blast through a continuous-playthrough of Adventures of Square on Ultra-Violence difficulty for your first playthrough since it's easy that way, and tons of fun. UV pistol-starts of Adventures of Square is a whole 'nother story, though, because of how difficult it is without all the good weapons. There are other exceptions, too, like I understand sometimes you just wanna chill and do a continuous playthrough for your first playthrough, in which case I recommend skill 3 instead of skill 2 since it will be easier with all the good weapons

>>6383926

>> No.6384064

>>6383920
Don't feel bad about playing it on HMP, because that's probably the best thing to do when playing it first time. Map 03 is the one where it starts hitting you with traps every room, but it's also one of the worst cases of maps where you just have to memorize and know the traps to survive. Map 04-07 will be much better. (08-10 will have some very mean moments too.)

meme rotted is what your brain is. you eat everything the mainstream news stations feed you and never think for yourself. instead you just parrot whatever shit you've heard until and after your soul has fallen out. do you seriously believe that everyone that's displeased with the way things are going are/have been manipulated bu russian superhackers?

Its from Refracted Reality, where it's a flat texture put on cyllinder column.
Without the cyllinder distortion it does not look as mesmerizing for some reason.

i can do that too

i live in sweden and during my whole lifetime i've seen sweden get destroyed under "liberal" politics. we have imported probably over a million third world savages to our preaviously peaceful country, and guess what that have brought us. terrorism, murder, gang rapes, middle school kids being mugged and pissed on on their way home from school, our whole culture is being destroyed all thanks to liberals and their anti-racism manipulating retarded boomers into letting sub-humans into our society

Here's an original texture
In Refracted Reality it is put upon a cyllinder and set to scroll diagonally, which turns into quite a mesmerizing effect.

When set to scroll the same way on a flat surface result is not nearly as satisfying to watch. I tried to make an animated walpaper out of it, but it never turned out quite right. Maybe one of you anons will manage to do it, I'll be really happy

>>6384284
When I said thge opposite it was "very pleasant to look at" as opposed to "very unpleasant to look at" of FIREBLU
