That's definitely one, I'd put anything Osamu Sato has made, specifically LSD. I'd also say Artdink's games, they're like early Maxis Sim games but more aesthetic.

The problem with setting out to make "art" in the form of a video game is that a "game" is a medium that in itself has a low-brow connotation so the people trying to make "high-brow games" are struggling against their media from the beginning.

It took a hundred years before comics started being capable of telling fully mature and unique stories. It could be that when it comes to things that began as children's culture, literally everyone who grew up in a time without them has to be dead.

Sato had an interesting direction there with Roly-Polys that perhaps the best way to take a step in that direction of making art that is also legitimately a game is to make the game directed at small children since it's easier to amuse them.

In the other hand, Kenji Eno just went ahead and embraced conventional gameplay in D2 and I think it's an all time great but he stopped making games after that. Was he unsatisfied with the artistic value of that final game or was there just something about the millennium that truly delineated the media? Sato also stopped making games at that same time.

I think Artdink is the only company in the retro period that truly tried to make art games fun but there are a lot of games that will be seen as art in hindsight and we're approaching a point of having enough hindsight to be able to identify them. Like how the majority of people say that "Generation 2 have are unplayable" now is the point where we can actually see them objectively enough to identify what elements truly rise to the level of "art"

The surreal must evoke the real or it is a failure. LSD Dream Emulator is based directly on the actual dream journal a female studio employee kept during the late 80s. It was also more directly converted into an art book Lovely Sweet Dream in which you can read the actual journal entries largely transnational to English.

The aesthetic, art direction/execution, challenge, world-building, soundtrack and overall experience. There's a deep sensitivity and love poured into the game, that I think anyone who's a fan of it can't help but notice and appreciate as they go through it.

It's a joke, there's no profundity in video games. What kind of fuckjob would describe a Donkey Kong or Mario game as profound in any way?
Even modern games with hours of dialogue and exposition hardly scratch the surface of a meaningful experience.

There's no such thing as "high art" in videogames. Those two completely seperate entities have never touched. Hipsters have never created anything of objective value.
