Not this shit again.
Anyway, if we go by traditional/Street Fighter-likes only, there weren't much since Capcom or SNK didn't port any of their well known series to the N64.
I'd say Killer Instinct Gold would be the best.
Rakuga Kids by Konami is actually also a good game that plays a lot like the Marvel VS Capcom games. The amount of frame animations per character on that game is also insane.
For 3D fighters, nothing that matches Virtua Fighter 2, but the SD mode in Flying Dragon is unique and pretty good.
I also like Super Robot Spirits, mostly because I'm a SRW fan. Sad that there weren't sequels to SRS.

Rakuga Kids feels too stiff to control and the normal attacks are so damn short, it's a shame because the game is a delight to look at.
I'll agree with KIG being the best N64 fighting game, though I think the MKs (Trilogy and 4) are pretty fun too.

What these guys said, Killer Instinct Gold, Rakugakids and the Fighters Destiny series. Fighters Destiny was basically a Virtua Fighter 64. MK Trilogy is iight, I know that the N64 version is known as one of the top 3 versions to have, but I think it's the controller itself that throws me off because I'm already used to the Saturn version.

It's not a traditional fighting game but it's closer to that than any other established genre so it fits. Also the N64 was garbage for fighting games so even though it's not quite one it's still the best the system had to offer.

It's tricky when there's a game like this that both doesn't neatly fit a genre bit isn't big enough to spawn it's own. If there was a genre for it, it would probably be something along the lines of a Party Fighting Game.

That's not a thing and fighting games are traditionally 1v1. It's a game for many players at a time which us a party game. It takes the influence for it's gameplay mostly from platformers and fighters so you could call it a Platform Fighting Party Game but that's kind of a mouthful a d redundant. It's a party game mostly and that's all fine.

Are you sure? Because Smash players are already in fighting tournaments, making money. How about you?
I think the desperate ones are the ones constantly wanting to let everyone know that they think Smash isn't a fighting game.
In the real world nobody cares about your partciular way to categorize games, and at the end of the day, again, Smash players are in EVO, and you aren't.
Anyway, as I said, Smash is a fighting game, but not a Street Fighter-like.
It still plays more like SF than, say, VF or Tekken, though.

I don't really consider tournaments or money, I really just look at game play. I don't have much investment either way.

It's funny because that's the bit that highlights what an elaborate strawman the whole image is and the one or two decent points it makes go right out the window.

Also it's just plain wrong, Smash is a fighting game and platformer inspired party game and there's nothing wrong with that. It's uniqueness is one of it's strengths.

This. Smash and Tekken are more similar to each other, not to Street Fighter.
I always thought of Smash as a 3D fighting game anyway. It has the percentage numbers instead of a health bar, but the ring out in Smash always made me think of Virtua Fighter.

Never thought of it that way, but I guess you're correct.
Still, Smash is way faster than 3D fighting games, that's why I think it's more similar to Street Fighter. Smash has 3D graphics but the gameplay is 2D, and the camera doesn't rotate around the characters depending on your position like it does in VF/Tekken.
