I recently got DOSbox setup and I'm looking for some recommendations for DOS games, I got some of the obvious ones like Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit, Tyrian, Doom and that sort, any other good recommendations you might have?

This a good site for old cracks and trainers if you need them.

I'd also recommend using MUNT32 and the CM32 ROMs for games that support the Roland MT32: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5j-_ZMS8_UoY2MxOWRmMzktZmZhOS00M2EwLWFkZGItODNmODY4ZjU5Y2Vi

along with VirtualMIDISynth and a good soundfont for games that support the Roland SC-55/General MIDI. I find this one to be pretty damn good: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1G53wKnIBMONgOVx0gCOWrBlJaXsyaKml/view

This game is good.
https://www.pixelships.com/pxs_details.html

PixelShips is a 2D shooter with randomly generated levels and missions. You create a character then select one of thousands of randomly structured campaigns, each consisting of 10 missions of increasing difficulty. The greater the campaign number, the more difficult it will be yet the more points you will score and the more likely you will find rare PixelShips.

When you destroy a PixelShip you must activate your Vacuum Device to suck in its pixels for tagging. Tag them all and the PixelShip will become yours and you can fly it! (Provided you have enough space in your reserve for it.)

There are 160 PixelShips to capture and fly. Think you've got what it takes to find them all and complete your database?

There is also a sequel but i haven't played it.

With the DOS game pack does anyone know how to change sound settings for Doom? Or is that not possible? Using an existing setup.exe only breaks the music for that.

With the 4chan pack posted above you mean? It uses MBF Doom 2.04 so it's slightly different, what do you want to change about the sound settings? You don't actually need setup.exe to change settings, use the in-game menu under options, everything should be there

The one from the mega link yeah.
Just enabling changing the soundcard to enable MIDI or Gravis Ultrasound, if I try to enable it normally then it only shows up with no sound, even showing that in the sound options, won't let me change it unless I edit it before loading the game.

Ah, i take it you're using real DOS hardware and not DosBox? (pack was designed for use with DosBox, which is simply emulated sb16 card and should work straight away).

However, i still was able to change soundcard manually using setup.exe from mbf 2.04 zip file here (i guess i deleted it because it's redundant for DosBox):

https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=40857

Just navigate to the setup.exe and you will see Allegro setup, and your MIDI and Digital cards should be visible and able to select

>> No.6378975

>>6378908

It's actually DOSbox that I'm using but with regular Doom setting SB to off and GUS to on in the config file enables the sound, but that doesn't work when I try it with this pack, I tried the setup.exe file but it wouldn't detect it with those settings, setting it back to SB in both setup and the emulator restored the sound.

>> No.6379059

>>6378975
Hmm, can confirm Gravis Ultrasound also didn't work for me even after enabling emulation in Dosbox config (doesn't show up in Allegro setup either). What works for me other than default settings: MPU-401 for MIDI and SB16 for Digital gives the best sound combination imo

>> No.6379084

>>6378975
To add to that, i think to make Gravis Ultrasound work on DosBox you need to follow some additional steps, this is copied over from the config:

Ultradir=C:\ULTRASND
Ultradir: Path to Ultrasound directory.
In this directory there should be a MIDI directory that contains the patch files for GUS playback.
Patch sets used with Timidity should work fine.

I'm guessing if you do that (and mount the correct folder), Allegro setup.exe should pick up the Gravis Ultrasound card

>> No.6379249

>>6379084

Is it any specific patch file needed specifically for MBF?
Setting this up with all these steps on the regular Doom allowed the GUS to work but doing it with the source port doesn't even detect it, even with everything mounted and in the right place.
Looking in the setup configuration file, setup.cfg, shows a patches section, selecting GUS anyway shows the error of "DIGMID patch set not found", even when I move the folder into the Doom folder itself and adjust the paths.

I've played Fallout 1 & 2 and Arcanum. What's the best "entry level" game for the older, more "you'll probably have to take notes on paper and maybe even draw a map" style of RPG? (Ideally still turn-based, though, and with a decent story)

>> No.6379271

>>6375868
Thanks for the soundfont.
I've read that Ultima Underworld requires a certain combination of... (?) or the mt32 soundtrack won't sound right. I recall it was something Roland related, maybe an add-on. I forgot. Shit, I start forgetting important things. Wtf is wrong.

>> No.6379287

>>6377147
Does MechWarrior 2 even work out of the box? I remember having to download a modified dosbox or some extender that installed a specific mw2 version IF everything was mounted correctly. Not very user-friendly.
And Star Trek works better in ScummVM.

>> No.6379307

>>6379253
I remember drawing maps, but that was way earlier than Fallout or Arcanum. Maybe try the Buck Rogers games from SSI. Not sure if I ever drew any maps in those.

>> No.6379554

>>6379271
Haven't played much of the game myself, so I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to. I know it takes advantage of the extra sounds the CM32 has, so you'll want to use a CM32 ROM if you play it (though you should just use the CM32 ROM anyway, any game that uses the extra sounds will be better off)
You just want to select MT32 under the option for Sound, and Soundblaster Pro under the option for Speech.

After trying the ULTRASND prepackaged folder for DosBox that's floating around the net and mounting it, starting up SETUP and still not seeing any Gravis availability, i came to the conclusion that it must be because (for some reason) Doom MBF port only supports 'Gravis Ultrasound PnP' and not the Ultrasound Classic (which doom vanilla supports).
Ultrasound PnP was a different soundcard that came out 3 years later, and probably DosBox only emulates the Classic one from 1992.

Anyone here playing on an actual PC from the 90s with MS DOS installed? What parts are you using?

I'm thinking of building one and I'm looking for some ideas on what parts to use. Mostly wanna be able to play doom 1 & 2 and wolfenstein 3d smoothly.

Did a bit of research earlier and heres as far as I got:
-MS DOS version 6.22
-for the cpu, intel or amd dx4 486 or an intel Pentium, either one running at 100MHz
-soundblaster 16
-probably 32MB of RAM
-2gb hard drive of some kind

No ideas yet on a specific keyboard, mouse, or CRT monitor yet but I'm hoping it'll feel like something built in the early/mid 90s once it's all done

If you intend to use a 486 processor you will need to find a contemporary motherboard with proper socket (or maybe you can find a complete build) when you find an old mobo like that you will also be limited to using ps/2 mouse and keyboard and they are harder to find nowadays

later dos games can be a bit slow on a 486, a pentium 133+ should cover everything
>soundblaster 16
consider getting an adlib as well
>2gb hard drive of some kind
you can make a 2GB partition on a larger hdd if needed

also consider a network card if you want an easy way to transfer stuff to/from it

I'm sure there are many. I have 3, which is pretty much the bare minimum required unless you want to swap parts and tweak all kinds of shit every time you want to run something a few years before older or younger than the last thing.
A 486 or P-100 will be useless for running late 90's stuff. There's no solution to what you want to do. Even with multiple setups picking all the right parts is complicated. So complicated that there are forums full of autisits who have been discussing this 24/7 for years. That's where you should be looking. And looking, not asking. You need a much better understanding of the situation before you can even begin to ask the right questions.

Go for a Pentium 1 imho. The 486 66 struggles with Wing Commander 2 and Strike Commander. With a Pentium you have some overhead for later DOS titles.

Ideally you need 2.
For stuff before 94-95 - 486dx
For 96-99 games - P2 400 MHz with Voodoo 3, 512 MB Ram.
