how is this so good and why did they never match it

>> No.6376948

It's better than Sonic 3, but I wouldn't say it's better than 1 and 2.
Still, the original 4 games and Sonic CD are still all classics.

Its actually fun to play; has that good balance between platforming, problem solving and fun rollercoaster sections that 1 and 2 lack

its noy, unless your are the autistic single mom child.
The only snonic game that was good was the first one, everything after that was the quivalent of a shit taking a shit.

S&K isnt better than S3. It rather feels empty and made out of left overs.

I really didn't like the first Sonic much personally. 3 acts is a little too much and just feels like wasting time running through an extra version of the same level. Lack of spin dash makes it less exciting too since you're just running and then using down to passively hit the roll. And the bosses were garbage. Final boss was just Robotnik showing up in different oversized pneumatic power cylinders like a slow paced whack-a-mole routine. And there were emeralds to chase after but no Super Sonic when you get them all. Only reward is a slightly different ending screen.

I like the 3 acts, it feels like they were able to refine established zones thoroughly. In Sonic 2, the pacing is pretty good, but it feels quantity over quality.
In Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, they did larger zones, but at the same time that drags the pacing in many occasions.
Sonic 1 feels like it has a good enough pacing while still providing fleshed out zones.
As for "passively" rolling down, I feel it's more rewarding and plays along with the pinball physics theme that Sonic was conceived with. Spindash is cool but at the end of the day is just the developers giving kids a way to be fast without having to get good first.
There is the Sonic Jam version which includes the spindash though.
Sonic 1 has a lot of memorable boss fights that were later copied/homaged in later games. The final boss is disappointing compared to the other games' bosses with the giant robots, but unlike those, Sonic 1's final boss actually keeps you on your tip toes the entire fight. You're constantly moving and trying to hit him. The other final bosses have a lot of waiting. And something about hitting Robotnik inside one of those tubes feels incredibly satisfying.
As for Super Sonic, I love the concept of SS, but nowadays I avoid getting the emeralds in the other games. Accidentally turning into SS when I don't want to and getting the music change and twitchy controls is tedious.
And that Sonic 1 ending screen is still my favorite end screens from Sonic games.

Why are all 2D Sonic games so easy? When I replay them I always end up with like 30-40 lives at the end of a playthrough. Did anyone ever manage to get to a continue screen? Who did the devs balance this for? Mentally stunted 5 year olds?

yeah me. I'm really bad at Sanic games. Some of the design choices are completely counterintuitive and some are just designed to screw you over. I guess you could do perfect runs if you know the games in and out. Btw I was kinda disappointed that the blue sphere collecting in Sonic Mania for some reason has way less responsive and less tight controls than in Sonic 3. First I thought that my controller sucked (which it does) but when I play Sonic 3 it was suddenly easy getting all the spheres.

I have bad memories about this particular game - but that has to do more with the times I used to play it, I think. All I can recall is how beautiful the backgrounds were (especially the Mushroom Hill zone), and how ominous yet fitting the music was.

this is pure nostalgia talking, final zone is a complete joke. sonic 2 and 3's final bosses are much trickier and more rewarding when you win even with the waiting in 2's when he jumps. sonic 1's is really basic projectile avoidance and nothing else.

Easy for us yes; but I watched my GF play the DS collection version of 1 and she had to use like 100 lives to beat the game while using the savestate checkpoints at the start of each level that version offers.

For her defense, the DS version is laggy as hell for some reasons but still.

Anyway - first time I played Sonic with a bro as an early teen, we couldn't get past world 2.

I'd say that Sonic are well balanced for platformers aimed at "average consumers", in fact it's probably more difficult than the SMB trilogy and definitely harder than SM World.

>There is the Sonic Jam version which includes the spindash though.

The taxman remake also gives Sonic 1 the spin dash. The android version. It can even be emulated using Bluestacks so you have no excuse not to play it.

Honestly it's the best version of the game, true widescreen, spindash if you want it for Sonic 1 (don't use it if you don't want to), Tails and Knuckles added for Sonic 1 and 2.

The games are easier however due to the widescreen, its consequences, and other things; the special stages in S2 are just twice as easy for instance; and some bosses vary quite a bit due to the widescreen. But still great versions.

oh and it also adds Super Sonic in sonic1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrtuBgPnTK4

the video uses a cheat but pretty sure the regular way to get it is to beat the game with all emeralds and you get SS as a New Game+

just don't play with touchscreen, emulate and use a pad.

This is probably the peak of Sonic games. Sonic CD is second best in terms of level design, visual aesthetic, and god-tier soundtrack for both the US and JP versions. All the classic Sonic games are fun desu

Sonic the hedgehog 3 part 2.

Too big to fit all together on a modern cart at the time. That or they thought it would be good to charge more money for two games.

Not an argument, you could be talking out of nostalgia too.
The thing is, in Sonic 1's final boss you're constantly moving, while the other 2 have waiting parts.

Dunno how you play it but I spend half my time waiting. For instance wait 5 seconds when the electric balls appear then run. Then wait for the tubes to raise.
